Made an account a couple of years back and dipped my toes in the refuge. Jumping back into this thing, trying to figure it out. I’ve never “forumed” before, so just holler at me if I’m doing this wrong. Feeling like a real Luddite. Live in South Austin, play all the public courses in the area. On the membership waitlist at Grey Rock. Just joined The Nest today. Of my buddies, I’m the most serious golfer (serious as an indicator of interest, not temperament). With everyone in my regular group starting families and going hard at work, it’s tough to get the group together. After some interesting & lengthy experiences playing as a single getting paired with randoms, I’m hoping to meet some folks who have some ability either on the course or at the bar. I’ve listened to the podcast for years so I figure this is the place to start. Excited to give this a whirl and thankful it exsist.
cool man! we have a fun thread here as well as a LIVELY group chat on whatsapp. if you want baptized by fire, Hop in. @RMcCall, are you the man with the links?
California guy sneaking in here looking for a recommendation. My bachelor party is in Austin at the end of May. We’re looking to play a round Friday morning (20th). Only a few actual players in the group, but I think there will be 7-8 total guys. I’ll hear bar and dinner recs also. @Slim
Go for a fun round on one of the city courses. Morning might not be ideal for BYOB at Butler, but Lions is a great time and cheap and a good piece of history (plus more trees for shade than Mo Willie or the Clay/Kizer courses). I’ll leave bar and dinner recs to the folks who still live there, but will just say that Stiles Switch is the most overlooked barbecue in town and you get the added bonus of the fact that they filmed some scenes from Dazed and Confused in that shopping center for some local history.
The Quarry could also be a good option for a “nicer” round in a very cool/different setting. Front nine is links-y and wide open, back nine plays in circles down and back up a quarry.
I’ve got a couple of pretty high handicaps playing, is the quarry going to have a lot of lost balls? It is in a more central location to our air bnb but I’d prefer everyone have a good time and get around at good pace.
I’d play the Quarry over La Cantera. Lost balls aren’t a big issue on either, but quarry is more interesting and slightly more playable. Hopefully Brack is in decent shape in June. The greens need to recover a bit right now.
Morning guys, posted here a while back about myself and a buddy coming down to Austin to play some golf, and our trip is quickly approaching. Thanks to all who had course/entertainment recommendations! From the looks of it, pretty much every course utilizes online booking, and you can only book a tee time seven days in advance. Just wondering if any of you have any tips/tricks for booking outside the one week window other than just calling pro shops and begging for mercy.
