Roll Call: Austin/San Antonio

With that itinerary here’s my 4:

Grey Rock can be on your way, is a solid intro into hill country golf and has a little quirk. Wouldn’t need driver a ton and ease into your trip.

Falconhead is on your way, gonna be a long round, gonna be a punch in the gut if you don’t know where to miss, but is a good prep for HB.

Kissing tree is in the best shape typically. Can’t speak to it, but is known for being great.

I’m partial to Star Ranch because I live next to it. It’s the easiest course of them. 14 drivers and wedges, but it puts you on the opposite side of town than HB.

yep, I thought you were coming in before DST. After DST, you’ll finish no problem.

Thanks to those of you who offered ideas. I think I’m gonna put Kissing Tree as choice 1. I’ll probably put Grey Rock as choice 2 if for some reason Kissing tree falls through and Falconhead as the backup if both were to not work for some reason. Star Ranch seems a little out of the way if we are staying in South Lamar.

Now I need ideas/help for places to eat and nightlife spots in or close to south Lamar. We will only have that 1 evening before we head out the next morning for horseshoe bay. Maybe throw in a great breakfast spot in that area as well with your recs. Thanks in advance again for any and all ideas.

We have rounds lined up at Apple Rock, Ram Rock, and Summit Rock (we have a connection thankfully) at Horseshoe Bay. Slick Rock is closed the week we are there for aeration so no million dollar waterfall hole for us I guess.

If I can piggy back off of @NebIrish’s questions - what areas of the city should be avoided in terms of accommodations? Looking at flying in for a week in April. Going with my girlfriend so I’d imagine we’ll mostly be looking to do your normal tourist type shit, although we may try to squeeze one round in.

Loro is great for dinner and Phoebe’s Diner for breakfast unless you want to get tacos, which Veracruz is a great option. If you want BBQ, always suggest Terry Black’s as it’s really good and you really won’t wait in line too long versus some of the more famous places. Love their Beef Ribs.

Change of plans for us. Staying down by San Marcos now after we play Kissing Tree. Anyone know of any good food/nightlife/breakfast options down there for us? Thanks in advance for any help.

Go eat at the Grist Mill and stop by Greuhne (pronounced Green) Dance Hall if they have any live music.

For nightlife options I can guarantee you that if you’re over 21 and you go out at The Square down the hill from campus and just people watch that you will have the best, most terrible time of your life. You could also just go to Sean Patrick’s for a good pint in a classic American Irish Pub.

For food, I imagine everything that was there when I was an undergrad 10 years ago is closed, but if Gil’s Broiler is still standing go there and get the biggest burger they’ll let you order and a Manske Roll—LBJ used to have those flown to the White House for him. I don’t know if Dos Gatos kolaches for breakfast is good or not, but I do know that I ate there almost every morning for two years and never got tired of it. For a real dinner, Palmer’s is great and was way too expensive for me as an undergrad but I can’t wait to go back now that I pay taxes.

If the weather is good, sitting on the deck at River Pub is a good time, and it’s down the way from Herbert’s taco hut which literally has to still be there because I have a friend with a table he sits at every Sunday. I think the Saltgrass Steakhouse next to aquarena springs is a Kerbey Lane now, so you can get a little slice of Austin if you want for breakfast one day. Grins is a solid casual American joint for dinner, too.

That’s all I got. If the St Pita’s food truck is still parked over there you could check that out, too, but I would be astonished if it was still around.

Edit: every taco place in San Marcos is good but whatever the one a block from Railyard Bar is called is the best

Herbert’s Taco Hut is amazing for what it is.

Thanks. I’m 43 so I’m not sure if I can hang with the young crowd but I sure as hell like to try sometimes. Thanks for the San Marcos food and fun recs.

It was 70 degrees up here in Neb today and I had the day off and a round set up with a good buddy only to wake up to my 4 year old puking with the flu. So much for enjoying an early season round up north :man_facepalming:t2:. It’ll be back in the 30s next week .

I did sneak out to hit my 56 degree wedge at a bucket 50 yds out in the empty lot beside my lawn while the little one was napping this afternoon however so all was not lost I guess. :man_shrugging:t2:

Excited to be down to experience Kissing Tree and Horseshoe Bay in 2 weeks!

Flying out tomorrow morning. Excited to come down and enjoy the Lone Star State. Playing Kissing Tree tomorrow, Apple Rock Wednesday, Ram Rock Thursday, and Summit Rock Friday.

Anyone play any of those courses recently? How’s the conditioning looking? Any advice on any holes/courses?

Anyways if any of u ever come up to Nebraska I’d love to help u out with any questions u may have.

I’m going to be in Austin this weekend for a month (I’lol be there until April 16). If anyone wants to get out for a weekday afternoon round, let me know. I’m free pretty much every day after 2pm hoping to get out early next week, Monday or Tuesday, if weather cooperates

Morning, going to be in Austin for the next 4 weeks for work and asking for your best food recommendations in the downtown area. I’ll be staying at the Hotel Proper and the W down near the river so things that are walking distance from there get moved to the front of the line. If there are must eats that require an Uber please share those as well.

I’ve gotten some recs from Twitter and going to listen to TrapDraw episode, but as long as I’m gonna be there the more options I have the better.

Thanks y’all!

Depends on your definition of downtown, but if we’re being very strict:

Wu Chow is pretty good, there’s a Capital Grille if you’re feeling fancy, Peche is pretty good for drinks and food, Gus’s Fried Chicken is pretty good, and I like Walton’s Fancy and Staple for breakfast/brunch. Polvo’s is not terribly authentic, but the entomatadas are just like mama used to make them.

If we’re including past Lamar and south of the river, Clarke’s is really good for seafood, Chuy’s if you want to feel like a very bored local, and Casa de Luz for vegetarian/vegan food and also for feeling like maybe you’ve accidentally joined a cult.

I’d classify a downtown area as somewhere I can get in an Uber in less than 10 minutes with size of Austin, but we could likely have a very extensive conversation on that.

Thanks for the recs!

A cult in Austin? You don’t sayS :joy:

Thanks! Going to add all these to the list that aren’t on there.

Should be a good time. Haven’t been in years so looking forward to checking out the food scene in the evenings after work.

Complete shot in the dark here. I’m playing in the PGA Professional Championship at Barton Creek from April 17-20 (yes the first rd is on Easter Sunday, I know). Caddies are required and mine fell through. Would anyone be interested in looping? You don’t need to be Bones or Joe Lacava, but if you did have any local knowledge that would be cool. Cut after 36, could be a two day gig, could be 4. $100 a rd plus a percentage for made cut. Message me if interested!

Good morning, I caddie in the area and I know a bunch of the caddies around here. I’ll be there already with a guy, but can definitely ask around to see if anyone else would be up for it.
