I just think it is a better designed course overall. Lions has too many goofy holes. Certainly fun to play, and it has the history behind it, but I find Mo Willy to be a better course. Side note, and this is always subject to change, the conditioning at Mo Willy right now is really, really good.
so a contrarian AND a front-runner. Good to know.
This is like seeing who’s better between the Detroit Lions and Jacksonville Jags.
well, he is an Indiana fan, so he’s used to that relative level of achievement anyway.
I agree. Muny is obnoxious at times, and also the soil is so thin there you are almost certain to ding up your irons or catch a root or something. If your irons are squirrely Muny is a big pile of no fun. Mo Willy is awesome when the greens are in good shape, not really any holes I outright hate whereas I can find plenty at Muny that I would be happy to never see again (1, 2, and 6 off the top of my head).
The Lions hate is surprising. When I lived in Austin it was my favorite city course to play. I’ll admit that hole number 1 is…. odd, and I don’t love 13, but I generally enjoy the rest of the course quite a bit.
That’s an interesting comparison - least favorite holes at Lions versus MW. I agree that #1 Lions is #1 on the stupid list, and I agree about the turf, or lack thereof. It just seems like a bunch of short dogleg par 4s where you have to hit the fairway and you better not go over the green. #15 and #18 are pretty much nothing holes, though they are nice for improving your score (or holding it together) at the end of a round.
I play Morris Williams probably more than any other course and I can’t really come up with any holes that I hate. #3 probably comes the closest, but that’s a me problem. 7 and 16 are tough if you aren’t a long hitter, but there is nothing quirky about them, except the ditch running through the 16th green.
My biggest problems with MW are the periodic failures of the greens and walking all the hills in the summer heat. Oh, and the afternoon sun in your eyes on the driving range. But it’s still more useful than the Lions range.
*whispers* it’s 9-1 from me. Muny’s great for the history and the quirks, but if i want to actually play a round and not just an afternoon 9 with some friends, Muny is hardly ever on the list
Sir. The “ditch” on 16 green is a goddamn Biarritz. Architecture nerd hat off. I agree with all of your takes.
Well, thank you for calling me sir, to start with. I will be charitable and pretend that wasn’t a reference to my advanced age.
I had wondered about calling that green a Biarritz, but didn’t feel confident enough in my limited knowledge. When I looked it up, I saw a lot of references to long par 3s and very long, narrow greens.
Muny is terrible. It really is. My Austin Municipal Power Rankings:
- Roy Kizer
- Morris Williams
- Jimmy Clay
4a) Hancock Park……such promise…… - Lions
Grey Rock will never be a municipal course in my eyes……ever.
It was definitely not an age reference because i am old as fuck (right @Jdonelson ?). And it is probably not a traditional Biarritz, but im riding with that.
What would your split be between Riverside and Lions? Question is for anyone
Thats a tough call. Lots of variability in conditions, but putting that aside, maybe 5-5?
Honestly, I’ve WAY soured on Kizer over the years. Especially tipped out, Clay and MoWilly are better tracks.
Kizer minus 17 and the green on 16 is so fun….an easy walk….completely different than everything else in the city……i’m a huge fan.
it’s waaaay more ‘linksy’ so I think that’s what I love it. if it could ever be firm and fast……an effing playground it would become.
no trees gives it a low-rent Trinity Forest feel.
if I had to put GreyRock somewhere….it’s probably up front BUT no.
Agree on all of this, for sure.
Hole 1 at Jimmy Clay can burn in hell
Alongside #3?
1,3, and 8 are brutal. Big scores always lurking out there.
