Roll Call: Alberta

Just giving this an off-season bump.

Throw you name in the list if you’re keen, curious, for sure in. I’ve started to reach out to sagebrush in particular as that seems to be the pinnacle of the trip here, and will begin gathering some info for surrounding area courses shortly.

The closer we are to our actual numbers the fewer surprises and disappointments there may be on the planning end.

Okay folks, as reward for surviving the current temperatures here in Edmonton Sagebrush has provided a response!

All the details of the quote are here on that feeler sheet. Please add your name if you’re intersted, then I can stalk you properly for money.

Short of it is they have room for us Fri July 19th, and Saturday July 20th.

The quote was for unlimited golf for two days, two nights accommodations on site, and included breakfasts to go with it. Total per person costs on site are $1,149 all in.

They offered some offsite options for staying in Merritt at the best western which is 20 minutes away. This would reduce the costs by $283/pp to a total of $867 per golfer.

There’s a deposit due on booking of roughly 10% to sagebrush for golf ($840) or golf and accommodations ($1440).

I’m inquiring with the course about what the details of the lodging looks like for beds, rooms, and so on.

For those of us that would like a bit more golf, I’ll probably look to add some thurs/sunday golf still.

edited to revise the dates

Oh you ALL the way out there. I can safely say I’ve never played golf that far north here, although I moose hunt on the FTR every fall. And usually drive to GP at least once for Argo parts…

Welcome to the party!

Hey dude, welcome. There are a few of us up (down?) in Edmonton if you ever find yourself here, and I’m always looking for an excuse to get to barrhead if you find yourself wanting to play there.

North of Wolf Creek is such a blind spot for me for golf. Never heard of Barrhead, but I see its western Canada’s favourite volume shooter, Les Furber. Obviously you like it?

I haven’t been in many years but it’s a fun track. Wildly good rates, and enough intrigue to make the trip worthwhile. Coal creek’s stolen all my local drive for golf interest though of late.

Hello friends up north. Hope you are all well. Currently searching for a buddy’s trip for 2024 and it seems via our poll that we may end up in Calgary and onto Edmonton for a CFL game. Is Banff worth the price of admission? If we are searching for two 36 days south and then something on the way to Edmonton what would people suggest. I saw Radium Springs looks nice. We are usually willing to take the hike and could even stay out that way. Thanks for any advice in advance! Bunch of average golfers looking for deals too. Cheers to warmer weather and more sun.

Oh man, so much to say for this!

I’d say yes, if you’re traveling in, Banff is 100% worth it. One of Canada’s greats (despite the routing fuckery, but we can discuss that once you play…).

A second round that day? Canmore Golf & Curling would be my choice. Best value in the rockies, and a charming old parkland course in the river valley. I’d take it over Stewart Creek for value by a mile, and I like it way more than the (for me) gimmicky Silvertip.

Other option is Kananaskis - I’d go out of my way to play Kidd, but find Lorette way less interesting.

From there, if you want to go the long way to Edmonton - and the drive is 10/10 worth it up the Icefields Parkway, go and play Jasper. Hell, play it twice. Banff’s lesser known, but even better, sister course. Then it’s a straight shot east in to Edmonton.

From there, Edm is a massive blind spot for me, although our pals rave about Coal Creek east of the city as a great public option. If you have an opportunity for a pro to call private courses to gain guest access, Blackhawk is the one to shoot for.

If you want to push further in to the mountains before going north, Greywolf in Invermere is probably the pick out there. Haven’t played Radium in years, but all the options out there are decent enough. I’d just take Jasper 10/10 times, and it gets you closer to your CFL game.

Hope this is a decent enough start - can also recommend Calgary options when you fly in if you want, or courses on the highway too. But driving through the mountains is a way better idea. Let us know what we can expand on!

Wow! What a delivery. Cannot give appreciation enough. Plans are just in the works this weekend as we nail down final numbers but I am hopeful to get up there a few days early to explore too. Really appreciate it. Cheers

Only thing of note… kananaskis books open and fill crazy quick - it’s a great 36 hole day in one spot, nice accommodations on site too. But you have to be on point when they open up the tee sheet for the season. Might have some luck reaching out noting you’re a group traveling in?

But yeah - any other questions from your research, fire away. Happy to do food and booze recs along the way too. Calgary is a nice, if rugged, little city - great restaurant scene here. Good luck planning and let us know if there’s any other questions!

Very cool, not many make this a destination but there’s good golf to be had for sure. Where are you coming from? As fun as all the courses around the province are, it’s a huge place, and you’ll spend a ton of time driving if you try and get everywhere.

@duncmitchell gave lots of good advice, the mountains are very cool, and worth a visit for tourist reasons, the icefield parkway is about as spectacular a drive as you’ll find too, hyper western Canada stuff.

For golf in the province, Kananaskis is spectacular, and the golf is very good.

Greywolf is another absolute beauty (it’s BC’s but close enough):

Wolfcreek has unbelievable rates and offers two full 18’s to play. It’s worth consideration if you want something to do between CGY and YEG. The courses are both very good, if a little old school:

The mickelson course west of calgary (AKA Liv North) was fun, a little pricey for what it is but it’s a cool track if you ignore the price a bit:

they have a yuge putting green for a putting course/warmup too

As alluded to Coal Creek is a must play up here, I’m biased but for what it is, the course is fun, hard, unique, always in fantastic shape, the rates are criminally good, and the greens are excellent.

I’ve not played blackhawk despite having an in there but the locals on here that have, haven’t stopped gushing about how good it is. I’d put that right up there if you can only hit one spot in Edmonton.

Beyond that there are a few of us here, and I always love to join or meet with other refuge members for a round so hit me up if you’re looking for that.

Thank you for this too! Pictures look absolutely awesome. We are actually from all over (NC, Nola, Memphis, Austin, Cali, ATL etc.) and looked up that way since we have a buddy playing OL for the Stampeders and via some YouTube searches saw some beautiful sights. Thought I’d come check with some reliable minds. Thank you for all the info my friends.

Damn @Banjopete quite the photographer there.

I can’t really add much more than what @duncmitchell @Banjopete have already said.

Unique and great value: Coal Creek, Wolf Creek (Old and Links), Kananaskis (both are great IMO), Canmore.

Oh maybe one i’ll add for unique is Dinosaur Trails out in Drumheller. It’s a bit out of the way, and the golf is… challenging. But it’s definitely unique golfing around the hoodoos, maybe finding a dino fossil… maybe!

As someone who worked at Kananaskis as an Assistant pro, I’m just gonna say that Kidd is only rated higher than Lorette because of a couple elevated tee shots that give you some good views. Lorette is a better golf course. 14-18 is a really good stretch of golf. Way more variety and shot value on Lorette, and you still get some insane views.

Listen, no doubt you’ve played them a boatload more than me, but when I was there this summer I found the middle of Lorette way too boring (or maybe same-same?) to rate it anywhere near Kidd.

I hit 5w wedge on 3/4 holes in the middle of that round and it totally killed the excitement for me. I swear 3 holes were exactly the same!

It had been a while since I had been out (spent a few years away from AB) but if they charged $50 more for Kidd and $50 less for Lorette I wouldn’t argue.

Is 16 the elevated par 3 on Kidd? Because that does kinda stink. Probably the weakest hole I remember out there…

I mean it depends how you play it too, if you have a hot day with driver or what not off the tee I can see how it would not appeal in that respect. Agree with you there. 16 is the elevated par 3, plays right into the cock of the prevailing wind. Hated that hole
