Boss will be out of town on Friday and I’m thinking of playing hooky for the afternoon once my 11am meeting is done - so 12:30 /1pm tee time. Possibly somewhere further out than usual; Galen Hall, Iron Valley, maybe somewhere in Delaware or Maryland? Anyone else up for joining?
I sure do love Iron Valley in Autumn - wish I could join you
Weather looks gorgeous for tomorrow you end up booking anywhere?
Hey all, visiting from the Bay Area next week. I’m playing in Ardmore on Thursday, but looking for a place to play on Wednesday. Was going to play Jeffersonville, but looks like they’re aerating on Tuesday. Any recommendations on where to go? Was recommended Glen Mills - is that worth the drive from the University City area?
I think Glen Mills is really good and in my opinion underrated. Would be worth the drive if you can’t get on anywhere else.
I nabbed a solo spot with 3 randoms at Galen Hall. Super excited, haven’t been back there since pre-covid. Bringing my persimmon and blades, we’ll see if the randoms give me any crap for it
@ayc25 Glen Mills is a solid choice except for 1 or 2 holes. However, they’re simply charging too much these days. Paxon Hollow is always fun, Turtle Creek if you want a lazy farmland course, and Makefield Highlands is always good too.
That’ll play, good luck sir!
Some potential good values supporting a good cause if anyone is interested.

My friend’s wife is looking to buy him a birthday gift and I suggested a concert at a cool venue he hasn’t been to yet (moved to Philly two years ago). Are there any great venues you all would suggest? His tastes are wide ranging (we’ve gone from 15 person dive bar punk shows to massive warehouse raves to theaters bigger national tours). Any help would be appreciated, thanks
@MrChickPhilA and @ChickPhilA
tagging them cause I know they go to a ton of shows
Union Transfer is my favorite venue in the city, and they have a very diverse array of bands play there. TLA is a classic that isn’t what it used to be, but still plays the hits, as does Franklin Music Hall (formerly the Electric Factory). The Fillmore and The Met are newer, but have solid sound setups at both.
Really when it comes to venues, the rule of thumb is anything but Tower Theater.
@ztlumak +1 for Union Transfer - it kicks so much ass.
The two others that I would mention are the Foundry (smaller room upstairs from the Fillmore) and Brooklyn Bowl (also newer, but cool spot where you can reserve a bowling lane for the duration of the show which I wouldn’t do normally but might consider if I had a gift card).
Not the best venue in the city (although I’ve played there a bunch and they treat bands really well) but there’s a Quicksand reunion next Friday night at Underground Arts. I’ll be there, jussayin…
Thanks for the help everybody, I’ll pass it along
+2 for Union transfer.
Also I love the filmore and the met.
I first saw Quicksand in 1990 when Gorilla Biscuits was still together and before Walter was even playing guitar in the band. I’m all about golf chats that are adjacent to my musical interests.
In addition to UT, I would add scanning r5productions.com for bands he’s into. Any of the venues they book are great, including one of the best punk venues in the country, the First Unitarian Church.
This tread reminded me to pour one out for the Troc. RIP
Union Transfer is definitely the best of many worlds in one. Also used to live like a 6 block walk away. Man do I miss that. Never minded going out to Ardmore Music Hall when someone I liked was out there. Underground Arts, good times. Saw the English Beat there with my mom. Never know what’s going to come through there. Seconding RIP the Troc. Milkboy’s a good spot to fill the gaps in between more organized shows. Then of course the Fillmore for your bigger stuff and seconding or maybe thirding the foundry upstairs.
Kinda don’t hate the tower but getting there is a bit of a pain.
RIP the Troc… and the hearing in my left ear that I lost at the Troc
