Looking like my Summer '20 trip will now be a Sept '22 trip. Super excited.

Listen, for sure definitely, maybe.

Yes

Yeah, same here. I wasn’t on this site yet but I was planning my Scotland trip for May 2020, so we are in the same boat. Originally postponed to September of this year and thought that was a safe assumption… hah.

Just to pour water on your 2022 fire, it’s a lot trickier than the last two years because of a) the Open at TOC and b) three years worth of mad golfers desperate to make the trip.

The Open means a bunch of restrictions, including, in all likelihood, the use of mats on parts of the fairway to protect it.

As for the crowds of people falling over themselves to play it, well it is what it is. Over in the U.K. we’re all making hay this year when no ones there and not going near the place for two years.

So, that being said, do you think a trip to East Lothian would be a reasonable strategy instead of St. Andrews? Maybe wait for a second trip to go there? Or is everywhere going to be crazy?

Fair point - although for myself, having never been to Scotland, there are many courses that I want to play other than the Old Course, so if I am able to make the trip in 2022 and have to “settle” for the likes of North Berwick, Cruden Bay, Nairn, Dornoch, etc… I will be a happy camper.

That said - when do restrictions usually kick in during an Open year?

My dream is the Isles at this point… really seriously feel like a lot of folks should be perusing options in Northern Ireland and the aisles of Scotland. Or not…

I am heading to Ireland in 18 days and I know the UK is a different situation but I feel confident we are still on track for April 22. This trip may either reinforce that or destroy that confidence. I am transiting Heathrow as well so I will report back after.

Super curious about the cost structure of you itinerary flight if you’re willing to share… those UK fees and taxes seem brutal.

I plan on Paris and channel… leaving either Edinburgh or Ireland when the time comes.

You are correct the UK fees are much higher but sometimes it is worth it the pay the piper and have the best itinerary. Sure if you have a more flexible schedule and more time you can save some money, but also figure in the cost of the Eurostar and Flying Scotsman and I would bet you aren’t saving any money. I am pretty well experienced in travel and are more than happy to help anyone with an Itinerary whether it be for NLU Scotland or otherwise, just drop a DM.

I don’t know. At TOC they go onto mats from November to April every year to protect it, so it’s possible / probable they just extend that out to July.

Everywhere will be super busy next year, but it’s just TOC that has the mats issue. But, we tend to just go to St Andrews, grab a links ticket and just ballot into the Old. That’ll be harder as there will be so many people there. Which is why we’ll avoid it for next summer (I’m actually going in March fit a 2 year postponed friends birthday trip!)

As for the rest of the country it’ll be no different to any other normal year. Just book early as their tee sheets will fill early.

Ireland will be the same. Book now.

I’m headed to Ireland in 5 weeks time (barring the world shutting down again)… that was my fallback itinerary since my original flight to Edinburgh was connecting in Dublin, so I just made alternate arrangements in the case that the UK didn’t open up a travel corridor for the vaccinated, which they haven’t.

Fingers crossed for 2022 in Scotland; I had a lot on that itinerary I wanted to see and do.

Guis not to yuck anyone’s yum but this thread was intended for the NLU trip, there is a separate general Scotland thread here:
