NLU Pod - 1991 Ryder Cup Deep Dive

Couldn’t help myself and downloaded Episodes 162 and 163 to go through the oral history again. I can’t imagine how much work went into this one alone but really hope @Soly ends up with a deep dive into others as well.

If I know anything about Corey Pavin it’s that he’s a ‘patriot’ and definitely has a hard-on for the military. Remember when he was Ryder Cup captain who he had motivate the team?

Went back and listened to both of them and the stand out point was Monty talking about his buddy Prince Andrew having to restrain a drunk fan who was shouting at him. Tough scene all around

Great pod @solly. As a European, I’d always thought of Seve as an absolute hero but having listened to this, the previous Zinger pods and also being given Seve’s autobiography for Christmas it flipped my view. His book’s awful and he comes across as an absolute tool throughout most of it!

Would’ve been interesting to see him in today’s game and see the media’s view of him in comparison to someone like PReed in terms of ‘gamesmanship’.

This was an outstanding pod, really an enjoyable listen wire to wire. I’ll cop to knowing almost nothing about the 91 Ryder Cup prior to this and now I think I’ll have to read a few of the books about it. Got strong “if Hardcore History had an episode about golf,” from this one. All that was missing was @Soly saying “quote…unquote” all the time. Bravo!

Can’t even fathom the extent to which a proud Monty gorged himself with candy bars after his singles match “comeback”

I believe he prefers custard

I need to do more research into the Faldo shoe/spike deal.

Has there been discussion of Seve’s little fan? A six year old runs out on the green at the end of his matches multiple times.

Listened to this while I shot my lowest round of the year so far. Jacked to the tits, let’s go!

Geronimo’s dad?

Decided to listen to this again because I was working while I listened to it the first time. Gallacher comes across as an even worse loser the second time through. Complaining about the president of the United States hoping for the US to win, saying Steve Pate wasn’t hurt that bad, complaining about getting booed. It makes for good drama though

The best part of it is, he published it in a book! It wasn’t like it was emotional backlash shortly after the loss.

I swear to you, I had to rewrite most of the episode after reading that book. It was just full of some of the most outrageous and unchecked claims I’ve ever heard in golf. It was like it was never meant to be read outside of the UK.

Watching this and then watching the Ocean Course Tourist Sauce video, it’s crazy to see how much the course has grown in and matured.

“The sphincter factor was high” is too good

After hearing all the quotes it’s starting to sound like Gallacher is the pompous asshole that everyone thinks Monty is

I really feel Zinger got cast in a negative light because the situation he found himself in with Seve in the first matches. Not really fair to him.

I have said this before but those 2 are by far my favorite. That’s what got me listening to the Podcasts ritually.

I re-listen every year. They are so good. (I am also a Ryder cup Addict…)

What blows my mind,

Ray Floyd is 78. I know 1991 was 30 years ago but he was 49 when he played in that.

Could you imagine a 49 year old playing on a Ryder Cup team today?

EDIT: I forgot Phil was 48 in 2018. But wow.
