NLU Pod - 1991 Ryder Cup Deep Dive

@Soly really nice job. The amount of work you put in really shined through. I didn’t know I needed to learn that much about the 91 Ryder Cup but I am sure glad to have had the opportunity.

Pressure, man… it can make a diamond, or make you cheat.

As others have said, truly awesome work.

I don’t know what the pod got me more excited for, the Ryder Cup or next month’s PGA! Hoping the wind blows!

Great work, @Soly

Pavin comes across as an early-90s Patrick Reed.

Not finished yet, but early thoughts:

  1. Agree with the previous comments about the European’s (especially the captains) coming across as sore losers. Gallagher’s quotes might as well be Torrance after Brookline. This is particularly true in relation to the comments about the crowd. I am glad that Soly always pushes back against that narrative.

  2. Feherty’s wife caused the car accident! Great nugget that I never knew.

  3. I really missed out on Seve. I never saw him in his prime and it seems like he was a menace in every possible way.

  4. Azinger is better at telling stories than he is in the booth.

About 30% through, and it’s leading me to re-read The War by the Shore on my upcoming flights.

Does anyone else think of Chris Farley doing Schwarzkopf when they hear war on the shore?

Just me?

My main question after listening to the podcast is whether or not the word incomparable is pronounced in-COMP-ra-ble or in-COM-PARE-a-ble?

Soly interviewed him on episode 404 of the pod and it’s great.

Oh man. I’ll have to go find that one. Thanks for the heads up!

This has to be one of the best NLU pods. Congrats @Soly for the outstanding work. Please more content like this in the future.

Echoing what everyone else has already said, but really enjoyed that and would love more of the solo storytelling style in the future.

One minor nitpick, I found myself rewinding a few times to figure out what session we were now talking about and what the score was (granted I was doing other things well listening). The pause and musical interlude to set the stage for Sunday singles made it easy to know where were.

Just wanted to add my thanks for creating this - what a great story.

Now do Medinah

God, Calc. Brutal.

I always viewed him as DJ before DJ, a DGAF simpleton.

Super educational stuff, can’t even imagine how that felt and props to him for talking openly about it.

Actual lol at the euros hitting the bar during the event. Straight up sales guy at the member guest behavior.

Also, I loved the idea of Langer asking rookie Montgomerie if the yardage was from the front or the back of the sprinkler head and then being annoyed he didn’t know which. It made me think of Johnny Miller at his peak wanting a number to the half-yard. At least that’s a foot-and-a-half, not nine inches for a sprinkler head.

Can someone explain to me how Corey Pavin wearing a military fatigue hat was even remotely offensive? Was born after the Gulf War so I don’t really get it.

I think the Euros were a bit perturbed by the whole “war” narrative as it was, so going camo (still couldn’t disguise the mullet, though) was considered especially over the top.

Most people in the world don’t get hard-ons for the military and war like Americans do.

I took it more from their comments as we had troops their too. They took it as America saying they were the only ones who had fought the Gulf War and it was disrespectful to ignore that European countries had troops their too, specifically sacrifices made by those troops. The comments about this not being war etc. seemed more of them trying to set themselves on the moral high ground.
