Really, really f@cking good. Never beat her in my life.

She won D3 individuals last year. But her boyfriend is scratch, and he usually beats her by a stroke or two (they’re both playing tipped out courses around 7000).

She’s pretty sick. Ball just goes where she desires.

@NotGreat Good on you for tackling this, it will take some time, but will be extremely rewarding once you start making progress. (sounds like you already have)
Not much to add, some good suggestions here. I just wanted to say I personally would love if you kept us updated from time to time here. My wife is about to set foot on the same journey. She held a non mini golf club for the first time last fall, and started by asking which hand goes on the bottom. Her confidence took a hit a few weeks later when she swung my driver and hit the ground too hard, breaking the shaft. We are working our way back from that. lol.
I would also love to know what peaked your interest the most, what convinced you to dive in?

I started this board a few months ago to connect with other women on the Refuge, so I know there is at least one woman. :golfing_man:t3:‍♀

@Paul - I guess I would have to say that I decided to start learning to play after I spent the last couple of years becoming a bigger fan of watching/learning about the professional game. I have always liked watching sports - all kinds of sports - but for whatever reason had never given golf a try. Then I basically accidentally watched the US open in 2015, and I loved it. After that, I only watched the majors for the next couple seasons, kind of like I still do for tennis majors, March Madness, etc, because they’re exciting to watch but they’re not necessarily something I care about all the time, and truthfully I didn’t even think they played golf more often than that. I mean I figured they DID but that it really didn’t matter enough to watch. (#KoepkaMentality) (also might be the real truth)

Eventually I found No Laying Up on Twitter, then started listening to the pod regularly. Like I said way up top, not sure I ever would have been a true golf “fan” otherwise. I guess just learning about the game in this super fun and casual but yet informative way made me want to actually dive in more and now I spend more time than is probably healthy watching/reading/thinking about golf, which is something I never would have predicted about myself.

I think the next natural step was wanting to learn how to play since that seems to be such a big part of why so many other people love golf - I wanted to understand why everyone says it’s so frustrating and yet so rewarding. I also wanted to know what makes a shot I see on TV good, bad, etc because if I never try to do it myself, I have no context for how good the pros/top ams actually are. That’s why I’ve always liked watching baseball (although honestly I don’t watch much anymore), because I’ve played softball my whole life and obviously I’m nowhere near as good as a pro, but I feel like I understand what’s happening on the field both mentally and physically, if that makes any sense. Plus, I love playing sports, learning new things, and being outside - this is everything wrapped up in one.

Maybe that was a longer reply than you wanted but there you have it

Also watching all these videos of everyone playing golf together with their best friends looks like a total blast.

I think this is awesome to hear - If you like watching golf that much - you will most likely be hooked for life when you start playing. Yes - it’s incredibly hard. And that’s the point. It makes any achievements you make so much better that way. The pros are So much better than I can even comprehend. Not because of their distance so much as their consistency and distance/trajectory control. And maybe even most of all - their putting. So dont be afraid to be bad at golf, and don’t be afraid to hit down on the ball to make it go up. Just make sure you follow through the ball to the target and you’ll be fine. Keep us updated !

Thanks for the back story, super interesting. It’s so fascinating how the game can grab people in so many different ways.
And you are 100% correct, having some firsthand experience playing the game will make watching more interesting. Try to sink a 30 ft putt on a fast, sloped green, and you better understand how difficult it is when you see them do it regularly. Try to hit a tee shot with a few strangers watching, and it gives you a taste of how hard it must be to play with thousands of people watching.
Enjoy the journey, it really is a sport unlike any other.

I have to believe playing softball will give you some power moves to leverage into your golf swing. Guessing the grip will feel strange, it’s a good thing to get initial guidance on. Good luck!

@NotGreat to this point, as a former baseball player who didn’t pick up golf until my twenties (and then quit again until my mid-30s), I wish I had gotten grip and set-up coaching at the outset to train some muscle memory when I first started. The move was almost too familiar to baseball for me to really learn and internalize the key differences. But I think once you get that down, you’ll be better equipped to generate power and good contact than most adult beginners.

I have definitely noticed this already. It’s close but also completely different, which is super frustrating. The difference I appreciate most though is that the ball isn’t moving now - I always did have trouble reading a fast pitch.

Luckily no sliders from a teed ball, unless the drinking has really gotten out of hand. I was a light-hitting slap hitter used to going oppo - hitting driver straight was . . . challenging.

I also liked to watch baseball more than football or basketbll because I had slightly more experience and thus more appreciation of what they were doing and how hard it was. I also don’t watch as much anymore, due to a diminishing store of patience. Or maybe my patience is just used up in other places.

As far as golf, I like to misquote JFK (on the campus of my alma mater).

Hi ladies. Could throw this in the Silk Road thread but thought this might be a better place for it.

My buddy found a sweet pair of Under Armour golf shoes in my size a few months back so I had him grab them for me. Unfortunately they turned out to be a women’s size 10.5 instead of men’s.

Message me if you’re interested.

My buddy’s daughter is +2.5. One of the best looking golf swings I’ve ever seen. Her grandfather played D1 golf, as did her uncle. Her father and other uncle are both single digits, so she grew up around the game, although she did not start playing until HS.

@Sarah Saw you got in on the Scotland trip! Congrats! Any other ladies get in?

Wanted to go, but was not able to pull the trigger that quick. For me and the hubs to both go would have been so much $$$$ and we have a bunch of other trips coming up between now and then.

Def going to whatever the next domestic event ends up being lol.
