I can’t think of a better group to whom a can address for this info: my 13 yo daughter is getting into the game. I’m soo stoked! Not sure if she’s going to go full sicko yet or not (probably - apple trees make apples!), so I’m not going all in on equipment yet. Got her some 2nd hand clubs and fairway woods. Now looking for a driver. Anything you guys would recommend? I know the easy answer is a fitting, but I’d like for her to get some lessons and more rounds under her belt first. If anyone has anything they are looking to offload, let me know - I know, I know…this isn’t the Silk Road…I just thought this might be the low hanging fruit. Also, any other words of advice for getting a young lady into the game would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!
I’m going to Pebble Beach for first time in early November (wildfires and Covid permitting) and I’m trying to plan clothing. I have UnderArmour, fleeces, rain gear. Should I get a lightweight down jacket? I have a heavy down vest for winter play in the East, but it’s bulky. Also, if I do get down jacket, recommend any brands? Any suggestions are most appreciated!
I played a lot of par 3 course golf at that age and just hitting at the range using whatever clubs the range had for “rental” aka give them a dollar to ensure you would bring it back. I learned to swing with those old literal woods and crappy old irons.
I would suggest finding a 2nd hand driver as well. I had crap clubs (like would buy those sets that came with everything) until the mid-late 2000s. My husband’s grandmother, though, had like every new club that would come out so when we would go visit her I’d play with whatever she would put together for me. Her taylormade burner driver (think it was 07) ended up being the driver that I felt most comfortable with, consistently hit well and ended up buying one. Had it in my bag for about 8 years until I finally got “a real fitting” - and still ended up with a TM driver lol.
I would also recommend looking at kids Robin Golf clubs! They do come as a set though.
So. I know I should be happy about women’s golf day and callaway has some women’s content and new clubs but…
What. Is. This. Imaging.
I legit thought this was a weird smooth jazz or shaving cream ad while scrolling insta yesterday. Or shampoo.
That is baaaaaad. So many questions…
Why is her head shrunken? Why is the golf ball by her hat? Are the shaving cream/shampoo lines supposed to be R’s for Reva? Is that the actual real Big Bertha?
I’m still wondering if Callaway is coming out with a shaving gel…
WHO CAN SAY!!??!!
My wife hates the direction OEMs (and specifically Callaway) towards women golfers. She is been wanting to start playing, but her equipment requirements are “don’t look like a 60 year old women uses them.” This ad doesn’t exactly help.
why is REVA should for revolution?
Which sucks because Callaway is actually great for women’s stuff! Their irons aren’t pink and available in women’s lefty!
They are getting better, but I remember showing her a couple of complete set options with a bag and she gave it an immediate no. I wish some of the women IG golf influencers would spend a little of their effort trying to get the OEMs to design a trendy women’s set and bag. They’ve made some great strides with clothes lately, it’d be nice to take that to the equipment.
agreed - part of the problem is that most of the influencers aren’t playing starter sets so they probably aren’t super in-tune with that gear. I have the callaway rogue irons and love the look of them, but I believe some of the Callaway Solitaire stuff (the starter sets) are pretty old lady-ish.
I picked my wife up a set of Adams clubs a few years ago on clearance. Full set and bag for $150 and they actually look great. The bag is grey, white, and baby blue and doesn’t really give off the “old lady” vibes which is clutch. She doesn’t feel self conscious with this set, which is great. It’s too bad that there is this seemingly huge disconnect.
That was the first thing I showed her. She said it looked like something the old women at our club would use. And she was absolutely not using something that could mistaken for a 60 year old women’s bag. haha.
I’m sure the influencers just haven’t thought about because like you said, they aren’t using that equipment. But that also gets into my issue with a lot of golf influencers today. They want to act like they are like the average golf and think that we all play courses that are easy to walk with our bespoke bag and forged blades. But in reality they’re way too much LA, NY or South Beach to be a regular golfer. But that’s a completely different conversation. haha.
Agreed - although I did message Kira Dixon about her clubs and they were a Callaway set not too different from mine.
As @ChickPhilA so eloquently put it…WHO CAN SAY!?!
“What if we did a modernist a Georgia O’Keeffe and then fused some additional Futurism into it to convey ‘speed’ and liberate women from the shackles of golf’s past?”
NAILED IT.
Lots of dudes in the ladies thread.
