NLU Ladies

My golf-adjacent employer has had issues getting good focus group feedback from non-old lady golfers. I considered taking some samples to my club on ladies league night, but it’s 90% old lady golfers, so I don’t think it would help much.

It is tough - I find if I go to ladies nights/ladies groups sort of events I’m usually the youngest by a significant margin. And I’m pretty middle aged!

That’s how my wife feels as well. As much as I like to think, we aren’t exactly young anymore. But I’d say the average age of the women golfers at our club is probably 65. It’s hard to find people for her to follow. And people like paige spiranac and belen muñoz aren’t really helping. I get why the golf world is behind, but you’d think that would be an untapped market.

Do you have an Executive Women’s Golf Association affiliate near you? In Palm Beach County, where I played with them, there were a lot of young working women who played. They held clinics for newcomers to the game also, helping to understand rules, etiquette, etc. It’s a good outfit.

Hi ladies! I’m new to the refuge. Not new to golf, but new to the refuge. I’ve started playing a lot more during COVID and I’m getting obsessed/serious about my game.

I’m super excited to have found this board and to continue finding community through the game.

Welcome! Stoked to have you join!

Glad you’re here!

COVID has been good to my golf game as well. I’ve played 3x more rounds than I did last year. A small bright spot in 2020!

Hope you enjoy this weird, wonderful place!

Welcome!!! One of the bright spotS in COVID time has been how much golf I’ve played. Lol.

Glad you found us and glad to have you her e 9n the refuge!!

So pumped to have another female NLU sicko! @Sarah @madkins @ChickPhilA are three members that are amazing to pay attention to as you lose hours of your life reading the threads here on the refuge. It’s addicting!

Welcome - hope to see you at a meetup/event soon.

Welcome! Thrilled that you have found your way back to golf. Silver linings! My club in Delaware offered a fall series of beginner clinics for 12 players. We doubled that, and expanded each group to 16. Golf is such a great sport, especially for women.

Ladies!

My wife has expressed interest in a 3 wood. I personally dont know if she’s quite ready for one, but, she wants one, and who am i to stop her.

I think i’ll be looking for a Ping G something 15-17 degree head, but i’d like to hear opinions on a shaft.

No clue what her swing speed would be, as shes been working on improving via lessons since shes started. Every time she starts to hit it good, she goes back in for lessons. We’re trading long term potential for short term gains here. Started playing in the fall of 2018. A good PW goes like 105 for her, a REALLY good PW flys probably 80. She is so dependent on strike and roll out for yardages its a little tricky still. She has basically a full set but lacks a fairway wood.

Current shafts that shes kinda been fit for in her irons are Mitsubishi MMT 48 gram shafts, and in her driver she has the stock cobra NV 50 gram shaft.

I’d like to find something decent for her. Shooting to stay in the $150-200 price range, lightly used is fine.

I just dont know where to start with womens shafts.

So, hopefully thats enough background, i wish it was more straightforward.

I hit the Epic Flash 3 wood a while back when I was being fitted. Loved it and have the Sub Zero driver. Quick look on CPO has them for $150ish or less. I think standard loft is 15 degrees. I see a ton of these in the bags of female members at my club. Some single digit handicappers and some 30+ handicappers. It was a breeze to hit for me, but my 3 hybrid was my newest club in the bag at the time and I was doing enough damage getting irons and a driver.

I’m ignorant when it comes to flex shafts. Someone else might have to help there.

That’s awesome she’s getting so into it and sounds like she’s got some speed too!

Yes! That has been fun, seeing her able to get to every green in reg now with ease when she has a couple solid strikes.

So you just have the stock ladies flex shaft in your 3 wood? i was trying to piece one together on ebay but that seems like too much to ask. Not really into the “ladies clubs” thing. Would rather buy a real head for her.

I love my Callaway rogue woods (albiet only a 7 and 5 wood). Callaway pre-owned has some good deals

Yeah i got her a couple hybrids from there. Was kinda hoping to make it a really mixed up bag and not too callaway centric.

Cobra driver.
Callaway hybrids.
PXG 0211 irons (the cheaper ones)
Callaway md4 wedges
My old Scotty 1.5 Newport putter
Jones bag.

I think a Ping fwy would be a perfect addition. Sooo easy to hit for me. And would keep her from becoming too brand loyal.

Hey ladies, Carolyn here- fairly new to the refuge but have been enjoying it a lot! I was really happy to see a ladies thread! Went to a local NLU event yesterday and was the only woman there (shocker) - felt a little bit of pressure to really represent the ladies. Jokes on me because I won highest score…

Sorry, responded quickly and that was a bit confusing. I hit the men’s Epic Flash 3 wood when I was fit, and I have the men’s Epic Flash head and stock men’s shaft in my driver. I haven’t hit any of the women’s clubs Callaway offers. I just know that the men’s was a breeze for me to hit and the women at my club who have an Epic Flash are obsessed. I think one of them got it first and like 6 of them ordered it right after they saw her hit it.

I also loved the Ping woods I hit. A bit more forgiving than Epic Flash too. I just hit the Epic Flash quite a bit farther.

Right. I wanted to lean towards a “mens” head rather than a womens. Seems like the majority of “womens” clubs are budget minded and thats not the goal here.

I bought a 19 degree Ping Le 3 wood this year and I love it. It has a Senior shaft, which is stiffer than the ladies. Second Swing has a number of them on its site, but they probably have the stock ladies shaft.

Hope your wife grows to love the game!

If she’s got some speed and the shaft weight doesn’t vary greatly from men to women’s, I’d go with the men’s club for sure.
