Idk but having tried both now I think I land in the “old man yells at cloud” camp and just want to go back to mp3s on my college laptop. Or maybe I should hit up the vinyl thread
I have become completely enamored with “Dollar Bill Bar” the second track in this video. Not because it’s overly great, although it has found its way deep into my brain, seemingly out of nowhere, on multiple occasions recently, but because of the ending.
Toward the end of the song, it breaks, she plays alone and sings
which is very beautiful, but obviously has a ton of sadness in it, too. It’s absolutely wonderful. But we’re here because in the Tiny Desk version, the first version I had ever heard, they come right into a nice little boppy ending after “you’re better off alone”, complete with synchronized dance. It ends the song on an upbeat note, despite a rather downer lyrical ending.
But in the studio version, it just ends after “you’re better off alone.” The first time I heard it and realized they weren’t coming back in, I let out an audible ohhhh maaaannn all alone in my car.
It’s absolutely fucking incredible to me how much different this song is with 30 seconds more, or less. And I can’t stop thinking about what made her decide to add the bop. Maybe she thought it was a downer and it was too much of a downer live, maybe she wrote it depressed and ain’t there anymore, maybe the bop just works (and it does!) but holy fucking lord I am obsessed with that ending right now.
Pop music should always be this good.
New music Friday: I Don't Know How But They Found Me! - Album by Jensen McRae - Apple Music great album by a really good vocalist and some fun pop production on some tracks
Bloodless - Album by Samia - Apple Music hopefully a strong follow up to “Honey”
Not that new anymore, but I’ve been spinning the latest MMJ album a lot and it seems to get better with each listen.
New PUP and new Propagandhi on back to back days is fucking insane. Haven’t listened to either yet, but what an embarrassment of riches.
Both my preorders have shipped, it’s taking all my energy to wait for the records to show up instead of just instant gratifying it on Spotify.
Fortunately, I got the new superheaven last week and it’s better than I expected.
God, the riff in At Peace GOES
It took me two listens because I didn’t really like the production right away, but that song is fucking nuts. Huge fan.
Neither of the other two singles have done anything for me yet though.
Same for PUP. I’m sure I will like that record plenty, but I have listened to a few songs and I’m very lukewarm so far.
Yeah I’ve only gone through the PUP record once and there are some definite bops but it hasn’t smacked me in the face yet like the self-titled did the first time I listened to that
Almost Turnstile GLOW ON-esque where I catch myself grooving but not really listening (which is a great record, before @Battisstatus gets upset)
I really like Turnstile’s Tiny Desk thing and cannot listen to their records at all. I just don’t really get Turnstile. I don’t need a slightly heavier 311 in my life.
As a certified Not Turnstile Superfan I don’t know that there’s anything to get… It’s like - hey, you like Trapped Under Ice? What if you took the same guys and genres didn’t matter at all? Oh, so like TUI but lighter? Yes. And no. And electronic. And not!
Just wait until you hear Angel Du$t.
Turnstile, Angel Du$t, Ceremony, all hardcore bands that folks flipped their shit over that make me go
I love Turnstile. Not necessarily because they are/were “hardcore”
But because I think their music is just them. Like what they like or are into at that time.
This may be out of left field, but the first time I heard the song “Mystery” it blew my freaking mind. It almost reminded me of INXS , but if they were a little more “hardcore”
I understand why people don’t like their music, and that’s ok.
But for me, they are one of a few bands/artists I think could get me to come out to my house and spend money to see perform live for obscene ticket prices.
Got tickets to see Blink-182 during their reunion tour where Turnstile was opening. Immediately started listening to their music in preparation and honestly really started to get into it on the 2nd or 3rd listen through.
Their set up in person however absolutely stunk. To the point where I couldn’t understand the vocalist even a little and the sound was just a cacophony. I haven’t turned their music on since honestly which makes me sad.
Hate this but it could have been a venue issue or a positioning issue. One of the reasons I usually try to stay close to FOH/engineers at live shows because the mix is usually best around there.
I meant it more as a critique of when they first came out (step 2 rhythm & nonstop feeling era). Couldn’t go to a show and not see 10 kids wearing their shirts even back then, I’m sure its even crazier now. I listened and it was just fine but didn’t want to make me rush out and buy it. That said, I am a known hater of bands that people like. I love to talk shit about bands people love while I sit in my corner and listen to the same comeback kid record from 20 years ago
I’ve always accepted that it’s not for me, it still just blows my mind a bit that these bands evolve the way they do and get such a massive following in today’s music scene. Truly wild times. Good for them!
