The course was absolutely worth the drive and the price. Firm and fast greens, fantastic views of the mountains, and definitely some drivable holes with firm fairways and elevation changes. Sugarloaf is under new ownership and you can see the effort that they are putting in with the clubhouse updates and the quality of the golf course. Highly recommend this gem. Pics to come…
Only a forty minute drive from where I grew up, wish I would’ve been golfing way back when. That said, I’d be down for a road trip
That’s the one! Course was fantastic, I had played white deer when I was a Lycoming student and was expecting more of that flat valley golf but it was kind of like white deer on steroids with the slope and the firm and fast greens were so much fun.
Looks amazing and I’d be up for a road trip too, @MikeRevak !
I’ve heard good things. Have never made the journey though.
Had our golf trip to the Lancaster area this past week. Thank you to everyone who helped pick out the courses, we had a great time. Stayed in downtown Lancaster, and played 3 courses in the surrounding areas.
-
Iron Valley - Played here on Thursday around 12:30 and literally had the course to ourselves. Other than the par 5’s around the water, this course was really fun.
-
Wyncote - This is a top notch public course, that really has everything you can want. Had a blast here, but man is it windy!
-
Dauphin Highlands - You can tell this place gets a ton of run, but it is definitely well taken care. Not a ton of trouble to be found, nice Saturday round to close out the trip.
Used to play The Loaf yearly when me and my buddies used to go back to Bloomsburg for our baseball fundraiser. Was always in great condition and the beers were cheap!
I do not recall ever playing this course without blitzing wind. Not sure why its always so windy there. Its not a short course to begin with, when you add the wind it can be a brut.
Glad you had a good time! I live in downtown Lanc, so you were right in my neck of the woods. Good course choices.
Combining the wind with the 50 degree weather was a bit rough. Course definitely seemed exposed, due to the lack of trees, so I’m not surprised it’s usually windy there.
Gents. We’re hosting a 2 Man Gross Event in late October at my club. Take a look at the details and please sign up if interested. The course’s website is waynesborocc.com
I will be spending 2 days in Hanover this week. Is there a good practice facility or executive course not too far from Hanover? Probably not time for 18 on a full sized course, but would love to get some practice in.
Thanks
Is this what use to be the Eldon Joyner Invitational?
I don’t believe, but I haven’t been a member long enough to remember what that was. This was more to mimic gross events we’ve played in at other clubs.
The only course I’ve played over there was Hanover Country Club. I remember their practice facilities being pretty decent, but you might need help getting on there.
Eldon was the long time pro many, many years ago. He was considered the Harvey Penick of our area. Incredible teacher who taught each student differently and in unique ways. When I was a teenager and my family was a member he and his friend Dutch (a very long time member) where the two old guys that would show up everyday for lunch and then would hold court on the driving range. As a kid it really upped my street cred when they accepted me into their group and I would routinely get to play with them.
Every fall we had the Eldon Joyner Invitation that was a two man best ball event. I don’t remember if it was 18 holes or 36, but sounds like it was basically like this event.
If that was the format then yes it would be very similar. We have lots of references around the course to his tenure, but he pre-dated me for sure.
Anyone familiar with the Hershey CC Courses? We’re staying at the lodge next weekend, and I’m thinking about trying to convince my wife to let me bring the sticks. Are the courses worth the ask?
Goes without saying if I do play and there’s any Refugees near by, it’d be awesome to meet up!
Never played any of them but they look nice and I have always heard positive things.
I’ve always want to, but haven’t played them but been by them hundreds of times. I believe the West course is the one to play and I think it use to be private but now appears to be available for resort guests. They also have a little 9 hole course for quick loops. It almost closed down during COVID, but it seems like it’s back open. It’s honestly a nice area for a course and now will be peak lead color. I’d say do it if you can, but at the same time, I wouldn’t push too hard. It’s nice, but not Pinehurst nice.
Yeah…it’s a family trip, but we’ll see. Do you know if November there is still posting season?
Edit: answered my own question, it is posting szn until 11/14.
