A thread for the Texas folks

I can’t make it. I work that weekend unfortunately. I didn’t want to speak up because it looked like a lot of people could only make the weekend you chose. Thanks for the consideration though.

Thanks for the insight! Ended up going with Balcones since it is about 2 minutes from home. Proximity to our house drove the decision. Easy for my wife to hop over with our 3 year old to get to the pool. Course is mediocre, but I am content since it is so easy to get to. Allows me to get in a 9 practically every day after work. You are correct on price…allows me a place to go during the week and I still get to keep my regular weekend games with my friends at all the other courses I want to play. Win/Win for me.

You absolutely should go this route @IrbySeth . Links at Lands End is a great set up for lodging + golf. Great food in the clubhouse as well.

Sorry if I came across harsh on the course, it definitely serves its purpose. We live farther down off Mopac and Far West, so it was just far enough to not be easy to do before or after work (I work downtown-well, I do whenever I go back to the office), as I was fighting traffic at least one direction. Glad you are enjoying it!

Not harsh at all. Just the truth. Lol.

There are some technical difficulties with new threads there.

We’ll do it live! and move to appropriate category when it opens up.

Event: The Dallas Golden Age Classic

Date: Sunday, July 19, 2020

Schedule:

  • Morning Round at Golf Club of Dallas: 7:30 A.M - 8:10 A.M. (5 foursomes) $59.99 ride/$46.00 walk
  • Lunch: TBD (will be patio and socially distanced)
  • Afternoon Round at Cedar Crest Golf Course: 2:36 P.M. - 3:12 P.M. (5 foursomes) $38.00 ride/$21.00 walk
  • Scoring and NIT Qualification Format: TBD

Final Answers Due July 10 for Booking.

Based on current responses, there are 3 spots still open for the morning or all day and five spots open for the afternoon. Those who have confirmed their availability are already in. We may be able to add more tee times if we go above 20, so if you’re interested, put your name on the sheet and if we fill up, we’ll at least put you as an alternate.

Charitable Cause: Cedar Crest’s I Am A Golfer Foundation. https://www.iamagolfer.com/, which funds instruction, internships, and scholarships with a focus on South Dallas. Given current discussions we’ve had elsewhere on the board, and Laz’s great article on diversity in golf, this is one of the few golf courses that puts the inclusion it speaks about into practice, across the board with its management, teaching professionals, staff, students, and the customers who play there. And it has been that way for decades.

Love this charity, great work picking

should be a fun event as long as we can still play golf by then!

well guise, it’s official… I’ll be moving to Dallas at the beginning of September after accepting a new job allowing me to work remote. Haven’t really figured out exactly where in the city we’ll be living but currently looking mostly at houses in Bishop Arts District, as well as up in the northern burbs like Addison, Richardson, and Garland. Wish I was there in time for the Golden Age Classic in a couple of weeks but hoping to get out for some rounds with as many of you as possible in the future! Would love any recommendations related to housing, golf, or really anything.

Additionally, my fiancee has her Texas real estate license and would love to get back into it via an assistant position when we get out there if anyone knows anybody looking to bring in someone like that.

Not sure if your fiancé has any interest in this but my wife works for a company called Smartcity. They specialize in apartment/condo locating. Have to be a Licensed RE agent. Independent contractors. Happy to pass along her resume to my wife, just send me a DM.

That’s great news and we look forward to welcoming you to town. Are you looking to buy a house or find a home to rent while figuring out what where in town you want to live? I ask because Addison is primarily a rental market with some condos/townhomes for sale.

We’re looking to rent for the first year while we figure out the different areas and ideally it’s a house with some type of yard for our dog. Your comments about Addison sound about right because we haven’t really been able to find many house options in that area when we’ve been looking.

I know you said you are working remote… but lets think glass half full and long term…do you have an office you would go to down the road? travel for work? etc. Proximity to office and airport to me are big drivers of location.

(and golf courses)

I will definitely do some travel once all the COVID stuff (hopefully) settles down (30-40%). In terms of office, that’s kind of tough to say. I’m only like the 10th employee in the US and first outside of my department’s VP. If we did end up getting an office in Dallas it would probably be up to me where we got one and would probably be a WeWork type space even then. Proximity to airport would be nice and proximity to quality golf courses would be a must. I think Bishop Arts District would be fun to live in next to Stevens Park and Cedar Crest but understand it’s probably still a little rough in that area?

Gotcha. So prox to DFW and Love would be decently high on your list.

That prob takes Garland out (I imagine you are thinking the far north part of Richardson where Garland/Plano/and Richardson all meet close to the Firewheel area)

Bishop Arts is really cool, and tons of stuff to do. It not anywhere near as rough as it used to be and is developing like wild fire…but it is its own unique demographic compared to other pockets. The big downfall of that area is that there just isn’t any grocery. Which doesnt sound like that big of a deal but from my buddies that live over there they say its just such a pain in the ass to travel 15+ minutes to get groceries…

If you like that pocket though maybe take a look at Sylvan30 area…a little closer in to downtown and the newer developing West Dallas pocket and lots more stuff planned. Prob equal distance from Bishop and Trinity Groves.

If I was young and without kids I would crush it again in Uptown area, used to love parking my car on a Friday and not getting into it again until monday am…and walking everywhere. (granted dont do much driving at all nowadays)

Non of your options you listed are bad…they are just very different in terms of location, etc.

Love the detailed feedback here and will definitely check out the options in the Sylvan30/West Dallas area. My fiancee loves going to the grocery store for some unknown reason so I’m sure she would appreciate not having to drive 15 minutes to find one.

def get some of the younger hipper gents on here to opine…I am 40 with 2 kids and yearn for my mid 20’s of debauchery in uptown etc…so I may be a bit skewed.

It’s all about what you want to be doing. It sounds to me like Addison would be a good place for the first year if you’re renting. I’ve lived in the area for the last 2 years and I’m not kidding when I tell you pretty much everything is within at least 20 min of the area. If you want to go Downtown it is about 15 min, and then you can get around to a ton of public tracks all around town in a reasonable amount of time. It also has the most restaurants per square mile in the entire United States so plenty of food options too.

Negatives about Addison - other than dinner, you won’t “go out” there. Traffic around there blows (635, Belt Line, etc…), yes lots of restaurants but 95% of them are chains, etc.

My recommendations:
Bishop Arts/Greater Oak Cliff (Sylvan 30 incl.)
Deep Ellum
M Streets/Greenville
Uptown/Knox Henderson
East Dallas (adjacent to White Rock Lake)
Cedars

Don’t know your age or what y’all like to do, but count me in the staunchly anti-Addison crowd.
