Has anyone been out to see the renovation at Gus Wortham recently? Looks to be getting some positive press.
I went the Sunday after it opened and it was in great shape. Still has a few areas that need some time to grow in completely, but it’s hard to believe its the same piece of property. Compared to how it used to be the greens are alot more dramatic with lots of false fronts and they extended hole 6 to the original green area. They were out of a trailor and not using the old clubhouse which was kinda puzzling, but its worth giving it a shot at about $48.

has anyone signed up for this? looks interesting.
Tapatio Springs is a fun track. It is outside of San Antonio, in Boerne. The club house burned down a year ago but I believe just call ahead.
I’m a little late to the Refuge but once I saw a fellow Baylor golfer, sic’em @birdiesforthebears , I figured I should say hi. I’m down in Houston and don’t get to play too often since I’m a new dad. I just picked up the game about 2 years ago. NLU helped foster my golf curiosity into a passion. I’ve played mostly private courses with friends and family here in Houston. Would love to get out to Gus Wortham now that the restoration/renovation is complete.
@RedMcGov just moved back to ATX. Always down to play if you all are interested.
College student in DFW. Stevens Park, Cedar Crest, Tenison Highlands are all solid. Supposedly Luna Vista’s on that level too, trying to get out there and over to Ft Worth for Rockwood. Irving Golf Club (formerly Twin Wells) looks like it’ll be great once it re-opens after renovation. Always looking for other cheap, solid courses for a college budget if anyone has recommendations!
Way too late to the discussion and sic em. I started Golf Architecture of Texas to grow a solid architecture group in the state. Always trying to find some good values and meet up with other architecture people. Hit up the website here or find it on Twitter https://gatexas.wixsite.com/gatx
Been following the twitter for a little bit now.
- Any tips to get on Whispering Pines?
- We need a Raven Nest course profile. One of my favorite courses in Texas.
I’m in Austin, live in Northwest Hills
Great stuff! I’ve gotten to play both courses at GC of Houston, The Woodlands CC - Tournament, TPC San Antonio - Canyons, Carlton Woods - Nicklaus, and a couple others that are kind of noteworthy. If you’re interested in my thoughts or pictures for a future course profile on any of those, give me a shout.
Would love to have some more course profiles. Just send me an email and we can get some more content on the site
Getting on WP is a rough one. All depends on who you know. The only ways to get on is with a member or if you know a caddie and can go on a caddy play day. Raven Nest is very solid and has a really underrated design. Holes like 10 and 16 are really good. Also has some variety
My previous firm had a corporate membership and I was able to play out there three times. Place is incredible.
I grew up about 5 miles north of the course as a crow flies, and I’ve never even seen it. Problem is not many people who live around Whispering Pines play there lol.
Just got back to Austin. Think I’m going to do the Falcon Ridge/Avery Ranch/Terra Vista package for now. Let me know if you’re down to play.
@thefriedegg now reporting that Tom Doak is renovating Memorial Park… I’m giddy with excitement.

I can’t wait to see how it looks when he’s done. Played it twice the last few months and each time I’ve wondered how they’d manage to hold a PGA Tour event there.
I think the same thing every time I play it. They would have to move 8 green back into the trees to even get that hole to about 520. On 13 they would have to move the Tee box across the street past if they want to keep it around a par 71-72. It just seems like they will have to add tee boxes that are only used by the pro’s on a few holes.
No PGA/Frisco relocation talk here! Gonna be interesting to see what they develop up there.
