A thread for the Texas folks

Texas folks, talk to me about Horseshoe Bay. Tagging along on a buddies trip there the end of February. I don’t know the planner and am joining last minute so I didn’t really get a say in the course selection. Playing Apple, Ram, and Slick. Look like they’re going to be typical hard RTJ but fun courses. From what I gather no one going is a stick - all probably range from 5-15 handicaps. Will we hate it? Will we love it?

It will be a beat down but you’ll love it. I went down and played all three in Sep. At Ram dont hit driver on the back nine and take plenty of golf balls. If you are playing two courses in a day play slick for the second round, it is easily the most gettable of the courses and not quite such a grind. They are all awesome courses and a ton of fun to play

I repeat, take plenty of balls

Does anyone know if there is a decent par three course in the San Antonio area?

I’m a big fan of San Pedro. They renovated not too long ago so everything is in nice shape. It’s got lights and a bar, so it stays open pretty late if you’re into that.

Haha thank you for this message. Will be sure to pass it along to the group.

San Pedro is great. Always in good condition and like you said it is lighted so you can play at night.

I havent played it since 2016 and I think that they have made some changes since then. Some thoughts:

  1. There are a few holes where a creek / water is hidden and will gobble balls that you think were safe, so if they have the gps in the cart with the map actively use it.
  2. There is a stupid long island par 3 with no real out. Make use of the drop zone that is off on the right if I remember right so you dont just pump balls into the moat, the greens are slick and I remember 3 of us hitting the green and still ending up in the water.
  3. I would play as a group that birdie moves back, bogey moves up. I think the standard tees are only 6k or so, so the advice to hit iron is definitely legit. I would also say that you should hit to the top of the rolling hill tops that always seem to be about 200 from the tee, there is almost always trouble on the other side of that hill.

Awesome. Thanks for this! I’m glad to know it won’t be necessary to fix my driver woes over the winter to prepare for the place.

In reply to #2. I hit that green and ended up in the water. That was on Ramrock like #4-5 or somewhere around there

ATX Golfers

Have a 9:24 (11/24) tee time this Sunday at Plum Creek. Looking for 1 to complete the foursome. Round I think comes out to $60 or so with a cart. Golfers in the group range from 3-10 HDCP.

Let me know if you’re into playing. Usually play once a weekend around the Austin area.

Well stated. Horseshoe Bay is always a great trip. If there is any way you can work a round in at Summit Rock … Don’t hesitate

Longtime NLU content fan, first time refuge poster. I’m out of Boerne (SATX area). If anyone’s ever looking to golf in SA or the Hill Country, hit me up. Currently a 16.1 index but I play fast and (mostly) keep it in play.

Anyone make it out to Memorial Park after the redesign? Thoughts?

I managed to get on last weekend. They have changed the reservation policy, you can only book 3 days out (online reservation open at 0600 3 days before), and right now tee times are going fast!

Prior to closing for the renovation I played at Memorial Park GC every other week, and it was one of my fav courses in the area, so I was a little hesitant with what they might do. All the holes follow the original/previous routing, however they have made some serious changes. They have removed a lot of trees and almost all the bunkers. The biggest change is to the green complexes. All of them have been completely redone, are now almost all elevated with some serious slopes and penal drop-offs. A lot of good looking holes.

It will take some time for the course to get up to really good playing conditions as we are entering dormant season in Texas (little grass growth between now and Spring). Next Spring should be excellent.

The best bit is this course is still less than $40 for green fee, which is truly awesome for what will be a regular stop on the PGA tour. If you get a chance you need to play it.

Cheers.

I play around Fredericksburg quite a bit. Next time I’m down that way we can put something together

Awesome, sounds like a plan.

Shot in the dark, and short notice. Anyone in the Plano/Allen/McKinney/Frisco area want to play today? Looking at 12:30 tee times. Leaving work now, so if you’re interested shoot me a text: (785-230-5868)

Twin Creek is $34

The guys at Axis Golf Academy are the best. EJ or Alan…Ben too.
