A thread for the Texas folks

The Tap that @GCinDC mentioned has the best chile colorado (recommend it in a burrito) I’ve ever had and is probably my favorite bar in the area. But it is a dive lol.

Hell yeah homie. I’m an eastsider too — grew up playing Vista Hills (RIP), Lone Star and Horizon

Thanks for the recs. Have some research to do this week. Will report back on what I get them and how they enjoy their trip.

Colonial update.

Coming to Grapevine in late January for a business conference. Got a window to fit 18 holes in before the plane flight home.

Would u recommend to pony up and pay extra to play Cowboys GC or to pay less and play Grapevine GC? We can afford to pay the extra for Cowboys GC if it truly is a legit course and experience.

Thanks in advance for the advice and thoughts.

Most of the appeal of Cowboys is the inclusive food and nonalcoholic beverages. Grapevine can be a tough tee time but it’s 90% the course that cowboys is. Texas star isn’t too far away and it’s better than both.

Also, PGA Frisco 25 min away is the same price as cowboys but a better day for sure.

I would recommend Rangers, and Grapevine before cowboys.

Have never played Texas Star but heard it’s a good course

Hello friends,
Heading down to the plex for the packer game this weekend. Staying with sister and brother in law in Plano.

Doesn’t look like many of the courses mentioned in the thread previously are in their area. anyone have recs for the Plano area?

Much appreciated!

A lot of courses will be closed this weekend because of the freeze coming. The bermuda greens at the public courses in the area have been hit pretty hard the last couple winter cycles, so some are tarping up as early as tomorrow.

In the Plano area, a lot of our crew will play out at Pecan Hollow. Not sure what their schedule is.

Pecan Hollow is your top option in Plano. You can venture a wee bit further North to Watters Creek in Allen (10-20 minute drive) where they have a decent course as well as a robust short course complex. Personally, I like Twin Rivers in Allen more than both of those, but it is a little bit off of the main highways.

Thank you!!

With anything in the Plex, check your map app for the true measure of time. Plano is sneaky big so you could be five minutes from Watters and ten from Twin Creeks, but be 15 from Pecan. Or you are 25 from all of them.

Hmmm… my guess is Filete Durango?

Hoping you began with some cheese panela and closed with a Cafe Pierre. If not, we have reasons for you to come back when there’s better weather!

We started with the panela and quail- both unbelievable

This was the filete cantinflas- also delicious

Shout out the Mexican mule as well

True story: the first time my wife and I went there while we were dating, we got the panela which they will split on to two plates for you as a couple. The exact same item, just split into two for us. As soon as the waiter walked off… she went for mine to try what I was having. An involuntary reflex. I watched in awe.

Every time we get it I ask if she’d like to try my panela.

I’m looking for some historical golf info from the DFW guis. My dad grew up in Arlington heights and did most of his playing in the area probably between 1970-74. I’m trying to dig up info on some of the courses he may have played (he’s not around anymore to ask, unfortunately). The hope is to play some of them eventually, but I’m just trying to narrow down what was around and accessible back then.

He was definitely a public gui, so far I think he likely played at Meadowbrook, Rockwood Park, the River course at Pecan Valley, but I’m not sure of any others. I’m not sure he was venturing out further or not or if he was jumping the fence at Colonial, I think he was mostly dewsweeping with my grandfather. Any info helps, TIA! We’ll be in the area in late April so I might start sniffing around for a good course rec around then.

I bet he played Z. Boaz which was on west side but now a city park. Also Sycamore Creek, a 9 hole course on the east side, also now a city park. If he ever headed further east might have played Lake Arlington, an Arlington municipal course, which is still open.
