A thread for the Texas folks

It’s been said by @MerchCzar but West Texas would make a great Strapped. I’m biased, but I would love to see something football-based. Like Midland/Odessa on a Friday, Rawls Course on Saturday, and Ross Rogers in Amarillo on Sunday. The weekend tee times would push the budget but there’s so much extra content that would get in there.

It’s been said on other threads, mostly the Strapped themed threads, but my suggestion was to start out mid week in El Paso, play butterfield, then to lajitas for a Thursday round, then play Friday day in midland at Hogan Park, and take in a game at the ‘new’ Grande Stadium.

But, like you, am partial. That’s where I know. If it’s august or early September, then they could also stop in Balmorhea to swim in the pool.

Thought Butterfield was closed?

Don’t see anything on their website about it.

Nah, it’s open and in pretty good condition. Played it last week. They were going to close it but it was bought and brought back

Apologies. Didn’t know it was bought. Glad to hear that.

why would they close it? best course in EP.

I’m not sure Lajitas fits the strapped theme. Also I would think they would catch a game at Ratliff, because you know the whole Friday Night Lights.

Agree on lajitas. I forgot how expensive it is. Ratliff is a dump these days. It was built in ‘82 (I think?) and was the first giganticon high school stadium people were awed by.

No longer. Last time I was in Odessa I drove by there and it hasn’t changed a lick for the better.

The general lee statue doesn’t align with the strapped vibe very well either.

I believe that the course was just hemorrhaging money and the when COVID hit, the city just could not maintain it any longer. It was closed for a few months until a New Mexico-based firm came in and took it over.

Big Randy does love a good college town.

That’s the point the strapped boys don’t have want to see a nice stadium that Midland oil money can build. Yes I played highschool games there way back when and it was a dump then so I’m sure it’s worse now.

I went to college in Odessa and Grande down in Midland puts Ratliff to shame.

Also the wind can make Ratliff Ranch challenging as hell. And miserable.

Played at both. Not arguing Ratliff is better than Grande, just saying for purposes of strapped and FNL connection the boys would want to go to a game at Ratliff.

I think a tourist sauce of Texas would be easier for the strapped boys to get to a game than a strapped because honestly strapped might need to come to Texas 3 or 4 times( DFW, ATX/SA, HOU, WEST TEXAS)

Despite having to drive to El Paso from Austin at least twice a year, I haven’t gotten the heart up to make the massive detour to Lajitas. I’d like to trick the entire extended family out there with promises of horseback riding and skeet shooting, but really only an excuse for me to get some golf in.

Send em to Borden County for a 6 man game on Friday. 80 yards of fun. Borden County used to be a powerhouse, but I haven’t kept track in years.

So glad Butterfield stayed open in EP. Great desert course for anyone passing through.
