A thread for the Texas folks

Dallas born and bred, played all over Texas and I’ve never heard of this course. Looks great, love the quiet scene and movement.
Some of the pics on their site remind me of the lost gem at Twin Lakes Golf Club in Canton.

Here is a more recent article from Avid Golfer…it made their “best of public” list last year and I think they put it ahead of Pine Dunes. It’s a similar distance from Dallas so might be a good Refuge event place one of these days: Course Review - Tempest Golf Club | AvidGolfer Magazine

Agree. Maybe played there 6 times (thanks NTPGA Junior Series)
One of those holes where trees and technology outgrew the hole 15 years ago and they can’t do anything about it because of the landlocked scenic casita dwelling surrounding the green. Nice backboard though.

This junior tour inspired my interest in golf course architecture. I was able to play several courses that I absolutely hated and I wanted to know why.

For all my San Antonio people:

Is the golf course at Wild Oak Ranch any good? If not, where in San Antonio do I need to play? Got a few nights at the resort with the wife and want to sneak out for a round.

Is #4 the Par 5 where 6-iron might be too much off the tee? If so, screw that hole!

Wow… I had forgotten about that hole, that thing sucks.

Yes you can only hit it like 190 off the tee with no other options. Leaves you like a cool 300 in. So dumb. Can say the same for #8. Only allows you to hit it 200 or so off the tee with no other options unless you carry it 320 and you have 260 in. Wonder what the thought process was behind the design. I’m sure not all the houses were there when it was built but those two holes just flat out stink either way.

Now I’m looking at google earth at the rest. I’ll inject some positivity. Par 3’s are solid, couple forced carries but 3/11 are cool with the elevation changes.

Overall I enjoy Brookhaven. Have a buddy that’s a member there so I’ve played all three. It’s usually packed but pace of play is good and there’s enough bite and interesting holes to keep you engaged. I really love hitting all the wedge shots on the President’s course to small/slick greens. But good god #4 on Masters is a Yuck Club nominee.

I don’t love the hole, but if you’re a reasonable wedge player, you’ll make a lot of birdies. I think it’s the only hole on the course where I’m lifetime under par.

The hole that really pisses me off is #10. Have to lay up short of a giant ravine, then have 170+ into the green. If you misjudge your layup, you don’t even have a shot into the green.

Anyway, I’m trading clubs soon, but Brookhaven is probably the best private club value in DFW. Solid courses with a lot of variety across holes, lowest fees for a private in DFW, super laid back vibe. Can get busy but even when it’s packed, you’re playing four hours or less.

You do have the option of taking driver over the corner. Only need 245-ish carry that’ll leave you with a mid-iron into the green. Challenge is OB left, water short, and water right.

That’s the only way to make eagle on that hole, but there are birdies aplenty by laying back on your tee shot.

Only need 245 carry… wish I knew.

In a few weeks I have a wedding up in Denton area. I will have time to play any suggestions on where?

Denton specifically I feel is a pretty underserved part of the plex

You’re about 40 min from Old American and Tribute in The Colony (though I’ve heard both courses, usually very well conditioned, got hammered by the freeze) and about 40 minutes from Winstar (anyone have thoughts on the course up there?)

Closer to Denton, I think the main public options are Wildhorse, Bridlewood, and Coyote Ridge, but I don’t know a thing about them.

Wildhorse is a decent track, pretty wide open and faired okay in the freeze. Sadly it’s the only public option within 30 minutes of Denton that I’d recommend.

Thoughts on Timarron in Southlake? I’ll be driving down from Tulsa for an oil and gas industry scramble there in October - am I going to enjoy the course, or just the free booze?

I have a scramble there in October as well and I’ve never played it.

Same scramble? 10/18 - DAPL?

No, October 25th
