There are lots of people in this situation. I think first of all, give it some time, the basic outline has only been out there for what, 2 or 3 weeks? Second, if you want to participate, and your hyper-local roost doesn’t have the numbers, I would also put your name on whatever your 2nd choice is to show your support for that location.
I think in year 1 they’re looking to keep things simple to give the program the best chance to get off the ground and make it the most manageable. They’re initially looking for hubs that have the most support in year 1, and once those are identified in the next month or so it’ll all become more clear which one makes the most sense for you to associate with.
And if the program gets off the ground and you have a large contingent of participants in your specific city in year 2, I’m under the impression you’d be encouraged to start your own.
I don’t think anybody expects that. If your closest roost is 3hrs away, maybe you show up for 1 or 2 “big” events at the hub, but have another couple outings in your specific location. It’s up to each individual club and captain how they want to identify the champion. Once the roosts are named for year 1, I’d expect further details to come out around that specific process.
It’s just putting more structure around the local events and providing an opportunity to play on past your region at some bigger “NIT-adjacent” championship of sorts.
We have been talking in the Roll Call Iowa thread and know we wont have enough members to make an Official roost, but decided to put a sign up for those interested.
We included a column for a nearby larger roost to play out of as well.
Can we consider removing the number of individuals needed to form a Roost?
I just really like your initial take on emulating the Little League road map is all.
I hate opinions, especially my own, but there are some great online resources for mapping of states by district, section, and division (state) that could setup everyone up for a lot of success.
For example, @cmaherw 's interest of having an Iowa roost. Is it simpler to just allow them to have one regardless of numbers? Or is it simpler to have them figure out who they have to go hangout with because they don’t have numbers?
What happens in 2 years when the Iowa division has 38 members…
I am not the ruling authority here, but if you want to operate day-to-day as an Iowa Roost, I don’t think there’s anything stopping you from doing that. However, if you want to play your way out of districts, to regionals, and nationals, you’ll have to be associated with one of the initial ~20 Roosts assigned by NLU. At least from the KC Roost (more regional name to be determined later) perspective, we support your desire to operate autonomously, and would enable you to accumulate season points without ever leaving the state. You don’t even have to compete against other KC Roosters, it could be against other IA inhabitants who have declared their allegiance with Chicago or Minneapolis. So long as the conditions of competition are met, I don’t see any reason that can’t work.
We would also support your endeavors to establish your own Roost. In the event you don’t find the 20 required Nest members to establish your own roost in year 1, I believe providing your prospective Roosters a pathway from IA onto the national stage gives you the best chance of achieving your independence.
That was my thoughts exactly when starting one for Iowa. Knowing we wont have the numbers this year, or maybe even in the next couple of years, I figured it was at least worthwhile for us to try and get the conversation started, and if anything, get together with some of the more local members.
I included a column on our sign up for each person to designate which of the larger Roosts (likely to end up changing once official) they would ultimately belong to.
Really I’m just hoping to get more folks in Iowa together to play golf. If it grows enough in the future, great. If not, we can be a group of misfit roosters all belonging to other roosts that make the most sense for each person geographically.
Maybe I am way off on that idea? If so, I have no problem getting rid of the Iowa Roost and simply joining whichever larger roost makes the most sense.
no I think you’ve got it all right. But regarding the 20 roost limitation, and 20 nest member minimum……Think of it from the NLU perspective…how many “captains” do they really have the bandwidth to meet with and provide assistance to?
Yeah I hear ya. I probably didn’t explain it fully. I don’t anticipate the Iowa Roost to be fully involved with everything or even really need a captain at this point. For sure no expectation to be involved with the Monthly meetings or whatever was all involved of the initial 20 Roosts.
We will tag along with the larger ones, while doing our own thing and hopefully growing the participation locally.
Also not from Iowa everyone… just using their efforts as example. Best of luck against us Nor Cal folks. We got some heavy hitters out here! @GremlinGolfer
Before I reach out to the course myself for a Chicago event…NLU brass doesn’t have anything planned for 2022 at Ravisloe CC by chance do they? I know it was part of the 2020 plans before the pandemic. Just wanted to be sure, thanks!
Event schedules for 2022 are rolling out even in locations where the “season” doesn’t begin until April. In the outline it mentions that NLU will assist with scheduling, securing sites, etc. Maybe I’m jumping the gun and have too much of a desire to get things under control and planned out. I keep wanting to try and get a schedule together, target courses, etc…I guess it would just be helpful to get the club breakouts assigned and get some preliminary direction. Fully understanding this is all new and will be ever evolving.
