Wild World of Golf - Hickories @ Colonial

The benefit with playing hickories is that if you break them, you can use them to smoke a brisket

Watching the guys try to chip with the niblick makes you realize that hickory golf is definitely more of a ground game than modern golf. The niblick is probably the hardest club in the bag, especially if you’re using vintage clubs because it’s rare to find a niblick with a flange or much bounce. So the mashie niblick, which is closer to a 9-iron or a PW is a safer play around the greens.

As if in response to my earlier comment but obviously a coincidence that I’m sure was planned, this was shouted out on the NLU instagram a little earlier today. It served as that added context on Hickories / Louisville Golf we didn’t get in the video, which in retrospect may have been left out to direct us to later to let the video be about the play. Either way, it’s an informative, short watch that addressed some of my thoughts if anyone’s interested.

I played with @MerchCzar the day after they shot this and he was fucking clinical. Shot a 76 net 70 hitting damn near every fairway and green utilizing the second serve fade off the tee. We also quickly learned you wanted to be in the bunkers with the niblicks as it was so hard to chip with it.

I don’t know if it’s a hot take but I’d rather not have someone doing the “studio” announcing. Just Big Randall doing his on course schtick.

Just ice cold from DJ in the post round interview.

Probably my favorite WWOG so far. Good competitive fun from the trio who know it’s about putting on a good show while Randy at his absolute best. Guests are awesome to watch but NLU only just works.

I definitely had the thought afterwards that it worked quite well with just Randy.

I enjoy the faux booth broadcast as well, but it does seem like the type of thing that adds a lot of additional time and effort producing and editing?

Anyone know what kind of bags the boys were using out there?

I am definitely watching this again today. I agree…I like it when they bring in other people, but the boys digging on each other was fun to watch. There were so many perfectly timed one liners and you could tell @Randy was excited to be back in his element. I am wondering how long he sticks in Denver given that.

This is my guess since it was a Louisville event

Yeah these were the bags. They held roughly 6 balls and 4 tees, so I was pretty impressed with myself that I managed to make it through 18 holes and still had a couple balls left.

Edit: I want to add, I don’t normally lose that many balls during a round but it was pouring rain for most of the day and that persimmon driver got away from me a couple of times.

This scene as Neil is continuing to chirp from the cart off camera is gold.

take: Soly’s schtick as the pro-golfer imitator / alpha / front-runner role is my least favorite bit in this here NLU universe. Makes his role in WWOG borderline unenjoyable to me.

Is it a bit, though? He’s the best golfer of the bunch.

If this is going over my head, though, it wouldn’t be the first time this hour on the Refuge, most likely.

I enjoyed the video. I enjoyed that @soly lost… not because I dislike him in the least, just because he’d won enough in a row it was time for something new to happen.

he is the best, but I think he lays it on extra-extra-extra thick for the purposes of the videos and to me it’s intended as this impression.

Nearly always the front-runner; rarely an alpha. I can recall far more instances of him self-depricatingly and self-prophetically saying he’s not that tough. That said, he’s better than me and I’d be intimidated to play him.

Soly rn
