Wild World of Golf - Hickories @ Colonial

Ridiculously good episode, a content bonanza with one liners all over the shop, “Hickarito” raised a genuine LOL from me.

Well played again fellas, @Randy, @MerchCzar, @djpie.

Live look at @Soly giphy

After a rough couple videos for @djpie’s course management/thought process, was good to see him simplify things, let the others overthink themselves and collect the paper.

I love seeing hickory golf content on YouTube, and this WWOG episode was no different. Thank you to the NLU guys for putting this one together for us. I’d like to see more vintage club content. Maybe a steel-shafted persimmons and blades WWOG at some point???

Hickories are definitely a cool aesthetic and, though making the game even more difficult than it already is, offer an opportunity to connect with the generations of golfers that came before us and how the game looked and felt to them. I would think a far greater percentage of total golfers all-time played a game much more like hickory golf than what the modern game is.

I was a little disappointed by the President of Louisville golf. Seemed like a perfectly fine, normal guy, but I feel he missed an opportunity to sell the hickory experience to us, the NLU fanbase. There’s a lot of romanticism to it, not only in how you play the game with them but the stuff I mentioned before about the shared experience of golf across the many centuries it’s been played. He was pretty abrupt in his answers and didn’t really offer anything about that other than it’s about 10% less distance (which didn’t seem true based on the 2 club difference cited by the guys multiple times) and to make a strong move at the ball to get the best results.

Really enjoyed the episode as I very often do, but was surprised given the audience he was addressing there wasn’t more of an effort to talk about the why of hickories as opposed to simply the differences.

Actually, I don’t think there’s really a 2 club difference in the irons. Remember, modern iron lofts have changed pretty significantly. If you are playing the same loft in irons, there really is not much difference between hickory irons and modern irons loft-for-loft. At least this has been my experience playing hickories.

Yes, the Louisville Golf guy was not very inspiring, to say the least.

The guys are a relentless fountain of #content. Such a fun ep and totally agree we could have seen some more background on the hickories. Talk about a lost sales opportunity.

Loved the episode. Keep these coming. Looking forward to our Champ’s return to the booth.

R: Pretty straight forward bunker shot

S: Straight forward I got a fucking hickory Randy

R: Competitors are getting chippy

R: How’d that cut through the sand?

S: That was actually pretty straight forward

Ok now the “cool guys” have done it, who is buying hickories and coming NJ to play me?

I played with him at the Colonial event (which was the day after this was filmed) and that’s just how he is in general. He’s very straight to the point. The anti-EAL really. Super nice guy but definitely a very focused individual.

I’ll be honest, I wasn’t really a fan of the hickories. I loved the Persimmon driver but I just couldn’t get used to the irons and the putter really threw me off. If we got to play with them again it’d be fun but I’m not about to go buy a set. Also we broke at least 2 of them while playing. The heads just snapped off hitting a normal shot. Jeremy literally just goes “Yeah, that happens sometimes. Nothing you can do.”

Very much appreciate the insight. I definitely feel the beginnings of the Hickory bug catching but that would be a frustrating occurrence if it’s fairly regular. @MikeyTanHands , how often do you run into “breaking your bat” so to speak?

It’s not unheard of to break a shaft, but it’s usually because the iron head comes loose and the pin puts enough stress on the shaft that it causes a crack or a break. But as long as you take care of your clubs, it’s not going to happen that often.

Just what Johnny said.

I also play vintage hickories not the modern reproductions from Louisville or Tad Moore. Based on my limited googling around the first generation hickory trees are said to be stronger than the stuff being used to make shafts now. I’m guessing the trees used from the 1880-1940s were really old and strong at the time they were cut down. The trees being used now are second generation hickory and might not have the same degree of maturation.

I have zero facts to back up that statement other than remembering I read it somewhere. I have zero background in tree science and have been playing hickories for like 6months but I gotta talk like I have been an ambassador for decades :joy:.

The Whoop tracker on @MerchCzar while he was hauling ass through the driving range was hilarious. 11/10 content

The constant forgetting to bet the banker was a nice touch too. Almost like they were grinding so hard with the hickories that they forgot they were actually having to put on a show.

That always happens in Banker, and I’ve played that situation a couple different ways:

  1. If you don’t call a bet, your bet is the minimum
  2. if you don’t call a bet, it’s the maximum

Depending on if you are up or down, I’m not sure what’s worse!

That recovery shot was blackout good, @MerchCzar!

I’m absolutely not saying I would remember, it just made me smile watching it. You could tell it was genuine. I can also appreciate being in the process too. I mean, the kids looked like they were vibing out there.
