Has anyone else had weird results of days being way too high? I somehow registered a 17 activity yesterday while I was sitting around and today I’m at 7+ despite doing nothing…I had switched wrists because I noticed I had dry skin under the band so I figured that might be something to do with it…
I go to bed early enough to get 8 hours.
I mean I understand the concept of going to bed early. It’s staying asleep that long. Regardless the time I go to bed I’ll wake up after about 6-7 hours.
Does the app let you know when your Whoop’s battery is below a certain level, or does it just let it die? Can you tell it to alert you?
The app does tell you. Not sure if there is an alert (ie, text me or send email) type of function though.
I just mean an app alert, on your phone.
Ah, interesting. I feel like 99% of the time it is people just staying up late, not waking up early so apologies for making that assumption.
Do you have blackout curtains in your room? That may help. Or maybe a sound machine/app.
On iPhone you get a push notification at 20% and 10%
Ah thank you. I haven’t ever gotten that low.
I don’t but here in the PNW at this time it’s dark at 430 so it’s not light. I’ve just never been one that can sleep long, as long as I can remember I was always up early regardless of when I went to bed. If I go to bed at 9 I’m up at 3-4. And so it’s something that I haven’t been able to figure out.
Is DJ wearing his Whoop today? Bicep band maybe? Would be interesting to see his heart rate data for today.
Overall still really enjoy the Whoop but will say I’m growing increasingly frustrated with what I consider to be inconsistent Strain measurements. If I listen to Whoop, the only exercising that is worthwhile is prolonged cardio (running/biking) or golf (will get to that in a minute). I know the common response will be to get a bicep band but I’ve been unsuccessful in my attempts to have customer service hook it up and am not in love with the idea of having to remove the wrist strap and vice versa every time I exercise (don’t want to wear it on my bicep 24/7).
It’s just getting harder and harder for me to trust some my strain scores, I did a 35 min bodyweight/KB circuit this morning that absolutely kicked my ass and only registered a 5 strain yet I can hit balls on the range for 40 mins, never feel very taxed physically and get a 9. I rode 18 on Saturday, could not have been a more leisurely round of golf and registered a 14, did a 45 min HIIT run (mixing sprints/walking/jogging) and struggle to crack 10.
I’m well aware that the formula is the longer your HR is elevated, the higher your strain, but I just often feel like my perception of how hard a workout was doesn’t align with what the Whoop thinks.
Maybe I just need to stop being cheap and buy a bicep band!
I agree with this and am having the same issues. I can do an hour+ run that gasses me and it records perhaps 12-13. Customer service suggested I move the strap up a couple of inches on my wrist but that hasn’t helped.
How are your other stats trending over time?
HRV increasing? RHR decreasing?
I have the same complaints as you…and I will add that getting a bicep band has only fixed the golf problem. When I golf with a bicep band, even when I walk 18, it won’t even recognize it as an activity. Basically Golf doesn’t increase my heart rate enough to register. AT ALL. I have no increased strain from golfing when I wear a bicep band. If on wrist, it will give me a strain in the 14 range for walking 18.
My numbers are the same for wrist and bicep when I actually work out. Long runs are high on both wrist and bicep. Circuit workouts with breaks in between are still lower on both wrist and bicep.
But the bicep has fixed the golf problem.
Customer service asked me to move it up as well, even asked for pics to confirm and they said it’s in the right spot.
This is something I’m very aware of, my stats have been really improving over the last month or so as I’ve been much more on top of my diet and exercise. It makes sense that as you improve your fitness level, it’s harder and harder to build strain as it takes more to increase your HR. The issue is still with things like golf, I won’t break a sweat and the whoop records a higher strain score than a workout where I am gassed the entire time.
I’ve read things from Whoop saying that if you’re strength workouts are earlier in the day that you’ll “strain harder” throughout the day too. They also admit it’s not really geared for strength and not much out there is that I’ve seen. More about taking a more macro level view of that I think rather than grinding for the coach.
The circuit vs running is one I find interesting. Obviously the folks at Whoop understand the science of everything way more than I do but the Whoop makes me feel like if I’m not running or biking I’m almost wasting my time with some other forms of exercise. That’s obviously hyperbole, but just frustrated with some of it.
I agree that it doesn’t always make sense. On a lot of things.
But I have heard on podcasts/read articles that cardio is always going to give you a higher strain. And it makes sense, cardio gets your heart racing for longer periods of time. and since this is just a heart monitor, that is all they have real data on.
But on podcast they always follow up to say that even though Whoop is just looking at your heart, that there are plenty of things that you can be doing to increase overall health that the whoop won’t be able to analyze well. Strength training being one of them. Amongst others.
And I get all of that, I’m fine with a lot of the limitations and overall still very happy. I use it more as an accountability device than anything else right now. The golf thing I just can’t get over ha, especially given how much marketing they do with the tour and it’s top athletes. I almost feel guilty at the strain scores I post from golf when I know at this point that the Whoop on your wrist while golfing is basically a waste of time.
