As a poor sleeper, it’s worth it to me even just getting to see what helps get more time in bed/asleep in bed, even if that doesn’t translate to the recovery. I dunno whether I’ll keep it after my subscription runs out, but for now I like it.
Yea the key, for me, is to use the journal.
I’ve found melatonin is like a cheat code for sleep and recovery, like +15%. CBD is pretty good too.
Just ordered my first whoop, excited to try it out and see what I think.
I currently use a FitBit, but what it provides is fairly limited, and not always accurate. I caddied in US Open Sectionals earlier this year (36 holes in a day) and it said I had around 15,000 steps and maybe an hour and a half of exercise, obviously not right.
Is there anything I should know of before it gets here?
Use the journal (morning after sleeping).
Takes about a month to calibrate.
Don’t get hung up on the colors. Red is bad night usually a light workout should follow, yellow is “normal”, green is elevated recovery, go hard at the gym.
Wear the strap correctly (YouTube it).
Some people get incorrect measurements with golf, (I do not but I wear my strap tight) bicep band will fix that.
Sounds good! Thank you for your help!
Of course I think I’ve lost my battery pack, does anyone have any promo codes or anything like that? I feel like I just missed out on the “Buy 2, Get 1” deal on bands too, but just thought I’d throw it out there. Thanks in advance!
My whoop came in today! Shipped crazy fast.
So set it all up, I won’t be able to do anything with it for the first 4 days?
Just do your normal day-to-day routine. Workout like you normally would. It will create a baseline data set and then will begin to give you more accurate recoveries as it gets more data.
So I am through the 4-day calibration period. Going through the app and still trying to familiarize myself.
I have been using the journal, and inputting walks with the dog, golf, gym, all that stuff.
What are the main things I should be using with it and main data points I should be paying attention to?
Will take about 30 days for true calibration. As far as journal; enter what you do usually, check for new categories.
As far as your personal metrics - RHR is a great one, HRV is kinda all over (by nature of what it is).
Weekly you’ll get summaries. Same with monthly
Cool, thank you! I think I’m just confused by the data it provides, coming from a FitBit that is just steps, miles walked, calories, things like that.
I’ve read some articles and whatnot, but I need to familiarize myself more with Strain and whatnot
Yeah; whoop looks at the information differently. Compared to Fitbit, walking 10k steps is different than running 10k steps. So they don’t do much with step counting.
There’s a few podcast on how strain does its thing. It’s not linear. So going from 0-4 is not the same as 4-8.
Strain starts with 15 min of elevated rate heart. Auto detect works great.
Yeah, I found with playing golf and working out it is great at picking it up. I’ve had to manually input some walks with my dog, but they’re never longer than 30-45 minutes, mainly because he’s old
Yeah depending your tour reading with golf you may need a bicep band. For example walking it sometimes detects for me. Other times it doesn’t.
Cart usually never does.
Other have issues of getting 18 strain while walking.
Tour de France riders get 18 strain on “soft rides”. So yea.
I will say its interesting to go through the recovery score numbers/data. I think I threw my whoop off during the first 4 days, because I stayed up until midnight or later every day, got up to watch The Open, and then in a wedding drinking all day Saturday. Since then Sunday into Monday was a 93% and last night was a 94%. I’m excited to see how that averages out over time
Anyone want 2 whoop batteries? I didn’t renew my subscription this year and I have them just sitting here. Let’s call it 25$ and I’ll cover the shipping.
I’ll take them
Are there any Whoop-like products that aren’t watches? I wear an analog watch, so I’m not trying to look like an old school cartoon criminal with watches all over the place. I’ve had some issues over the last month or so that have me questioning the accuracy of the Whoop. I’ve gone through all the customer service hoops (“Is your strap fitted properly? Could you provide some pictures of its placement?”) but something still seems off with the data. I’ve gotten massive strain scores from doing almost nothing, and, for the first time, the Whoop seems off when I golf. I’m just about ready to jump ship, but I’d like to see if anyone has any suggestions on non-watch replacements before I do.
A friend of mine dumped his Whoop for an Oura Ring and swears by it. You have to be comfortable wearing a ring, but apparently the sleep data is fantastic. It’s also a one-time payment vs subscription, which some people prefer.
