I for sure get more strain walking the same course as @marklemcd whose heart beats so slowly it’s possible he’s in a permanent state of hibernation. But 17-20 strain would be hard to envision. I’ve had a 17+ Strain once - and it was a 90 minute bike ride on the Peloton. I rode 18 holes yesterday and registered an 11 strain. For sure not real.
I am no where near @marklemcd level but I would be in the category of in shape low heartbeat etc etc.
Golf only gets me about 6 strain walking which I think is about right. Heartbeat never really gets elevated. And if it ever does, you are taking breaks that get it back down. Not a sustained elevated heart rate.
11-14 for 20-30 minutes jogging is insane. I assume that’s on your wrist?
When i run 10 miles at 7:30 pace with a bicep band my heart rate will match my chest strap and i’ll be a 13-14 strain. When it’s on my wrist it’ll be 20.
There’s a reason whoop recommends the bicep strap or arm sleeve. They know the wrist is bullshit
It matches pretty close to the HR and Cal counts on the Polar chest strap…
Y’all gotta remember I’m toting extra weight and not an athlete.
I think the fact that y’all are expecting apples to apples across a wide set of people with a wide range of traits and conditions and baselines is what’s wrong.
Running 10 miles would kill me. I’d literally not be able to walk. A 5k makes my legs numb.
Edit: one factor I wonder about is that generally my blood pressure runs higher than normal. Wonder how these values play into it.
That’s crazy. So I’m semi-athletic and running 5ks, depending on heat/pace, puts me around 10-13. 10ks are 15-17.
But I’m still a THICC boy.
But mine matches Apple Watch on other wrist and Wahoo chest strap. So I think my whoop wrist is pretty spot on. (Maybe 5-10% difference) close enough for me.
Does it have to do with exertion in comparison to your RHR? People with lower HRV and higher RHR will have a higher strain in comparison to better athletes?
I’m not in great shape by any means so, after 4+ hrs walking, pushing, etc getting a strain that high seems possible.
Strain is based off your max and what % of max you’re at for how long.
According to whoop, and activity with an 18 is like going all out.
A relevant whoop quote from their page on strain:
“ For example, if you walked casually throughout the day, your Strain score would probably stay low, because even though you were active, your heart rate (and therefore cardiovascular load) did not elevate.”
Now maybe golf is a little more taxing than casual, especially in hot conditions, but all the 15+s are definitely fluffers according to whoop.
Yeah not really sure what to say or think in regards to that. Been wearing my whoop since November and things feel pretty representative of my feelings/status in real time. I only ever use bicep band for swimming and when comparing to when I have swam w the wrist strap seems pretty “on par”.
Fluff or not I think that the overall message for ME is that walking 36 in shit weather has thus far been my most strain filled day. Especially when comparing to golf averages and strain levels.
