Where did you play this week? (Part 2)

Little quick weekend trip with the wife this past weekend. 1st stop was the Charleston Muni. As everyone knows the greens out there are nuts. 1st time playing it and really enjoyed the experience.

Stop #2 was the Ocean Course today. I have been battling a bug and honestly felt like crap going in. Terrible range session, and then I go out and somehow shoot a 76 highlighted by a birdie on 13. Once again reminded I am not a Dye fan. I enjoyed it and am glad I played it, but don’t think I’d be sad if I never played it again. Felt the same about Harbor Towne, and Whistling Straits. They just don’t do it for me.

Canouan Estate.
Beautiful course.

Sunshine, low 40s, light skim of ice on the pond, six clubs, and the entire course to myself. Perfect day for a loop around the local executive.

Played Hawaii Prince on Saturday. Was a fantastic day. Paired with some Sazerac reps. Had full intention of taking course pics. Instead I only got these two:

Drinks were flowing (as they tend to do when you play with bourbon sales reps).

Got toasty enough that it was time to break out an old friend:

Hawaii Prince is a fun course. I wouldn’t make a special trip for it if you were on island. But it makes for a fun day.

Played Asheville Muni with @bigdessertguy yesterday and had a great time. Even got to see a large black bear when I was driving in. Thankful we didn’t see him when we were walking!

What did you think overall of that course? Seems like a very cool spot but not sure I’d want to take my clubs to that island for just one course.

True. Course is great and there is only one, but there are also great beaches and really good snorkelling.

Mountain Lake was spicy today :grimacing:

The front 9 vs back 9 is such a difference. Hole 10 is a travesty.

Loved the front 9 at this course when I played it!

Was with my wife visiting her mother in Charleston WV. With nothing to do on a Saturday, and no good public golf options in Charleston, I went over to the little county park where I played for the very first time. And I’m so glad I did.

Coonskin Park. It was redone recently and they now have what they call The Short Course. Nine holes ranging from 60 yards to 130 yards. The green complexes were modeled after classic designs. Redan, catcher’s mitt, square, dual, etc. The greens were in great shape and it was such a blast playing it.

It was a Soul of Golf thing for me.

The new tee on 10 makes it just fine. Knew about the “outrage” and the old tee looked bad. It’s perfectly acceptable now.

I was definitely a little harsh with my first post. Going from Ross pinehurst vibes to mountain golf is just a huge change up. But it’s part of its charm!

Oh it’s definitely a tale of two 9s.

Got out yesterday at Discovery Bay CC with a couple RACDG NorCal dudes, @golfrdom and @DIESELSOLDIER, two true gents. I’ve been playing amateur golf with/against Dom for 25 years so it’s really cool To see him this community now.

Disco Bay is a fun little track hard on the Delta just west of Stockton. I told Dom It had some Pete Dye vibes and reminded me a little of PGA West. Greens were mint.

We have a our Roost monthly quota competition going on and I scored 39 to my quota of 33. Looking to snag that Gregor VonCleekgainz award for best monthly quota round.

Great to have @GremlinGolfer out. No mention how he cleaned house in the money game. 2 skins and 1st place. #EasyMoney

Lots of you are aware of National Links Trust and what they’re doing with the three local DC courses (East Potomac, Langston, and Rock Creek). I moved up here right when they took over and it’s been nice to see the incremental progress they’ve made, both with the courses and with their events.

This weekend was their annual Toys Fore Tots event at East Potomac Golf Links. It was my third year playing in it, and it’s come a long way. I don’t remember much about the first year, but this year everyone got a welcome drink and breakfast burrito, and then there was grilled cheese and soup at turn, plus free bourbon and wine at different points during the round. It helps that it was spectacular December weather, but I’ve played in a lot of charity/fundraiser events and I think they do a great job.

The last two years this event has served as sort of an unofficial holiday get together for our local roost, and this year we had about 1/4 of the field. Two of our teams took first and second place (Alas, I was not on either team). I think East Potomac is a stellar muni, and the staff there does an excellent job keeping it in good shape, considering how much play it gets. They’ve done a lot of tree/brush clearing this winter and things are heading a good direction.

Overall though, the highlight is getting together with people from the group. I play golf with several of the folks in this pic regularly, but it’s nice getting together outside of formal roost competitions just to have a good time.

The winners:

And no round at EPGL is complete without a group selfie on the 16th tee, with the monument in the background. @Hovlandia, @Wholefoods, @nwjones, and myself had a wonderful day out there. 10/10.

Played up there on a work trip one time and got absolutely DEVOURED by mosquitos on the back 9. Front 9 is awesome though.

Yeah, they moved the tee box to the right on 10. It makes the tee shot much more inviting.

Now, 14 stands tall as the worst hole on the course. I want every tree on the right side cut down. Grind the stumps to dust and then salt the dirt.

Sounds about right - really only go there on the book-ends of the year for that same reason
