U.S. Open Pinehurst No. 2 Retrospective: 1999, 2005, 2014 | NLU Pod, Ep 850 (w Clips)

Well what do you know, the boys dropped a retrospective pod on a quiet Friday when I’m working from home again.

Just like I did for the Masters Deep Dives, I wanted to drop in some choice clips as referenced in the pod:

US Open 1999:

US Open 2005:

I am not searching through the entire 3rd round broadcast to find the backstopping bird

US Open 2014:

  • Honestly there are no clips worth posting here

Updated with 2005 and 2014 - there isn’t much.

Me seeing and hearing all of the 975D drivers in the 1999 videos:

Also Tiger’s Sunday shirt in 2005 was among his worst

So surreal to watch Phil’s face the entire time…it’s like he knew during aiming and setup that Payne was going to make that putt. No flinching whatsoever once the putt was officially made - that’s serial killer shit.

Love these pods, but I am never watching them to see the clips they are talking about.

Also, Yonex visor Phil was my favorite Phil.

Wonder if he thought he needed to win outright in regulation because of Amy’s impending labor.

Just got to the “AMY” from Miller. Very weird.

I never had a strong opinion of Payne one way or another. But Phil was my guy back then and the finger pointing and gum chewing was getting me pissed.

It’s a crazy juxtaposition between how goofy Payne looks in his plus fours and Hogan cap while also having the demeanor of a stone cold killer. What an all time major that one was. Hopefully this year gives us something similar.

Guy was in the zone for those final three holes. Payne has one of the best swings to watch in golf history IMO. Such rhythm. His approach into 16 was bad but he had just about the same shot on Saturday and nailed it:

And that’s a real 2i not one of the hybrids that everyone calls a 2i nowadays.

Just listened to the pod this morning and I am devouring the 99 Open on you tube just great stuff.

'95 is the first US Open I remember watching (I was 12), but the '99 US Open made me fall in love with the US Open the way that I had already fallen in love with The Masters.

I know it’s beating a dead horse at this point but the coverage was so much better. Shot after shot after shot. Someone lining up a putt? Show someone else.
