Implementing this right after taking last is a smart move. Surely we can’t place last back to back years, right?
Indeed. @KMola14 were in need of some cold beers coming off of 12 green. The shorter walk with the other groups within ~100 yards would make for some fun even if you’re out of it.
I really like starting with best ball because it’s pretty low stakes but you still get to get 9 holes of shots in before the “real golf” starts. Otherwise I like this idea a lot, something like:
9 best ball
18 holes*
9 or 18 alt shot
*we could switch from net stroke play to Quota to help with pace. Would need to think about scoring. @Waffles were you guys keeping up with the group ahead on the back nine? I know things were jammed on the front but dunno if it started moving later, and we were just taking awhile since we were hitting cups and tired. No shame in that (OK maybe a little), I know we weren’t moving very fast either.
I would like it to be known that our team actually went out in 26 in Best Ball and I really can’t think of any other reason but this scoring malfeasance that our team completely and utterly melted down on the back nine (we were in fact ahead of our playing partners and the eventual eventual champs through 9 holes in the afternoon). Surely not that this was only my third round since September. Surely not that I haven’t broken 80 in any of those rounds.
In all seriousness, what a blast on a beautiful day (finally!). Such a highlight to play with the champs and to see my man @Waffles make both a net eagle and a natural eagle both times after driving it onto an adjacent hole. Get weird with your lines, y’all!
Yep it is @Waffles: low 18 hole net (74) on the winning team, edging out his partner @Landonhitch (76). The overall low net did not come from the winning team and that’s tough luck, but exactly we drew it up. Team golf rules.
@GeneralTSo & I played there starting at 1:20 a couple Saturdays ago and barely finished in daylight. Unfortunately just the nature of the PHX muni life this time of year, especially that stretch from 5-10 with getable Par 5s, a drivable 4, and people stopping at the turn.
I don’t think we would be saving too much time with Quota vs Net since we had a max triple bogey in place, so just picking up 1 stroke earlier if needed.
Just with the overall schedule of the day, I think starting tee times at 7:30am on the 18 holer will let us finish around 12, everyone can get a nice little break and then we head over as a group to the 9 holer.
As we saw yesterday, the pro shop doesn’t really monitor the par 3 course, so if we want to do a post lunch best ball “warm up” round (bust scores still count) once everyone is ready to go, and then 2 Alt Shot rounds that shouldn’t be a problem as well.
**Overall price will likely increase a little due to playing before 12, but should only be $15-$20 more.
Last year I forgot we played on a Friday, so that might’ve helped it be a 5 hour afternoon round vs 6 haha.
Doing it on a Friday last year helped in every respect. Not as many people out on the par 3 and not quite as busy on the big course, either.
We were in the first group out and I knew were having a slow day, waiting on every tee and most second shots, but I still about had my eyes jump out of my skull when I realized the front took nearly 3 hours to finish. It was rough. It did pick up on the back, thankfully.
Yeah I’m all for keeping 18 holes of stroke play, just wanted to confirm we weren’t the rate limiting step out there.
@matthew823 yeah Friday is a good idea and moving to Saturday didn’t really pump our numbers this year. The only thing I can think of is with the Roost community growing, we might have more out of towners (shoutout @Nacho) wanting to travel here and having the competition on a Saturday might make a difference there. We’ll have to monitor that.
I will say in the original poll in the DryHeat and local Phoenix/Scottsdale threads to try and finalize the event date, the 2 Saturdays were overwhelmingly preferred over the 2 Friday dates. Which makes sense due to being able to save an extra day off work.
We could also do it in July. That would help pace of play.
(/s sort of)
On a more realistic note, even just moving back to April could help. Spring Training is over by then so it may weed out some of the crowd. May not help a ton but March is by far the busiest month of the year.
Are we in the Nest? The pace and waiting on the 18 hole course didn’t really bother me all that much. It’s obvi not ideal but I was okay killing time. If we can move the 9 hole loops to the afternoon when it’s less busy over there, I would be fine staying in busy season.
I had two comfy doubles and two comfy triples, three of those were from position A in the middle of the fairway. Safe to say I was probably last in the field strokes gained approach.
Thank you everyone for coming out last weekend! I think we can say that the inaugural Tumbleweed Two Ball was an undeniable success. We crowned two deserving champions: @Waffles and @Landonhitch played their tails off to get the win; Trevor parlayed the team win and net 74 to secure his spot in the 2023 Nest Invitational Tournament. Special thanks to @KMola14 for organizing the event; @wiz for making an absolutely sick trophy; and @Nacho for coming all the way from Michigan to tee it up with us. We raised somewhere around $400 for Youth on Course and $100 for Animal Humane New Mexico.
It was a little hard to tell due to our awesome format, but the competition was very close down the stretch. There was a three way tie after 13 holes! Trevor and Landon ultimately buckled down for a comfy 4 shot win. @ComfyDouble and @GeneralTSo fell off the podium on the 18th hole (sorry).
Having never played Aguila before, I have to say that the place simply fuqs. I’m a big “sure the course is good, but is it actually fun to play?” guy, and Aguila’s answer is a resounding YES. Combined with a good short course, you couldn’t really ask for a better venue for our signature event without paying 2-3+X more. We have a solid muni scene here in Albuquerque, and Aguila stands clearly above. You guys have a special thing going there. Our mascot(s) paying several visits was confirmation and I will hear no arguments to the contrary.
