TrapDraw: Houston

No lie, I can’t eat Krispy Kreme.

My favorite donuts are from Buskin in Cincy. Proper-ass donuts.

We also did COVID tests the week prior to departing for Houston, so tests on the front-end and once on the ground.

I’m sold on HEB, just don’t think we had the full experience. The frozen foods should be in the middle of the store, the deli should be when you walk in.

If Krispy Kreme was named Crispy Cream Randy would be all about it.

This was disappointing.

NO APOLOGY. See the video I posted of Randy yesterday.

I can’t find the article anymore but HEB legit took inspiration from IKEA when they redesigned the stores to their current layouts. It’s a maze on purpose!

I can’t think of a single grocery store I’ve been to that didn’t have bakery and produce when you walk in the door (Publix included). Your comment about it being in the back of a Publix actually shook me a bit. I’ll need to find one with that kind of layout.

Kolach may have been right according to Google a long time ago in central Europe. In Texas, it is Kolache. The people of West, TX know better than anyone.

The Sprouts and Fresh Thyme stores I’ve been to both have roughly this layout.

That seems so strange to me. I’ve never been in a grocery store that didn’t have produce right up front.

HEB owns, both from the product they put in the stores and how much they help our community. If a hurricane knocks out the power city wide, the HEBs will have water trucks and power stations setup within an hour.

Shout out @Randy

Damn Randy, how much money did you slip under the door?

Name it, claim it. Can I get an “amen?”

They just prayed hard and prospered accordingly

Have spent a lot of time in Houston on business. El Tiempo is legit. I haven’t been there since February because of the Vid but will be my first stop next time I’m in town.

We went to an amazing restaurant in Montrose called UB Preserv. Incredible experience that Tron would appreciate. Big Randy…not so much.

The people there tell me that Houston is a great place to live but not a good place to visit. Well paying jobs, nice communities but not a lot for tourism.

Killen’s STQ is also a great steakhouse that’s an offshoot of Killen’s BBQ. Pinkerton’s was really good also.

UB Preserve is an offshoot of Underbelly, which was Chef Chris Shepard’s (James Beard award winner) spot. When he closed Underbelly, he opened UB Preserve and also signed a 5 year lease on another spot that he called One Fifth. Every year, One Fifth would be a different concept. One year it was Mediterranean, then Italian, etc. I think they just finished their lease and he’s going to make One Fifth permanent. I don’t know if he ended on Southern Comfort and is going to stick with that or what, but his food is amazing and I’ve had several friends that have worked in his kitchen that say he’s a great boss.

When Tron comes back someone needs to take him to Himalaya.

I have two HEB’s within two miles of my house.

One has frozen food in the middle. The other has it on the very far left side if you enter from the produce entrance…which is the correct entrance.

The other entrance…the Pharmacy Entrance…is only used when you need pharmacy or cleaning supplies.

I’ve lived in 9 states…HEB blows every other grocery store out of the equation. Also…Trader Joe’s has a proper grocery store layout. Flamethrower take…Hy-Vee has the worst layout.

I have a brand new HEB right across the street that has a wine selection that rivals Spec’s. Probably gonna go grab some southwestern tortillas for carne asada tacos tomorrow.

when it’s hatch chile season…the tortillas at Central Market RULE.

I could find them at the HeB’s in San Antonio but never anywhere else. which sucks.

Himalaya is the GOAT - at least when I use to go. Great call here.

Also good to note that Chris Shepherd had some to go items at H-E-B too… great collaboration.

I would do unspeakable things for a HEB in Dallas. I can’t do Central Market week in, week out for normal grocery shopping. Love Himalaya, always a treat.
