In the middle of this pod now. One of my favorites in recent history.
@ChickPhilA so far having a lot of fun listening, kudos.
I was born at Passaic General and spent my first 10yrs on Earth in West Caldwell.
Or not enough!
@ChickPhilA great job! Could’ve done with a shoutout to Cape May and/or Cowtown but you described the south Jersey vibe perfectly.
There’s literally TOO MUCH jersey for one pod!
Those are bad things. I think focusing so much of your hate towards Columbus may be misguided and you could sprinkle it around some more, say, to any other town that also has a perennially competitive ($$$$) amateur ball sports team.
Been trying to get out to Diggerland XL for a hot minute
I legit am so excited to take my nephew there next spring/summer!!
Potential topic areas:
- Action Park, man I wanted to go there so bad as a kid seeing commercials for it
- Jersey Shark Attacks in 1916, including one in a creek in Matawan
- The real Nucky in Atlantic City, or just the interesting history of AC in general
- The View Askewniverse and suburban teenage culture of the 80s and 90s.
I loved that movie. Natalie Portman forever.
Grew up very close to Action Park. Man, that place was a wild, absolute free for all. A lot of memories as a kid there.
AC and it’s history is a really fascinating story. I got digging into the history of the place a while
Back.
I love living in NC, but damn I miss New Jersey so sometimes.
The freaking Sopranos.
Jersey Diner culture.
WEIRD NJ - like the fact that we actually have a magazine about weird things in NJ.
Cowtown rodeo.
I totally forgot to mention The Bouncing Souls!
Mack’s / Mack & Manco/ manco & manco pizza
The list is ever growing!
I haven’t had Mack & Manco pizza in about ten years, but I can’t say that I’ve had anything better since. Need some of that and Shriver’s fudge back in my life.
I’ve listened and my official review is @ChickPhilA you did great!!
It’s a perfect jumping off point for the hopefully coming Trap Draw 14 part series on NJ.
Weird NJ is incredible
Also very much on #TeamTaylorHam
Excellent pod @ChickPhilA , made me extremely nostalgic about my home state.
Awesome work @ChickPhilA loved my time in New Jersey! Was pumped when the Punk Rock Flea Market got a shoutout, that’s a great time! Shop-Rite is a dump, not a fan. No mention of Phish in New Jersey overrated/underrated? @Randy You would be a big Princeton fan. Lots of great walking, coffee, bookstores and the Princeton Record Exchange is the best!
Moved out of NYC in 2018 out to Essex County. I can verify that the public golf scene in Essex County is a full on bloodsport. It’s a fulltime job trying to get a tee time and then the 5.5 hour round awaits. As a new father I felt like I was going to have to go “private” or give up playing golf altogether. Went private at the end of August. Having a bit of an identity crisis, as I never saw myself as a private golf guy, but I have to admit it is a game changer.
@ChickPhilA - You absolutely killed it, but you kinda left out Monmouth County. Which, to be fair, could be a pod of its own.
Not in Little Silver. It’s pork roll. Eaten with egg and cheese on a hard roll. From Danny’s (RIP).
Survived it a couple of times in high school, but I had no idea what was going on there until I watched the HBO documentary. One of my wife’s friends worked there and corroborates the stories about the parties.
Watching Chasing Amy after I moved to VA and seeing Jack’s Music Shop on the wrong side of Broad Street really messed me up.
So good, so good. My mom’s side of the family is from Egg Harbor / Ocean City.
Can’t namecheck Jersey bands and forget about Dramarama:
And you can’t talk about Weird NJ and not mention Bud’s Grave:
https://weirdnj.com/stories/buds-grave/
Even after we were old enough to drink (legally), if we went to Dr. Gimpy’s in Highlands, we’d wind up at Bud’s Grave.
Also, the fountain Sprite at Hominy Hill golf course was always really, really good. We’d get excited to play high school tournaments there just for the Sprite.
The Green Parrot and the Fastlane. Someone broke into my car at the Fastlane, pulled at my back seat and almost got my clubs out of the trunk. Luckily they were unsuccessful.
WHTG 106.3 out of Eatontown and Monmouth College’s station (when I could pull it in) got me through high school. Remember the young Matt Pinfield?
I ejected out of the state in the late 80’s to take advantage of NJ’s other state university system (Virginia), but it’s fun to reminisce.
As I said, NJ needs many pods!!
Funny thing re: dramarama- when I worked at KROQ in LA they played Anything Anything LITERALLY every day. In 1998. I almost more associate them with LA than jersey (but really they are one of @MrChickPhilA ‘s favorites).
I think you have a few years on me, so I def wasn’t hanging around in NJ (other than OC, wildwood and cape may) in the 80s so I missed young Pinfield on the radio, but am quite familiar with him from being a religious 120 Minutes watcher.
And if NJ movies would have come up, I would have had talked about Monmouth county and the view askewniverse for a long time. Ha ha ha.
