Trap Draw: "The Bear" Perfect Club

After we talked about HIMYM in TV club I ended up doing a re-watch. Forgot how much of a dive it took in the last two season…truly bad

Watching the Christmas dinner on The Bear made me very uncomfortable.

A few of us read it when I was still working in hospitality. I decided to get out when management thought it was all fluff and not really useful.

Just got through the season 2 pod. I just wanted to say I loved the part of the walk-in situation that was that not only as @KVV said, Carmy having put everyone in a position to succeed without him, but the fact that he seemed to me unable to even consider that they could do it without him. Wholly unaware of his influence on others which he unknowingly imparted very thoughtfully with everyone individually throughout both seasons.

Also, after the first appearance of “every second counts” there are so, so many clocks in so, so many shots. I also, think when Carm is in the kitchen at his apartment with Claire there is thyme hanging above the sink which I took as part of the whole “time” theme as well.

Totally possible this was all mentioned before, so my apologies if so.

They came out pretty well!

Just getting through the pod. My Claire/fridge thought was knowing who each other are and been through, real life - she probably knows blowups/passion are a part of him and takes the bad day and it is not the end, remove a cliffhanger.

I think when most/all the cameos hit it out of the park like they do in Fishes it is absolutely not a problem.

I think a lot of the issue I had with the Claire character is there wasn’t much development of her story outside of who she is in relation to carmie. Like @djpie said on the pod what is the most eligible person on earth doing just waiting around for carmie to come back to his old neighborhood

The Claire and Carmy relationship and the fridge scene hit me super hard, and I was surprised to hear that all the boys and my soon to be wife didn’t think it worked as well. I agree her character could have been a bit deeper, but I also think the MPDG label that has been thrown around is selling her a bit short. There is something frustrating about seeing someone with a ton of trauma repeatedly push away someone who cares about them. Even though it is still somewhat surface level, Claire seems cool as hell and I just felt absolutely heartbroken for her.

Just leaving this here for all the non-believers -

Being locked in a freezer could be catastrophic. I think Carmy’s was a fridge…

I think the point is that they generally have the same mechanisms to lock them, that are still supposed to allow you to get out from the inside

Yes, I got you and that is an excellent point. For god’s sake let people get out of there! I think I was struggling during the episode because I thought it was a freezer and I was wondering why he wasn’t dying. So seeing this article about what this poor woman went through made me clarify it for myself.

On another topic, with these two strikes going on we might not see season three for two years.

In Copenhagen right now and thought this might be of interest to this thread.

Ran into the boat used in episode 4 when Marcus goes to Denmark while on a canal tour

Very late to S2, was finally able to watch last couple of weeks. Really enjoyed it. Willing to set aside the same over-the-top acting nit as S1. Just need everyone to dial it back about 7-9%. Great story and characters though.

Jamie Lee Curtis in Fishes and Oliver Platt throughout were high points. Loved the Alex Gonzalez story. Need a Cicero back story / focused episode in S3.

As a Chicago(land)an, the one thing I cannot suspend disbelief on: There is absolutely no fucking way they managed to get a Pequod’s deep dish in the time that table was seated.

I think Rabin’s original Manic Pixie Dream Girl critique is a smart one — Kirsten Dundst’s character in Elizabetown suuuucks, and Natalie Portman’s character in Garden State is somehow worse — but the MPDG label has become a twee shorthand for people when it comes to picking apart female characters with male love interests. One thing S2 did was artfully flesh out every character’s backstory that we met in S1. I feel like I’m willing to let Claire have that chance in S3.

Someone in the reddit fine dining thread went to the restaurant from “Forks” (the place Richie worked).
