I was delighted to hear a cover of “Throw your Arms Around Me” by Hunters and Collectors at the end of “Bolognese”. It’s such a beautiful song. Eddie Vedder may have been doing the cover, not sure.
I also heard Crowded House during the (insane) Fishes - I think it was “Something so Strong”. Also, AC/DC.
There must be some sneaky Australian or New Zealander in the production team.
[edit: it was an Eddie V and Neil Finn cover (both having covered the song separately over the years) they recorded the version used in the Bear for a Hunters and Collectors tribute album called “Crucible” released in 2013. Tbh, they should have used the original by H&C which is better than any of the covers.]
Really enjoyed it, guys. Richie’s redemption in Forks was awesome, but your call-backs to the Fishes moments and one-liners puts that over the top for best S2 episode for me. I’ve seen some of the criticism about having so many cameos in it. But I think it worked, and as you guys noted- the acting was fantastic. Odenkirk nailed it for me.
Great pod. I agree that the last scene with Donna felt a little off - she reminds me of my MIL who, given any opportunity, would create a scene at any family event where there was a positive vibe. It would have been better if Donna had tried to make it all about her but left the restaurant opening defeated in her efforts.
For music lovers (@djpie and @KVV) here’s a deep dive with the show runners which may be of interest:
Interesting on the last scene from Donna. I took it differently- a Mother that is reeling from the suicide of her oldest and all the trauma she has put on her family - needed to just see the success from the outside but blames herself for everything and doesn’t want to poison her kids more than she already has.
On the fridge scene - worked for me in the sense it just shows how broken Carmie still is and has a lot more healing to do in spite of how it appears in the front of the house.
The things that stuck out to me after listening to the pod was the universal love for Forks. I had the feeling as I sat on the couch crying and feeling so full of redemption and growth that this episode would hit others like it hit me, and I’m glad it did as well for @djpie and @Soly. It’s one that sticks with me but I don’t know if I want to rewatch it. It was magic and I’m not sure how it will feel seeing the same trick twice. The ephemeral feelings and moment might live best, once. ‘I wear suits now’ is the best line I’ve seen on TV in a long long time.
I loved @KVV saying the show was about collaboration. I could not agree more! In the real world I manage a sales team and I pick a theme for the quarter. Our theme this quarter is ‘Every Second Counts’ and I made fabric embroidered keychains for all my team. Fortunately, everybody on my team loves The Bear and sees that the statement is one of how you treat life and a pursuit of anything great. Every Second TRULY does count.
I had a cool work trip a month back in Chicago, where over dinner we discussed The Bear. I loved how everybody at that table had a ‘Richie’ or a ‘Fak’ in their lives. Not too many shows seem to star people we ‘know’ and I’m confident that this has a lot to do with the shows grasp.
Also, has anybody here read Unreasonable Hospitality? I read it after seeing Richie reading it in Forks and it’s a really damn good book. The pizza scene is/was a representation of EMP and their dreamweavers (discussed in the book).
Really fun Perfect Club ep… @Soly really appreciated you bringing up “How to Make it in America” I really liked that show, alwasy thought it has been underrated and was really dissapointed when I hear dit was being cancelled. That ending was so rushed and unfair to the CRISP boys.
