Hot take: their burgers are fire too
I feel like this was in a movie semi-recentlyā¦couple of kids met at a place (at least modeled after) slab city. Canāt remember the flick.
What a trip, though. You canāt even get google street view out there, just a bunch of pictures.
IDK if this is what youāre thinking of but some of Into The Wild takes place in Slab City, especially the movie. Emile Hirsch and Kristen Stewart meet and flirt there, which isnāt in the book because it didnāt actually happen.
Definitely what I was thinking of.
Which is funny, because I hate that dumbass story.
As a Californian currently living in the midwest, T. Hillās 2 Jack in the Box tacos for 99 cents talk had me ready to book a flight back home
Edit: quick google search, turns out Iām 40 minutes from a Jack in the Boxā¦
Made me happy that Kyuss / QOTSA at least got a mention on the pod. Those bands are the first thing that come to mind when I think about the Palm Desert area.
Slab City: featuring East Jesus (temporarily closed) and West Satan.

The drive out there is pretty cool and a little eerie. Almost feels post apocalyptic driving along this massive lake with abandoned buildings. Salvation Mountain is a trip.
At one point during my high school and college years, our local Jack in the Box was offering 3 tacos for 99 cents. Went through so many of those I donāt think Iāve had one since college.
Currently visiting Palm Springs and I must say, Joshua Tree may be the most overhyped and underwhelming National Park. Iāve been to 26 of them and itās firmly around the 25-26 range for me. My wife, like many of you, Iām sure, thinks Iām a fool.
I will say, if Iām wrong, Iām open to learning why Iām wrong.
Couldnāt not laugh at the reference to Temecula as just being the bathroom stop from Palm Springs to San Diego back in the 90s. How things have changed.
Also, Del taco is where itās at, glad to see it get some love on the pod. Better version of taco bell while remaining at the same cheap price.
Iām excited for the San Diego episode (next week or I guess for the US open). I hope whoever is the guest goes into a deep dive as to why Southern California and especially San Diego has the best Mexican food in the country. California burritos reign Supreme.
I havenāt listened yet but does The Nest come up? If not, Iām out.
No. Itās still pretty good though.
Love the mentions of the Beerhunter and The Nest. Good memories and always fun when out in the desert.
The Nest not coming up on a podcast about Palm Springs that is geared towards guys in their 20s or 30s is negligence. Thatās probably over the top but I wonāt apologize for it. Iāve never even been there, just had coworkers try to force me into it.
It is a āmust experienceā during season.
@Tron name dropping Santiago Calatrava had me moister than an oyster in the car this morning.
Bummer, because the Joshua Tree bloom should be pretty good right now. Which is kind of special.
It depends on what you want out of a park, right? J Tree is to see barren, harsh land with some weird pockets of lush. Itās also an incredible rock climbing/bouldering destination.
I think another big piece is definitely what kind of landscape āstrikesā you. I love parks that really make it feel like youāre almost on another planet, and J Tree definitely delivers that.
Gotta bring a bouldering pad and/or a trad rack to get the full J-Tree experience.
And a whooooooole of that sticky icky
