As someone that is going to Portland in just over 2 weeks, I’m now even more excited about the food scene!

The restaurant discussion was unfortunately truncated. Current Portland power rankings:

  1. Fore Street
  2. Eventide
  3. Central Provisions
  4. Scales
  5. Emilitsa (closed until august)
  6. Miyake
  7. Terlingua
  8. Duckfat

Also, Hannaford is the obvious middlebrow choice for groceries. Shaws is just a NE Safeway

Much appreciated! We had actually been considering eventide. We are sorta meandering through the northeast, so we will have one night in Portland and one night in Boothbay Harbor for the Maine portion of the trip.

Eventide was great. Big miss of our trip in 2019 was only having one night in Portland. Would love to eat more and explore more next time.

Yeah, we are hitting Portland, Manchester, NH, Burlington, VT, and Boothbay Harbor, ME. We are really excited to explore the northeast and also get out of the summer humidity of southern Indiana.

Burlington, VT is awesome too. Had some work trips there, but have not explored a ton.

I loved Hen of the Wood restaurant if you are looking to do that sort of thing. Burlington also has a ton of beer and more casual eating options as well.

I think we’ll probably try and do one or two fancy dinners and one or two more low key ones. I’ll definitely look into that one and also a couple of the breweries. We are doing a cruise on the lake that night in Burlington, so probably looking for something later in the evening.

Eventide is great. We also liked the Shop by Island Creek Oysters. Nice stops as well at Austin Street Brewing, Rising Tide Brewing, and Urban Farm brewery and fermentory. Our nice dinner was at Scales, which was great. Cool stuff over by Allagash as well.

I know it’s probably set in stone, but I’d add Portsmouth, NH (even over Manchester, unless there’s family ties).

Honey Paw was the discovery from my trip a few years ago, though Eventide and Fore Street are both outstanding.

For breweries, Bissell Bros. was my favorite, but a great beer city all around. Novare Res is the place if you really want to nerd out on some lambics, plus something from all of the great locals.

Manchester is honestly the only day we don’t have a ton of plans for. Kinda just chose it due to it being on the way between Portland and Burlington. Thoughts on things to do in Manchester vs Portsmouth?

To me, Portsmouth is like a smaller version of Portland, while Manchester doesn’t really have a ton to recommend it as a tourist destination. So Portsmouth would be the call, but you are basically going there for a small port city with some good beer and decent restaurants, all of which you will get plenty of in Portland. If you really want to check NH off the list, you could switch it up a bit and take a more northerly route from Burlington to Portland, find a town on Lake Winnipesaukee (popular summer vacation spot) or even at Conway/Mt. Washington for some variety.

Novare Res is a great hang. Also love an outdoor cocktail at the Regency garden bar.

Ditto what @mcriblet said. Taking the more direct route from Portland to Burlington through northern NH would probably make the trip more interesting from a variety standpoint. There are a lot of smaller places you can stop and explore as you go.

Okay. Yeah, I appreciate the info from yourself and @mcriblet (siiiiiick name by the way). We haven’t been to the northeast other than a work trip to Boston. Am trying to hit all 3 states, so that was the idea with Manchester. May switch it up and go with Portsmouth now. We are planning on driving back from Burlington towards Portland through northern Vermont/New Hampshire for the night we stay in Boothbay Harbor. We are flying in and out of Portland, so we figured we’d stay just north of there after meandering across on the last day.

Cool, so it sounds like you will get plenty of mountains, lakes, and oceans one way or another. You will have fun and find good things to do and probably nice weather wherever you go. Sorry to be itinerary guy (no Old Head?).
