I must say, Laz, having seen you write about diet and how breakfast isn’t necessary (I think this is your take), I’m sort of shocked that you still seem to frequent fast food fairly regularly. I don’t know Charro Chicken, but on the pod you mentioned McDonalds - which might serve something that qualifies as food these days, hard to say - and I’m just sort of mutually impressed and horrified. I grab fast food on road trips but ever since my daughter aged out of Happy Meals, that’s about it. And I’m much, much less healthy overall than you are, I’m quite sure.
I love some fast food. Namely:
White Castle (cheeseburger w/ k & m)
Zantigos (mild chilitos)
I will eat a Big Mac, Filet-o-Fish, and sausage, egg, cheese McMuffin.
I will eat the original chicken sandwich at BK (with American cheese and ketchup.)
Chipotle, Yes.
Charo Chicken is grilled chicken, not processed.
Papasitos
A good Wendy’s burger is solid.
In-n-Out is fine.
Five Guys is great.
The Mexican Pizza at Taco Bell is my closet secret
It’s February 18th and I’ve been to McDonald’s like 3-4 times tis year already. I did a 4-day fast after two trips to the Golden Arches that were perhaps too close and I noticed some discomfort.
God bless you, sir. I’m in on Chipotle (except for the fact there’s way better Mexican food almost everywhere here so why go to Chipotle), In-n-Out on road trips (I won’t make excuses for their fries which are ungood) and I wish there were a Five Guys anywhere closeby so I could try it out. I’ve never been in on Taco Bell but I respect the game.
Back in college, we used to go grab Ultimate Cheeseburgers from Jack in the Box and laugh about how there were literally more than 1,000 calories in each burger. I don’t laugh about that anymore. Oy.
Also, I can’t eat KFC without paying for it immediately in ways that would unsettle this sub, so I’ll abstain in the name of decency. But damn it tastes good.
Really regret not getting to talk about Zankou. It’s really good. I had a not-so-good chicken last order, but I still ate it. The whole chicken. Zankou, started by an Armenian who had his first store in Palestine, is worth a stop. @anon47037505, always the one-upper, of course has a real Palestinan chicken joint he swears by that doesn’t involve any Armenians…
As a native I want to #getinvolved. I thought that Laz might have some thoughts on all the different Rotisserie chicken places. El Pollo Loco is fine and does have OG status but that’s about it. Zankou is delightful but will always be a bit grimey due to its history and its Hollywood upbringing. Some sleepers are Sevan Chicken in Tujunga/Glendale and in Santa Monica, Benny’s which is the most interesting because they go cross cultural with Tacos as well as the Zankou garlic sauce. Funny aside about Sevan I was a substitute teacher and a kid once told me “Sevan shits on Zankou it’s so good.”
@therealmarkymark I’m a big fan of Tender Greens. Santa Monica being Santa Monica, I have Greens Up, a hearty salad maker 1/2 block away, and also Sweet Greens 3 blocks the other way. Tender Greens is like 10 blocks away so I seldom go. Love their mashed potatoes/BBQ chicken plate.
@gwcc, por supuesto. Also, I just doubled my GWCC monthly order. I’m very much enjoying your coffee. It fits me. Thanks.
Also, also Santa Monica: You paid $1,000 in 1992? You’re paying $1,500 in 2022.
Also, also, also Santa Monica: The people who love you have lost patience, you’re mentally ill, you’re an addict. Maybe you were abused your whole life and you ran away. You are safe here. We will not treat you like an animal.
