Just started the pod, but if they don’t shout out “The Triad” in general I’m gonna be furious.
LETS GO JIM, Triad shout out! Triangle is full of uppity transplants! Appreciate the shout outs to Furniture Market and RJ Reynolds (EDIT: and textiles, my great grandparents met making socks together), staples of almost every family legacy in this part of the state.
Find a real engineer and do a full pod on the three gorges dam. On a related note, according to the New Yorker there is a dam in Iraq that is going to fail and kill hundreds of thousands of people (seriously read this article, absolute insanity):
I don’t think you can claim her as Alumni as she didn’t graduate. One of my English professors at ECU claimed she was only one credit short when she left.
This was a great pod and the stories were excellent. As a Greensboro resident I had been looking forward to this for awhile.
Highlights:
- @Randy once visiting to dunk on some Quakers
- @Tron mixing up “Triad” and “Triangle” (happens often; and, honestly, High Point should be on it’s knees in thanks for even being considered part of any combined area)
- Jim detonating Harris Teeter (I’m a recent Sprouts convert)
- Lots of love for Starmount Forest (Been a member for a few years and it’s got some REAL sneaky good history)
- Jim with the “transistor radio during ACC tournament” call. All North Carolinians know this feeling. When our teachers used to wheel in that big ass TV with the straps each spring we knew what was up.
Bravo
I have been waiting for this episode since the Metroplex. As someone who grew up there, but has since relocated, I always enjoy hearing about this great area that gets shadowed by our lesser-storied metros in the state. You couldn’t have found a better guest, huge W.
- Ricky Proehl - the legend behind Kurt Warner’s legend. Proehlific Park/NC Baseball Academy ran the monopoly on USSSA baseball.
- Although @Lang threw shade at HPeezy, I agree that growing up and basically cancelling class for a week to watch the ACC tournament is a unique experience, pretty sure if you had day tickets it was an excused absence.
- Wrangler is staying in town, but their former owner VF Corp (North Face, Vans, Jansport, etc.) announced they are heading to Denver. Big suck.
- Appreciated Jim’s entire synopsis of the Triad and golf history of the tournament, my mom is an avid reader of the O. Henry.
Also for your golf-adjacent reading pleasure: A beautiful house on the 12th hole built in 1929 was demolished by the owner of Furnitureland South after he bought it for $2.4M… Mind that Furnitureland South has a giant dresser on the front of their building.
I will be curious to see what he builds, just from what I can see currently he’s left some of the historic bits around the property like the little boat house out front, the gazebo, and the old lamps lining the driveway. Sad to see it go but sounds like it was uninhabitable. From the looks of it they have started foundation work but not gotten much further on the new house.
I mean, I hear you, but most school’s famous alums are athletes who didn’t graduate.
if you’re ever in Roanoke VA im taking you out for beers, at my Kroger.
Cuz we have a kraft beer bar
Kroger has stepped its game up boys
I’ll second the motion for an entire Jim pod. The stories just kept flowing.
To be honest, I almost skipped this pod when I heard who the guest was. Not because I don’t like Jim Dodson, I just had no idea who he was.
What a natural storyteller though, that was a fantastic listen!
Great episode, I’ve lived here now going on 8 years post school and I thought he highlighted (fantastically) what I enjoy about GSO.
The teeter at Friendly is one of the best teeters, but still I prefer the publix(es) that have infiltrated the area. However, as a NC thing, I was surprised Jim didn’t mention Lowe’s. Their local beer selection is pretty outstanding and they have it on tap now. Live music on Thursday’s (pre-covid), with people getting after it.
It also reaffirmed my want to get out at Starmount at some point.
I’m with you. Lowe’s is legit.
Born in ATL, fam moved to Greensboro when I was 2. Parents still there, it’s my hometown for sure.
Can confirm - Greensboring was the most-used name in the 90s to early aughts. Has since grown up and become a nice mid-urban town (shout out @anon29849602).
Relatedly, how tf have I been gone for ::counts on fingers:: 15 years now?
Excited for the pod. Listening currently. Will report back.
Surprised the boys havent mentioned it yet (that I’ve heard). Lowe’s has moved to the top grocer for me over Publix.
Pro tip: go get the homemade tortilla chips in the cellophane bag. For me, it’s near the bakery/take home pizzas/chicken place. Best tortilla chips you can get at a grocery.
Dodson has a few Snead stories that are NSFW…especially the one from Billy Joe Patton.
Also–Lowes Foods is heavy into South Carolina now—great store.
I’ll have to look for those next trip to the store. Are they the kind of tortilla chips good for dipping with salsa, or better with something like hummus?
I’d say they work with both. They’re basically Mexican restaurant quality chips at a grocery store. Not too thin but crispy and taste fresh.
Like @drv4show said, they’re down here now. I’m in Columbia.
I had literally zero thoughts about Greensboro, and learned a lot!
Great guest.
That place was a complete dump and was going to be a fortune to try and renovate.
