Or easy enough to find someone to do it for you. It’s only get easier to do it’s better to set precedent now. AI can do a lot of shit.
@Tron I lol’d at the monitoring of the shitshow that is Dolton, IL.
WGN News has been relentless in its coverage of these clowns. My favorite detail is the mayor’s gold microphone. Absolute menace.

Lifelong Brewers fan @djpie might need to answer for this
Kind of blowing my mind the server tipping bar isn’t closer to 100%
I think the key word is “always.”
I have left no tip before when the service has been horrendous.

……yikes
The original intent of tipping was to reward (on top* of regular pay and fees) someone going above and beyond. The fact that American culture has made some tips for average service “mandatory” kind of sucks but it’s the way we have designed minimum wage and protected companies. Ok, I get it.
But if my waiter messes up my order, pays us no attention during the meal, and is rude… why would I tip them?
There are so, so, so many factors that go into why you may have gotten poor service at any given time.
How do you know they got your order wrong and it wasn’t the cooks in the kitchen or the bartender making something wrong? Or the place being understaffed that led to the server being over worked which slowed down their responsiveness? Or maybe they hard simply having an off or bad day and deserve some empathy?
When I make a mistake at my work I don’t lose out on some of my hourly compensation. If I’m overwhelmed because my employer doesn’t have enough staff in that day I don’t lose compensation because I cannot hit my normal response time targets. If I’m having an off day customer service wise or am stressed and it’s affecting my tone, that doesn’t come out of my paycheck.
We can talk about how they have structured minimum wage as being the true problem here (I would agree) because $2.75 an hour plus non-guaranteed tips is a fucking scam. But until that’s fixed or unless you’re eating somewhere where tips are built in to your bill - I will absolutely judge you for not leaving a tip for a server at a sit down place.
All the others are a bit more up in the air and vague for me.
I mean, this is it right here. Just pay people a living wage so that the customer isn’t on the hook for supporting people through bad service/delivering a bad product/not doing their job (especially if the bad service is because the place is short staffed) or subsidizing the owner’s bottom line.
Also this is true and if my service is just slightly bad/some things go wrong, for sure I’m leaving a tip. I’m talking about if the waiter is an absolute A-hole which I think negates a lot of the extenuating circumstances you have listed (which are valid)
See, the statement below
Is a bit different from your original statement
No?
I could’ve phrased it better. I meant all three of those things together in one sitting to make a “horrendous” experience like I first mentioned.
I want to clarify that I’m not out here leaving bad tips all over town. I’ve probably left $0 tips (and wrote a note explaining it) like 3-4 times in my entire life
How much money is a server supposed to make before you feel okay about not tipping them if they are awful?
A living wage which would be dependent on where that server lives.
Our minimum wage is 8 dollars less than our living wage (17.40 vs 25.70).
Does that mean that I need to coordinate with my fellow diners to ensure that they are still tipped 8 dollars an hour if they absolutely stink?
I mean, ideally, yes. But we both know we don’t live in an ideal world and that’s never going to happen.
I’m always going to advocate for tipping, and tipping well, servers at a sit down restaurant. For various reasons.
Remember the rule folks: Thinking that tipping shouldn’t exist is not an excuse for not tipping.
Yeah I always have a rule that if I’m going to a restaurant that has a waiter and eating in I always tip 15-20%. In the end if I’m going to be a stickler about tipping then I shouldn’t be asking for service and just order carry out. I did this when I was making $10 an hour at 25 and do it now at a real salary at 31.
