Seems like the YSL trial is headed for a mistrial or at least overturned upon appeal. IANAL but the twitter consensus seems to be that the judge got way out over his skis. Just a shitshow all around.

Got some inside info from a friend that’s a former prosecutor and current defense attorney in ATL and familiar with both the judge and lawyer. He’s very much team defense regarding this particular episode.

What did the Baltimore deep faked voice thing have to do with cancel culture? Space Jam levels of reaching

wasnt the principal basically canceled because of the fake recording?

If he said a bunch of racist and/or bigoted stuff, as a school administrator, he has to lose his job. This is someone in charge of kids, not a comedian working on new material at the comedy cellar

The principal didn’t say any of those things. A pissed off athletic director created audio of the principal with AI saying racist things and spread it on social in an effort to get him fired.

I believe the point, which probably could have been better articulated, was that if we’re going to accuse someone of vile actions such as these we should be 100% sure it’s them.

I think the original point would be that this would nearly be 100% agreement that this person should be fired. And not a “cancel culture” type outrage where people are “offended” incorrectly.

Yeah, the problem there wasn’t “cancel culture”, whatever the fuck that means. I think any reasonable person would agree that a principal who was proven to have said those things cannot be trusted in his position and must be fired. The problem is the deep fakes and our ability to differentiate real from fake.

I’m aware. The school did not know it was AI when he was fired. Had he actually been the one to say this stuff, he deserved to be fired. It’s not “cancel culture” for people to be held accountable for reprehensible things, and we aren’t in a place in the world yet where anyone would immediately suspect deep fakes when a person is caught saying something awful but claims it isn’t them

But that has nothing to do with “cancel culture”. The school did the right thing. There is no reasonable expectation for them to immediately start investigating the possibility of a deep fake setup. There are going to be a lot of problems while the world figures out how to navigate this stupid AI bullshit, but I’d always rather err on the side of not letting a bad dude be in charge of anything at a school

Brother I agree with you. I said the point could have been articulated better.

Sure. This felt like a whole thought that I just think is wildly off base. Not going to shed any tears if shitty people feel the need to keep their mouths shut more often. I’d say that’s a feature, not a bug.

Sorry, I misunderstood your response earlier and I 100% agree with this.

To me it’s incredibly messed up that a gym teacher could pull this off and would have gotten away with it if it weren’t for the FBI. Who from the sounds of things are so far behind on this that they needed help from UC Berkley students. And they’re not even sure how to prosecute him. That’s a really bad state of affairs.

But that’s not the point either. It wasn’t about bad people saying less, which yes that would be nice. In this case it’s about the principal trying to hold someone accountable for doing something corrupt and being deepfaked as retailiation. Thankfully the school followed a good process and found out the truth. The principal being temporarily replaced is for sure the right call. “Cancel culture” being used here is misplaced but if we’re looking to the TrapDraw for precise language around current goings on that’s probably misguided.

I am going to need some more info on this.

I think you’re wrong here now and presumed him guilty. And now that this shit easy to game they always need be viewed that they easily could be fake.

I don’t know that I want to try to decipher what you’re attempting to say here, but I can definitely say that doing a deep fake of someone’s voice isn’t “easy”

Easy enough for a high school AD to do it.
