Michigan’s incredible golfing destinations. The genius course designs of MDV. Spirited debate over LCP vs HCP in match play. @Randy’s personal journey through the accounting and career wilderness. The soaring new heights of cinematography and production by the NLU crew. This season has been undeniably great.
And as near as I can tell, exactly one post about Goodbar’s swing. WTF, people. Are we all just trying not to talk about it because we’re afraid it might happen to us? (No offense to anyone, of course, especially Goodbar, who clearly is an all-world golf hang…)
Such a cool idea to pair this meaningful place in @Randy’s personal journey, to telling his story while featuring him in a match. Beautifully done.
It is such a blessing to find your way to a calling or a passion. I am so lucky that I found that mid undergraduate degree, but I think Randy’s experience is much more common, actually. I am glad he found it finally, and now we all get to enjoy some of the fruits of that. Lucky us.
had a chill down the occipital seeing #13, aka Arthur’s Hills, that reminded me of asian mountain golf, replace the pines with palms and youve got A LOT of Filipino golf fersure…
Let just echo others, this was incredibly special and basically everything I love about No Laying Up. And golf would be on that list but not one of the top three or five things, I think. Great job by everyone involved.
Simply a joy to watch. Though I feel like I’ve heard the origin story before on a previous pod, the splicing of @Randy’s parents was phenomenal, as others have noted. What a delightful family.
I thought the shots of the golf course captured it perfectly. The way the holes cut through the pines creates an incredibly pleasant environment. As I said above, this course is just a lot of fun. Not hard. Not woke. Not elite. Just enjoyable. If you can get the first tee time you can buzz around in 3 hours or less as a single and it will be blissfully quiet in the trees. Then you grab some Johan’s donuts and bagels on the way back into town. Hit the beach at Little Traverse Bay and soak up the spirit of Lake Michigan. Summer perfection. Here’s a picture from that beach at sunset (that’s my daughter back when she was a teenager). Incidentally, this picture was taken at about 9:45 PM. The summer days never end.
What a cool episode. A crash course in the life of the big guy was neat. Shows everyone that you can always end up where you want to be in life. Loved it!
I didn’t realize @Randy’s stint in the Boyne Pro Shop was post-grad! That’s wild. The boarding house sitch has a very Steinbeck vibe. Or maybe Hemingway, given it was Petosky.
Started following NLU around a year ago. After the first video I watched I said Randy is the guy I most want to just sit and have a beer with. This episode just further escalated that. The production value is through the roof. Well done!
I was too shook to even comment. Maybe the wildest ass golf swing I’ve seen from someone who is not a complete hack. It’s easy to make fun of but it’s a legitimately impressive athletic feat that he’s able to make consistent contact with that swing, nay flail, of his.
Side note, does anyone else cringe nearly every time they see their swing on camera? For me, it’s kind of like hearing your voice on a voicemail.
Ok, I know I may get slammed for this but last night’s episode had some cringe worthy moments for me. I would love to play a round with Randy and share a beer or 6. He seems like a great guy and I love the character he plays in the vids.
But
As a father of a young women who is getting ready to graduate college I cringed at the lack of direction or follow through that was described. Chasing happiness is important but that does not have to come at the expense of being responsible.
Maybe I am the strange one but I went to college with a definitive plan. I knew what degree I wanted and I knew the field of work I wanted to be in. I graduated, took a job in my field, got promoted after one year, moved on to a more prodigious facility a year later and have been there for 27 years.
Not trying to bash Randy. Things have obviously worked out for him and everyone takes a different road. I am just not sure I would have liked that road or that I want my daughter to take that road. Maybe I am just an old man not up to date with the times.
