Tourist Sauce Season 7: Michigan Wine and Dine

Ran into the Foreplay guys at Forest Dunes on Wednesday and Thursday. Looked like they were having a good time and if you watch the podcast you see my fat ass rolling by in a cart lol.

On one of the latest Fore Play podcasts, Riggs mentioned that Arcadia wasn’t against them filming, but they wanted them to do it all. Film both courses, stay on the grounds, eat at the restaurants and they planned everything like 2 weeks in advance and Arcadia had no room for them on the grounds. The way Riggs described it was it was all or nothing and they just couldn’t be accommodated on such short notice.

Didn’t the newsletter on 7/24 say the new season of Tourist Sauce was dropping on Monday? I assumed that meant 7/26. Did I miss a tweet/announcement about a delay?

They just started filming this week.

Ahhh, that makes sense. When they said ā€œkicks offā€ I assumed they meant airs since the next bullet was followed up by Strapped coming out in September.

A bit like last year, I’d anticipate 12 episodes released weekly that take us from October to the end of the year.

Winners shot 63-66. That’s, pretty good. Dan Ellis from MSU golf.

Yah, that’s pretty good. Actually, I’m kind of surprised their net was 4 lower than their gross. I would have guessed they would have been scratch like MSU coach Casey Lubahn and former player Randy Hutchinson were.

It’s also kind of funny they went with Tron Carter but used Randy’s real name.

Yeah, I thought the same thing. But…there’s something a little ā€œcuriousā€ about the Net scores on that board. It seems Dave/Dan would have won both Gross & Net, but did not. Dan is likely playing off a +4, not sure what % the format actually is for the Dual. I’d guess if his brother is playing off something around 0, they may get a few strokes based off the Lubahn/Hutchison team.

Yah, I can’t find an index for Hutchison but he played in 24 KFT events, 3 PGA Tour events including an US Open and won a Michigan Open. If Dan’s a +4.7 and Casey is a +3.8, he could easily be a +6.

Was just there a few weeks ago. The loop was really cool. Cant wait to see how they filmed everything.

So if I’m tracking the guys’ itinerary thus far correctly, it’s:

Detroit Golf Club
Rackham
University of Michigan GC
Pilgrims Run
Diamond Springs
The Mines
Forest Dunes (original weiskopf 18)
The Loop
Kingsley Club

Before filming, it looks like Tron managed to sneak onto Crystal Downs. I would bet that they are going up to Greywalls. What else would be on deck - Belvedere, maybe a Boyne course to get a real up north vibe? Sleeper pick for a strapped vibe would be Champion Hill. Shaping up to highlight a pretty strong set of public courses I think.

I don’t have a good sense of how far a reach into the golf mainstream that NLU/Tourist Sauce has but I’m wondering if this will elevate the reputation of Mike Devries. I have a feeling they are going to be raving about him in the series.

I love Champion Hill, my favorite course up there, and cannot wait to play it over Labor day. Maybe a split day of Champion and Pinecroft ala True Blue and Caledonia in season 5. Would be awesome to see them showcased, but there are a lot of really cool tracks in the area.

In the local WhatsApp thread people said Greywalls, Belvedere, and Wawashkamo on Mackinac. I hope they get some other local joints like pinecroft/champion hill and some random muni in the UP as well.

They were going wild for him on Instagram the other day and rightfully so. He has to be the most underrated designer out there. All his work is either ultra remote, private or in West Michigan which really isn’t a golf destination.

Big thing is if the right people watch it. Like the new owner of Forest Dunes. I know he’s looking at building a 3rd course and think he’s pretty set on either Hanse or C&C. Hopefully this changes his mind to stay local.

Agreed on Belvedere and Boyne (Highlands) so that Randy can show the crew his old stomping grounds.

Also agreed on highlighting DeVries. I think that’s where Andy Johnson and TFE will fit in for those episodes. Also supposedly they played with DeVries at Kinglsey? So would have to imagine they’ll have an interview with him.

My guess is the 3 GR DeVries courses will be one episode similar to S5E8 with Pine Needles, Mid Pines, Southern Pines.

DJ was notably absent from the podcast on Sunday night. Could easily have been just dumping tape or whatever they call it but also could have been doing an interview or two …

Would they make the drive all the way to the UP without hitting Timberstone or Sweetgrass? Certainly possible, but they may throw one of those in there as well…

Will be interested to hear their thoughts on The Mines, spent the last two weekends in GR and played it both times. The course is in the roughest condition I have seen it since first playing there about 6 years ago.
