Tourist Sauce Season 7: Michigan Wine and Dine

Did you get the crust seasoning? Gotta do that.

As a Michigan resident for 15 years this season was highly anticipated. The recap pod and episode 1 certainly didn’t disappoint. Everything that is good and special about NLU was on display in both. The word that keeps coming up to me regarding episode 1 is “soulful.” The interviews with Karen Peek and the Tango Club leader (Tammia?) elevate TS to a different plane. Highlighting people like that is truly the special sauce of the series specifically, and the NLU brand more generally. 5 white dudes playing golf and riding around in a BMW luxury van would get real boring, real fast without that soul. And while I can’t wait to see the footage of the UM MacKenzie course, Kingsley, Boyne, etc., or hear from Mike DeVries, the interviews with the “little people” in golf and in life is the type of content that keeps me coming back. It enhances my love of the game of golf more so than seeing sick photos of courses I may or may not get to play one day. This is so much deeper than Instagram golf.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: creating a culture where people spend 3+ hours listening to guys talk about their golf trip is just a remarkable accomplishment. If life is about the number and depth of connections we make then the NLU boys have got life figured out.

One final thought: Detroit pizza sucks. I get that as a novelty item it might be interesting one time, but no one should want that as their go-to pizza style. My wife has spent her whole life living in Michigan and I have to ingest this stuff regularly. Next time you guys are in Ann Arbor I’m buying you all Anthony’s Gourmet Pizza and you’ll never go to Buddy’s again.

The Head Pro at Detroit Golf Club Josh has been at some sweet clubs before getting the HP including Dorset Field Club, Ekwanok, Sankaty, and Medina. Nice to see a young buck running the place.

Met him this summer and his lead assistant Alex. He’s a great dude too, as is Alex. Treated us like gold as guests of the club. First class operation at DGC.

Blue Pan is legit. Very very good pizza.

Does anyone do well with apathetic service? I had slowness in service industry.

That recipe uses ap flour. No way. I’ve been working on this recipe for 3 years. I’ve gotten fantastic reviews from all who have tried. I’ll put this recipe up against most. Try this… You’ll thank me.

The best Detroit style pizza I’ve had is in Austin, Texas oddly enough. The place is called Via 313, it’s my favorite pizza in the world. I want some now but am sadly in NC.

Anthony’s is legit, I also like Neopapalis. Thought it was the best bang for your buck pizza in town. I think the NLU crew hits up Frita Batidos for the next episode…sooo good.

I like Via 313, it’s like “what if Pizza Hut was good?”

Came here to say this exact thing. It’s the only Detroit style pizza I’ve had but my god it was good.

I was lucky enough to play Kingsley this Summer, and two of my favorite holes where 14 and 7. Like they said on the pod the green setting for 14 is insanely good. Honestly the entire place just blew me away TBH so picking a favorite hole is very difficult. I birdied 3 (People told me going in 3 was an impossible birdie) and also birdied 15 which the caddie said is another impossible Bird so I was very proud of that. Top 2 on my list with Sand Hills. The entire vibe from the moment you drive in is just perfect! I can not wait to go back next summer hopefully for more than 18 holes.

Cannot wait for the Ann Arbor episode. It’s been a special place to live for 15 years and i have infinite affection for the place.

So now I’m gonna be “that guy” and say where they “should” have gone for the quintessential AA food experience if you’re eating just one meal, lunch in this case. I realize that anyone from any town NLU has ever traveled to can nitpick, and this is by no means meant to be negative. However, while Fritas is good it just doesn’t live in the pantheon of AA restaurants when you take into account the history and ethos of the town. in no particular order:

  1. Blimpy Burger
  2. Jerusalem Garden
  3. Zingermans
  4. Angelos
  5. Connor O’Neil’s
  6. Jolly Pumpkin
  7. Grizzly Peak
  8. Fleetwood Diner
  9. Blue Nile

You are exactly right about those restaurants having the history associated with the town.

That being said…anytime I suggest to someone a spot to check out; I say Fritas first.

Blimpy Burger in its new location, with its new employees is hardly a must-visit, let alone #1.

I agree with this, while those other restuarants have more history I’m always recommending Fritas first. I was only in Ann Arbor for 5 years, but I heavily frequented HOMES, Mani, Tomukun, Wolverine Brewery plus Kosmos, Tmaz, Dimo’s and Fleetwood for cheap / needing to sober up / hangover eats.

Ann Arbor is a sneaky good foodie town.

I respectfully disagree. I frequented the old location when I first moved here and I find the new location and food just as good. Is it a little less abrasive? Yes. But the burgers and fried food still hits right, in my opinion.

Oh, the food stinks at both. You know they don’t season their burgers, right?

In any event, if we’re being “that guy,” I get to yuck your yums, and say most of the places on your list stink (Connor O’Neill’s?!!?). Every city these days has multiple brewpubs; very few of them are must-visits. And Angelo’s is not quintessential Ann Arbor unless you’re a med-school/grad school student wanting to brunch.

You’re missing places like Cottage Inn (where the food also stinks) that are part of the fabric of Ann Arbor, as well as Broadway Cafe which has been around forever, AND has great food.

But Zingerman’s is probably the place you send someone who’s never been to A2, wants one meal, and is into food.

Not in the mood to get in an argument. To each their own. I think a Blimpy burger tastes great if you put it together right.

I didn’t pick the places I thought necessarily had the best food, though many of these places do serve a great meal. Sometimes visiting a restaurant is about going to a place that almost anyone who ever lived in a town can identify with in some way. That’s how I sometimes pick places when I travel there.

Have a great day.
