And if I recall correctly, that tee shot was my first swing after a 6 hour early morning drive to catch up with you guys. Promptly popped my drive straight up about 120 yards in front of you, @tron, and @JBors!
Golf is fun.
Some of this is true for sure. Like you said, Detroit’s lack of public transportation comes from the fact that everyone had cars and everyone had homes.
Part of the issue comes, too, from the size of Detroit – there are literally two cities within the city – then white flight with the Great Migration and then the 67 riots, and the highway system.
When they built the major highway in Detroit – I-75, they cut right through a ton of neighborhoods, and made it much easier for everyone to move out of the city and into the suburbs and still commute downtown or to the plants every day, because everyone had a car. Here’s a really good article about the highway system
When a lot of Black people moved up to the north during the Great Migration, there was still a lot of racism in Detroit and people started moving north and into the suburbs, which left a lot of the neighborhoods with vacant houses. The city had nearly 2 million people at one point in the 1950s, and it just continued to fall off.
As a Michigander living in South Carolina (with no Jet’s within 75 miles) I’ve found this recipe to be a good homemade substitute. You have to use a real Detroit style pan and make sure the cheese goes to the edge so it caramelizes.
Also, the Jet’s Ranch recipe is the same recipe on the back of the hidden valley ranch packets. 1 packet of seasoning, 1 cup buttermilk & 1 cup mayo. Mix up and chill for 30 minutes.
I have been preaching the gospel of Detroit Pizza on this blog for almost 4 years now, and to my knowledge it is the only locale specific pizza to make its way onto an NLU video production to date.
I think we can now put the pizza rankings to rest, guis. Detroit has won.
The good people of Buddy’s were decidedly not dialed, nor cared to be. Placed order 45 minutes before pick up. Got there and they hadn’t even considered starting the pizzas yet. Was very not busy on a Tuesday at 8PM. Stood there another 20 minutes to get the za. Never seen people move that slow in my life.
That’s disappointing. Alot of restaurants around the D are struggling with manpower due to Covid. Buddy’s has a number of locations in MI. Assuming you went to location in the city. The ones in the burbs would probably have been faster.
Yeah we were downtown. Felt like there was more staff then people in the restaurant. Folks at the takeout window were just very not interested. Having personal phone calls on speaker phone etc.
That sucks
After all this talk my wife and I just ordered Buddy’s for lunch!!!
FTFY. It’s not bad at all, besides I much prefer playing in sunny 45* than humid 85*
Did you tell them who the pizzas were for?
BBQ Chicken with Turbo crust is FIRE
Listen, I need you to pick up the pace - this pie is for a generational driver of the golf ball
Absolutely. Told them we were going to blast em on social and in the google reviews.
Tell me you haven’t spent much time on the Refuge without telling me you haven’t spent much time on the Refuge.
DJ- “I’ve never heard of Detroit style pizza”
And now they’re being put ON blast
i only learned about detroit style recently (2 years ago maybe?)
it doesn’t get nearly enough respect nationally.
it’s fantastic.
i do think the quality you get isn’t replicated well by bad pizza places in other markets. like a bad detroit style and a bad chicago style deep dish are both worse than a bad thin crust or bad ny style. now they’re all still good, cause it’s pizza. but i feel like it’s bad for the detroit style brand
Isn’t Little Ceasar’s Pan essentially a crappy version of Detroit Style pizza? It’s the first square pizza I remember, but I just never heard anything referred to as “Detroit Style” until a few years ago, but that’s been nationally available for quite a while.
It’s ok to say @Randy 's name, he’s not Voldemort.
