Again, you wouldn’t have to in most cases. Most holes are not the Klondyke. There is usually maintained rough leading up to the Dunes that could and should be fairway.
Yeah that’s fair. Admittedly I’ve never been over there so I can’t say I have a preference one way or the other, and the one example that came to mind was the Klondyke but I see you mentioned that above.
So every Irish course needs wide and well manicured fairways? Should they give everyone in their club championship a trophy too?
I didn’t mention anything about the conditioning of the fairways…only a few of the greens at Carne.
and that rough is entirely playable. nice to have some middle group between fairway and borderline unplayable. I’ve played many of these courses so i don’t need the Klondyke comparison. played that one too.
disagree. which is fine.
Yes, you did when you were comparing them to “the big 3.”
I was talking about fairway to native transitions.
Here you go
Did you miss the part of the video about their limited budget? Are you going to pay for the grounds crew from Augusta National to move there?
It’s fine that you disagree, I’m enjoying this conversation.
It usually is but that’s not really the point. The second sentence is at odds with most of the great courses designed by the guys most of us love. Fairway transitioning either straight to native or a just a little strip of rough as a sort of bumper. A few more examples.
You could go on and on.
Compared to Tralee…
hear me out… I think Friar’s Head and Tralee might not be a very fair comparison.
I’m talking about maintained rough (non native), not the conditioning of the fairways.
I guess mowing the fairways closer to the native is just too hard of a task to consider. How is it even possible? You’re right, it takes Long Island money.
Wow, what a course. Great episode, and I’m sad that’s coming an end so quickly.
Ok, fair enough. I guess if I want to play a course from the big 3 I’m going to Sand Valley, Streamsong or Bandon. If I want an Irish links course I’ll go to Ireland. I think making them play very similar would be a bad thing.
Fair enough as well, I’m just saying that in my opinion, the courses can be even greater than they already are. I think width is something that is pretty integral to great design (with rare exception) but it’s all subjective.
Find me a course that can’t be any greater than it currently is
An example of what I’m talking about. Clearly room for expansion. Fairway bunkers should be sitting in the fairway.
It was a joke…
Every course can make minor improvements but places like California Golf Club and Rock Creek and Sand Hills are pretty damn close to their ceilings. I could think of more, that’s just what immediately came to mind.
I think fairway width is a pretty big deal, not just a minor flaw. The courses above could improve with little things here and there.
