The Majors 1991-1993 pod

Shamelessly starting a thread to share this one. These pods have become a favorite labor of love for me and Soly. Come for the John Daly bad romance quotes, stay for endless Jack and Tiger impressions and for the Lee Janzen slander.

I love these. Was lucky enough to have a longish drive this morning to have a window to listen to most of this one. Just all the little tidbits I’d never find out otherwise. Things I learned:

  • Daly getting served at Augusta
  • Tom Kite was a killer
  • Faldo Hit ‘Em Up
  • The extent of Gil Morgan’s Immolation
  • IBF’s peak and later struggles and how the 10 year exemption hurt him
  • Langer on his yips

Obviously the year bands work great with these, but would love to see:

  • Deep Dive into the 1986 Majors, which allow for Jack and the Saturday Slam
  • Jack’s 19 runner ups, just to speculate how many could have been wins
  • 2015 US Open, primarily just to allow KVV to dunk on Chambers Bay as Gary Player

Meh. They struggled to get info on majors in the 90s. Let alone 60s to 80s.

As an old person, this is right in my wheelhouse (albeit before I became a serious golf fan).

Expanding on the 72-hole PGA tournament record for putts (set by a golfer named Kenny), he also set the 18-hole (18) and 9-hole (8) records that week. It was on the small greens at Harbour Town (where David Frost broke and I think still holds the record). The 18-hole record has been tied a few times, most recently by Cam Smith in Memphis.

The ‘93 and ‘95 Ryder Cups would be my request for the next ancient history deep dive. Both were won by the visiting team. The ‘93 cup at the Belfry was the first one in Europe broadcast by NBC and made me fall in love with the event. Holeouts and holes in one and a cool driveable par-4.

Unless they go to a library and fire up the microfiche machine… the pre-Internet days are a tough research task.

I’m enjoying this look back, great job! I was reminded that at the Hazeltine 91 US Open my parents were under a nearby tree and saw it happen when those people were killed by lightning. Scary!

These pods are an absolute treat. Can’t wait for more.

Wasn’t expecting as much stunting on Jack in a pod about majors from 91-93, but thank you @Soly and @KVV for delivering on the goods.

BTW, I’m 41, and I knew all 3 of 1st round leader quizzes, Kenny Knox, Joey Sindelar, and Nolan Hinkie. But I was also watching golf before Tiger won his 1st Amateur, so I got that going for me. Surprised Jay Don Blake somehow failed to get mentioned on this pod, 91-93 was his prime!

I can’t get the image of Sir Nick Faldo singing Hit Em Up on the 18th green at Muirfield out of my head now.

I went to the NEC World Series of Golf at Firestone a handful of times as a kid in the early 90’s. The program from those events were a who’s who of that game.

As a very young man the Payne Stewart NFL schtick really hooked me - I truly hated Lee Janzen :joy:

I too do not care for Lee. Many years ago a course I was an assistant at, Brittany Lincicome drummed Lee Janzen in a money game. Very good stuff.

An unrelated tidbit from the pod that I enjoyed but at the same time made me nauseous was the stuff about Nick Faldo cheating on his wife with an Arizona State student… Just can’t imagine the lady’s being into those side burns lol

Also love any stories about JD wins and Norman losses, there’s a reason ESPNs did 30 for 30s on both of them

Trevino quote on the scratches on his back got me. Imagine Trevino in todays world.

Losing a golfer to Nick Faldo was a great one too.

Can you picture Sir Nick in his thick English brogue saying “you spicy little Sun Devil you?”

BTW, in a Chicago suburb close to me, there’s a Sir Nick’s Pizza joint, and my mind loves to think about all the jokes I would say if I entered…like do they cut their pizzas into Squairz?

Been holding out for my flight to Denver. Finally get to listen to this tomorrow!

Not sure where to post ideas for future pods, but I would love a deep dive on the differences between twosomes and threesomes in competition. Would love a mixture of NLU staff and friends on personal experiences with each, some tour pro thoughts on the merits of each, and what is the history of 2 vs 3. I think it’s an interesting topic that hasn’t been explored much yet.

Come for the well-researched deep-dive, stay for the Soly impersonations
