The Down Under thread - ANZAC adjacent

Thanks for the reminder @MG82 , I’ll be in Syd for a couple of weeks mid-July and mid-August, does Bonnie Doon still allow visitors on a Monday? I haven’t seen the course since the big redo and this maybe my best chance.

Can’t help you there my man, i’m over in WA and never played it either! @bigLeftMiss is/was a member but not even sure he still logs on here to see this. I can reach out to him on Instagram if you don’t get any other info by tomorrow :call_me_hand:

We should try and at least get a fourball of Sydney refugees - surely there’s enough in here now

I was going to put this in the LIV thread after seeing the Twitter screenshot but thought/hoped I might have more of a chance of a response in here rather than that dumpster fire.

With regards to him being “absent” at Porthcawl, do you have any news on Leish @Tron ? I know you were close with Matty, and hopefully that’s still the case. Seems like Leish has gone backwards since joining LIV (don’t check in on scores so could be way off there!), though i’m sure he’s cool with his $'s.

Cheers.

Especially for The Open. I have always loved watching him play The Open and had a good amount invested for him to win in 2015 at St Andrews where he made the playoff and should have won.

Prior to Valderrama he was 34th on points and 36th on money won with a best finish of 16th. I think he is down to 37th now. He has been poor. Not as poor as Jed “same manager as Cam Smith” Morgan, but poor nonetheless.

Leish has never been the hardest worker to begin with. Imagine he got the bag and has chilled a bit. Don’t think he’s totally mailing it in (he’s a competitor) but I doubt he’s working as hard as he once was.

Some of it also likely has to do with the quality of the courses - he’s usually played well on strong designs and/or firm/fast setups. Don’t think they’ve seen too much of that on LIV. He’s also nearly 40.

About as much as I figured. I know he likes his back yard and has his beer business in Virginia Beach where my wife’s family still reside. Just seems a shame that, whilst he’s not mailing it in as you say, he couldn’t even be arsed to give it a go for the UKBOPBHMTK.

Hopefully you guys, and Matty, are all still on good terms :pray:

@wilbur.kay cracking effort on the 7MB merch and great service!

Has to be up there as one of the best logos in Aussie golf right?

With absolutely zero bias, I believe it may be the best logo in golf.

It is at least in the pantheon with the likes of;
Whistling Straights
Fishers Island
Augusta
The ghost tree at Bandon (not the Bandon logo)
Sleepy Hollow
Olympic Club
Winged Foot

In Aus;
RMGC members logo
The National
NSW

Happy to hear other suggestions, but I do legitimately like the tiger head and would strongly support anyone going with Sandbuilt Studios for other design work.

This is in your top 3?

It’s a low standard in Australia admittedly but that NSW one is pretty average.

Yeah, but @wilbur.kay needs to say nice things about it so @ScottW will host him at NSWGC someday :wink:

Is that all you have to do to get an invite out to NSW? In that case, its probably the best logo in the world!

I really liked the Sandy Links logo minus the font (in a similar vein to 7MB I guess) but the actual merch options in their pro shop left a lot to be desired.

Trying to separate the logo from the course itself, I don’t love the more traditional styles with intertwined letters etc. I remember the Dooks and Brora logos from their respective seasons of Tourist Sauce really grabbing me - maybe I’m just a sucker for an animal logo!

Had to grab a putter cover when I played Dooks last year. The logo is so good!

I like logos that give some sort of hint to the location (subtly) or vegetation at the course. The National is the best example for vegetation here but also Moonah Links, Cranbourne. As opposed to NSW which looks like an ink spill stain.
For location/atmosphere, the lighthouse logos at Cape Wickham and Port Fairy are cool. As is the seah horse at Portsea and the boat? at Rosebud.
Biggest miss? Barnbougle - dull and unimaginative. Yes it shows a map of Tasmania, which is where it’s at I guess. But I’m sure they could do better.

Definitely agree re: Barnbougle. I would have remortgaged my house on merch down there had they had some more inspiring designs. For a place that nails every other part of the golf experience it was a really surprising miss

I’ve always thought the RM logo was a bit dull. I’m sure someone can give me a history, but why are there wings? Reminds me of a Pilots badge, not a top tier golf club. Agree on the NSW one as well, doesn’t look much unless you squint a bit.

Absolutely correct with Barnbougle, but for a) they may have gone too far to rebrand now, and b) they sell a ridiculous amount through the respective stores regardless. I would love them to run an international rebrand competition with the winner getting a golden ticket for life. There are so many things they could use for inspiration there with the potato/cattle farm history…
Sandbuilt did a mock up for Bougle Run which is very cool and would work very well for embroidery and all the rest;

I may have got a bit of nostalgia for the NSW logo which could do better. Apologies.
I also have nostalgia for the RMGC logo as I was a temp member there for a while and filled the bag with that logo while I could. I do still think it is a pretty strong wings logo, although I am not certain of the history. @MatthewM will know everything there is to know about it though.

The wind-blown tree logo for NSWGC is brand new. I like it but don’t love it. A but generic imo.

The state coat of arms is also an unofficial logo for the club and is really cool.

The 7MB logo by Nic Mills is :100: and while we are on great logos in Aussie golf, I think the logo Nic did for Australian Golf Passport is also elite.

Mea culpa needed on my part, I’d never looked closely at the podcast logo and just thought it was the standard coat of arms.

It is, indeed…
