F stop number is the focal length divided by the lens opening diameter.
f/8 for example means your lens opening is 8 times smaller than the focal length of your lens. So with a 50mm lens your lens opening is 6.25mm on that setting. At f/2 the opening would be 25mm.
The larger the f number, the smaller the opening, the wider your depth of field is, and less light comes in.
The benefit of the small opening is wider depth of focus - you can take a picture with things near and far both in focus. The larger openings (smaller f number like f/2) will have a shallow depth of field which can create artistic blur like this
I’m still learning my D500… and I primarily only use my camera for birding, but I probably got my best picture to date. (And I usually just post bird pics in the 3 thread, here). But I think there were some small rain droplets on my lens. Oh well.
