The CLC Matchplay - Season 5 is here! Launching at 1242!

Tried to update the sheet but couldn’t for some reason. @PowerFadez (+his son and heir) & I played at Mimosa yesterday.

We traded holes for a while, but I never held a lead. He would 3 putt from 15ft on 3, I would 3 putt from 15ft on 5. He hit a shitty lag then drained a 15ft for par on 8, I hit a shitty lag then drained a 12ft for par on 8. He shanked a wedge on 12, I shanked an iron on 13. Typical back and forth stuff.

Our mountain man won 2.5&2. Neither played great but I made one too many mistakes with the putter.

@grizzly224 and I got out to Cardinal yesterday for our round of 16 match. I have the memory of a goldfish when it comes to golf shots and even if I had posted this yesterday I doubt I could recall every shot, but I have the scorecard in front of me so I’ll do my best. Chris was getting 8 shots.

Hole 1, par 4 - Chris getting a pop. I came up just short of the green on the approach and it came back down and left, I managed somehow to get up and down while Pete Dye gave Chris the finger. I go 1 up.

Hole 2, par 3 - pushed with bogeys, neither of us hit great tee shots

Hole 3, par 4 - I carded a 3-putt bogey but some tee shot trouble for Chris means I still win the hole. Jeff 2 up.

Hole 4, par 5 - I was on in 3 and two putted, Chris did not get up and down for his par. Jeff 3 up.

Hole 5, par 4 - Chris popping. Long hole for a normal golfer. Both of us hit decent tee shots, I hit my approach to about 8-10 feet and I think Chris was just off and chipping. He nearly jarred it for a birdie net eagle, but settled for the net birdie. I lipped out, back to 2 up.

Hole 6, par 4 - Chris popping. I can’t recall exactly but I think Chris was greenside in 2 and just missed his par, I hit it close and made the birdie putt to go back to 3 up.

Hole 7, par 4 - I was on the green in reg and 2 putted, I think Chris was just long in 2 and did not convert the par. Jeff 4 up.

Hole 8, par 3 - Very front left pin, I blocked the tee shot and it went into the creek. Chris saw that and chose his adventure way left to the tee box on 2. A unique up and down try from about 20 feet directly above the green, he was off by maybe a yard and it ended in a greenside bunker with zero room to work. It was not an easy out and he ended with a 6 to my 5. Jeff 5 up.

Hole 9, par 4 - Chris popping. Bogey for me after a duffed tee shot, Chris out of the hole with a lost/OB ball off the tee. Jeff 6 up.

Hole 10, par 5 - Normally reachable in two but not today with a steady headwind. I got up and down for par, Chris bogey. Jeff 7 up.

Hole 11, par 4 - pushed with pars. Dormie.

Hole 12, par 3 - Allegedly the hardest par 3 Mr. Dye ever designed. Chris popping. I left my tee shot short right, Chris was a little further up and right but much more short sided than I, with a very tough up and down over a bunker. I pitched to 15 feet and 2 putted for bogey, Chris barely missed a 5-6 foot bogey putt to make 5 for 4 and ended the match. Jeff wins 7&6.

Chris definitely did not have his best stuff, and I managed to keep the ball in front of me for the most part to minimize any chances Chris had. For the record, our match was scheduled for Hyland next weekend and Chris opted in to a Cardinal tee time I had instead, no one was under duress to play Cardinal. Many people are saying it’s the best course in the country.

Yep. HootenMatch.

I got Covid and had to back out of our match two weekends in a row. I told @bshep that I was ok with him moving on.

Pending a hurricane I look forward to my first round of golf in a month!

As long as I can find my clubs.

Alternatively, we could each lash ourselves to the net mast of a trawler and head out off the coast. Whoever makes it back moves on, Lt. Dan style.

A last minute scheduling snafu prevented the match from happening, agreed with @naner he can advance

Appreciate @Swing_hard_and_hope for allowing @YardbirdGolf and I to get a minor extension with all of my travels in the month of July, we were finally able to get our match in on Saturday at Cabarrus CC after I spent 35 days out of the Carolinas since July 1!

In the lead up to my hiatus I was playing the best golf I had been in over a year and 5 of my last 7 rounds were counting on my cap. My Alaskan adventure paired with Hurricane Debby meant I hadn’t touched a club since July 8th.

I’d also been staying up far too late the past week adjusting back to east coast time and was incredibly concerned I was going to oversleep on Saturday.

Narrator: He overslept!

I woke up at 8:33 for an 8:42 tee time - my stomach sank. On a good morning I live 25 minutes from the course.

Checked my phone and of course both Sam and @PantherHawk are wondering where I am, I frantically type out a “fuck me”, apologize profusely, and promise to be there as soon as I could, hoping to meet them after just a couple of holes.

I got dressed, took out and fed my dog, and off I went.

I arrived at the course just after 9:00 and texted Andy to see where they were - luckily for me they’d let the 8:51 out in front of them and were only on 11 fairway (starting off the back). I hit two 8 irons, two drives, no putts, and hopped on a cart to meet them on 12 tee.

Seeing as I missed the first two hole completely of my own incompetence there was a question of whether or not I should start 2 down hanging over the match. I was planning to loop back to play 10 & 11 either way, and I told Sam it was his call. We agreed to let things play out and if the final two holes were needed we’d circle back.

I was giving Sam 2 pops on 13 and 2, as the winner of my pod I was coming in with the 0.5 hole tiebreaker.

On the whole, neither of us had our A games or were as sharp as we’d have liked to be.

I doubled 3 straight from 12-14, Sam didn’t need his pop on 13 making classy up & down par, and I made a triple on the par 3 15th after ping ponging across the green a few times. Even amidst the carnage, I was only 1DN (or 3DN, who could say?) thru 4.

I was able to settle down and find a bit of a groove on 16, ripping off four straight pars to flip things on their head - 3UP thru 8 (or 1UP).

#2 was Sam’s final pop, so of course I tug my approach shot left and dunk it in the water - his 4 for 3 is more than enough to beat my double - 2UP (AS).

Sam loses on OB on #3, has to re-tee but that one isn’t much better. I take the hole with a comfy bogey - 3UP (1UP).

Pair of bogeys on #4, no blood.

Sam found himself in a spot of bother after missing the green right on #5 - it’s a tough pitch shot coming back onto that green with everything running away from you - he goes long, my bogey covers his double - 4UP (2UP) with 6 (or 4) to play.

On the 6th hole we both find ourselves with 15 or so footers for par - Sam’s just misses and mine just falls over the front lip. With my 0.5 hole tie breaker that ends things 5.5 & 5 (or 3.5 & 3).

Truly a whirlwind morning, wish we both had a bit more of our games, but always enjoy playing with Sam and Andy!

On what has to have been the most humid day in the history of the state of North Carolina two juggernauts of the CLC met up during the Hootenanny for their round of 32 match.

Me vs. @Smidler

Playing the blue tees together I was giving up 14 shots. I hadn’t touched a club in a month and Smidler claimed he was busy working.

Holes 1 and 2 halved with some bogey net pars by the tall one.

3rd hole - 165yard par 3. I cold shanked it into a neighboring property owners chicken wire fence but stayed in bounds. I ended up with a double and lost to a par.

1 down.

5 & 6 the bogey net par game continued to halves

7 - Smidler hits it into the maintenence road and salvages a par that matches my birdie.

8 - par par - I am now 2 down.

In any good match - getting into your opponents head is the most important part.

On the 9th tee the discussion of the whispers of some baggery being handed out may have rattled my guy a bit. My birdie was enough to win the hole.

1 down.

10th hole - still rattled and screwed by some abnormally soft sand Smidler stayed in the beach for an extra shot and my par got me back to AS.

I lost the 11th to a par net biride.

1 down.

I won 12 to get to AS.

13 to go one up and 15 to go 2 up.

The only par 4 on the course that Smidler did not get a shot was on 16. Tough luck. I won the hole to win 3&2.

Of note: I also wiped the floor with the so called “First Flight” gross competitors and won the coin flip to obtain an NIT invite.

Not much of a match after hole 3-4. @Are_you_double_D golfed his ball at the Wilmington Muni until the match was over of course lol. @iPress and @AirMailWedges where there to witness. Some good golf was played on the day just not on my part with the exception of a handful of holes. The pace for the muni was amazing for a Sunday morning. I don’t remember much other than the match ending on hole 12 or 13. Rudd hit the shots he needed to, made some great putts on the day, and got the breaks when it mattered. I was giving him 4 shots to which he did not need as he beat me by one straight up. The golf may have sucked for me but we were certainly vibing down at the beach! Good luck Rudd and all the others that make it to Elite 8.

What a great weekend hanging out with Big Country @JNorwoodFive celebrating his wonderful wifey’s 29th “again” birthday! Hate to see your buds struggle in a match, it’s always more fun when you’re both on your A game. Josh’s BIL gave me all the gamesmanship ammo in the world to use, I’m not sure how much love they got for each other , but I didn’t have to dig into that bag of tricks. Those secrets might be up for sale on the black market for next year if anyone is interested in purchasing. We did consume enough alcohol before and after the round to lead to a) me leaving my cc at Elijah’s after dinner b) The Better Rudd having to make the 3hr drive home without any copilot as I slept 3/4 of the way. Word on the street is that Josh checked out the back of his eyelids for quite some time afterwards too.

@Grambom2 and I were joined on a beautiful Sunday afternoon by @RDUAccountant for our round of 16 matchup at Pine Hollow. I was giving Mark 1.

Hole 1, par 4 - I lead off with a solid tee shot that finds ends up in the right rough before Mark tops his. He has to punch up just past where my tee ball was but both of us would miss just short of the green from there. A good chip for him and a poor one for me led to the hole being tied with bogey.

Hole 2, par 5 - A snap hook into the trees/hazard had me put the mini driver in timeout for a while. Mark pushed his drive way right but stayed in play, I proceed to make a mess of the hole and he won it with bogey to go 1 up.

Hole 3, par 3 - Mark ends up in the grass bunker just right of the green with a tough downhill pitch, but I fail to take advantage and pull my iron way left. We both end up missing lengthy par putts but both make 4 footers for bogey to tie the hole, Mark stays 1 up.

Hole 4, par 4 - Mark’s tee shot slices into the right rough and I get just past the fairway bunker. We both hit the green, but he leaves his long birdie putt well short and makes bogey. I two putt from 15 feet to tie the match.

Hole 5, par 3 - We both end up long of the green, and with a back pin we are left with delicate downhill chips running out toward the water. Mark goes first and hits a solid pitch that rolls 8 feet past the hole, but I hit one of my best shots of the day and burn the edge, leaving a tap in par. Mark’s par putt missed so I go 1 up.

Hole 6, par 4 - both of us play to the lower left part of the fairway, my approach finds the right side of the green but Mark chunks his short of the bunker. His next shot finds the green, but I two putt for par to go 2 up.

Hole 7, par 4 - My tee shot finds the fairway and it looks like Mark’s will as well, but he clips the top of a tree and gets a really tough kick left into the hazard. He has to drop and would go on to make double, I get up and down for par to go 3 up.

Hole 8, par 4, Mark gets a stroke - a bad bounce puts my tee shot into the fairway bunker, Mark hits a “get way right” ball into the fairway bunker on 9. I come up short, but Mark has to pitch out of the bunker and punch through the trees to our greenside bunker. He would make 7 and my bogey puts me 4 up.

Hole 9, par 4 - two pushed tee shots put me in the fairway bunker and Mark in the right trees. He goes first and hits a good punch to the rough left of the green, I have a really awkward stance in the bunker and catch the lip. It leaves me 80 yards from the green and I would miss just short, Mark’s chip runs past the hole into the fringe. Neither of us can get up and down, and an ugly hole is tied with doubles. I make the turn 4 up.

Hole 10, par 4 - two hybrids towards the right side of the hole leave mid-irons into the green. Mark catches his heavy and bounces into the short bunker, I have to chunk and run mine out of a buried lie in the rough and it runs out long of the green. His downhill lie makes a good bunker shot run out 15 feet past the hole and he would make bogey, I make a 4 footer for par to go 5 up.

As we walk to 11 tee, I am 5 up with 8 to play having won 6 of the past 7 holes. Back on the 9th tee after his tee shot found the trees, Mark had declared the match over, and it was starting to look like before long it would be. Narrator’s voice: it was very much not over.

Hole 11, par 4 - I get a good break off the trees to stay in the left rough, Mark hits his best drive of the day well down the fairway. I catch mine a little heavy from a tough lie and come up short in the bunker, Mark hits what looks like a good approach but a little too much spin catches the ridge and rolls off to the right. Both our third shots would end up on a similar line, mine about 18 feet and Mark about 10, both with severe break. Mine rolls over the edge and leaves a tap in bogey, but Mark’s putt is in the whole way and he makes his par to cut my lead to 4 up.

Hole 12, par 4 - Mark’s hybrid ends in a good position on the left side of the fairway and I fan an iron to the trees right. I make a really bad decision and try and punch mine towards the green but get rejected by a tree and leave myself in a similar position with my third. I am successful in the second attempt and punch up to the greenside bunker, but it doesn’t matter as Mark makes a very comfy par to cut my lead down to 3 up.

Hole 13, par 3 - Mark’s tee shot is straight at the flag and Cormick and I think we may get some free drinks after the round, but it goes just a little too far and ends up on the top level with a very tough putt upcoming. My tee shot was on the front part of the green and again I burn the edge for a conceded par, Mark’s first putt rides the hill and leaves a 10 footer coming back for par. Again, its in the whole way for a great two putt par to tie and keep the lead at 3 up.

Hole 14, par 4 - Mark tops his tee shot again, but again I can’t take advantage and fan another iron into the trees right. He hits a fantastic second to thread through the trees and leave about 80 yards for his third. I think I have my ball and a relatively straightforward punch towards the green, but its not mine. I walk ten yards back and find it among the rocks in the hazard. I take a drop and try and hit the miracle shot through/over the trees but get rejected again, continuing to make a mess with my next punch rolling over the green. It wouldn’t matter though, as Mark stuck his wedge to five feet and made an outstanding par to cut the lead to 2 up.

Hole 15, par 3 - a long wait on the tee of the long par three with the lead shrinking. Mark thins a hybrid that rolls out over the green, but I hit my best shot of the day to 15 feet. His chip doesn’t take the hill as much as he wanted and is left with a 15 footer of his own for par, but I keep burning edges and leave the door open for him to tie the hole if he can make it. But he pushes it right to take a bogey, I have stopped the bleeding and am now dormie 3.

Hole 16, par 5 - I find the fairway, Mark catches a little bit of a tree branch but stays out of the fairway bunker. We both lay up and have about 125 yards in, he misses short right and I find the green but have a long birdie putt. Mark chips up to 6 feet and I roll mine over the edge of the hole a few feet past, but when he misses his par putt he concedes the match for a 4 & 2 win.

Mark rebounded from an ugly front nine with some incredible pars on the back to make the match much closer than it could have been. Things were moving quickly for a minute, and for once I was grateful for the slow play ahead of us on 15 tee giving me a chance to calm down after a frustrating stretch from 12-14. It wasn’t always pretty, but we are on to the Elite 8!
