The CLC Matchplay - Season 5 is here! Launching at 1242!

Myself and @Paden will be playing at Greenwood Country Club on July 20 at 10:00. Paden is giving me 6 pops. I look forward to losing 6 & 4 in true TC style.

@KyDaddy and I will be squaring off in the low country on 7/21. The venue is still up in the air. Anyone want to play host and witness the spectacle?

@RDUgolfer and I got out to Bryan Park champs today for our match. The forecast was iffy but we escaped mostly unscathed.

The front nine was mostly one sided, steady pars from me and a little struggle from Rett had me 3-4 up most of the first half.

Things started to get interesting on 14. I was dormie and Rett found his groove. The conditions also started to deteriorate on about 15 with steady rain falling. Rett golfed his ball to win 15, 16, and 17 to get back to 1 down.

18 is a long par 4, and with steady rain falling I managed to find the fairway, Rett barely into the rough but drew a tough lie. I was 230 out and dinked a 3 wood to about 10 yards short, Rett hacked a hybrid out to about 30 short. We both hit mediocre chip shots that didn’t release as expected, but both ended with 2-putts to close the match.

Shoutout to Rett who did not throw in the towel despite struggling early, and made me feel the pressure coming down the stretch. Also shoutout to our two referees/hecklers @BCates and @JScore, good golfers and better company, all in all a great day!

I had the pleasure today to join @Are_you_double_D and @mille2ne in their knockout match at Mill Creek. Nate went off from the black-blues, and Rudd from the blue-whites, which resulted in Nate giving Rudd 7 pops. Also Rudd has the extra 0.5 pt for being the pod winner.

Conditions were cloudy and sticky to start, but some sun came out for us in the latter part of the round. Not much roll to be had, and the rough was formidable. The competitors have Chris L (Grizz) and myself accompanying their round.

Hole 1 par 4 - Nate’s drive in the middle, Rudd gets right with his and finds himself in a tough corner blocked out by trees on the direct lines. Rudd hits a fantastic recovery skirting the treetops and getting to just short of the front right corner of the green. Nate’s approach puts him on the back of the green a decent bit from the flag. Rudd pulls off an excellent up and down for par, and wins the hole after Nate 3-putts. Rudd 1 up.

Hole 2 par 5 - (Rudd pops) Rudd’s drive hooks left and is presumed lost OB after a search. Dropping and hitting 4 in the fairway, next one goes missing left as well. At this point hole is conceded, but Nate plays out for a easy par after the birdie putt doesn’t drop. All square

Hole 3 par 4 - (Rudd pops) Nate ends up hitting into the right rough and ball ends up missing (told you the rough was formidable!) For pace of play concerns Nate drops in fairway as an OB hitting 4, but it’s all really academic anyway as Rudd plays a very easy hole and gets in for par net birdie. Rudd up 1

Hole 4 par 3 - Probably the most boring hole the foursome played today. Nate on the green well short of the flag, Rudd similar length away but on the fringe short. Both 2 putt for pars and no blood. Honestly a needed respite after the adventures of the first 3 holes.

Hole 5 par 4 - (Rudd pops) Rudd’s drive finds the fairway, and Nate is on the left edge. Nate ends up having to scramble a bit and gets out of position, while Rudd plays a straightforward hole and is eventually conceded a par net birdie to go up 2.

Hole 6 par 5 - Both find the fairway, Nate’s second is hit to about 50 yards, while Rudd has a bit of a chunk but is able to still get to the green in regulation. Nate tucks his chip into about 10 feet, and makes the birdie while Rudd misses his putt. Rudd 1 up.

Hole 7 par 4 - Nate puts his drive in position A, and Rudd sends his right onto a dirt patch and partially blocked out. Rudd hits a crazy recovery shot to within 8 ft, Nate’s second ends up around 10 ft. Both 2 putt, no blood.

Hole 8 par 3 - Nate’s drive ends up pin high but just off the green, while Rudd puts his drive to about 10 ft. Nate misses the birdie attempt but Rudd makes his to go back to 2 up.

Hole 9 par 4 (Rudd pops) - Both gentlemen end up in fairway bunkers, Rudd shorter on the left side and Nate a bit longer on the right. Rudd lays up with his bunker shot, but Nate hits a very nice looking shot to get back on the green. Rudd’s not able to get back into position even with the pop, and Nate is able to take the hole with a par. Rudd 1 up.

Hole 10 par 4 - Nate almost drives the green, while Rudd ends up getting into the pine trees by the cart path on the right. Rudd’s second shot goes deep into a penalty area, and after the drop is not able to make up enough ground to compete with Nate’s relatively comfy par. All square.

Hole 11 par 4 - Both hit good drives off the tee, Rudd knocks his approach to 12 feet but Nate sticks one in really close, about 3 feet or so. Rudd misses his birdie attempt and Nate buries his to go 1 up for his third won hole in a row and first lead of the day.

Hole 12 par 5 - (Rudd pops) Nate capitalizes on this momentum by smoking one right OB. Retees and gets one into the left tall grass. Rudd knocks his out into the left fairway. Nate gets pin high but right by the cart path with his 4th. Rudd has a tough swing and ends up in rough for his second, and then has to hack out his 3rd well short. Rudd’s 4th goes sailing across the green to the back fringe and all of a sudden this is a hole again. Nate hits his chip to about 6 feet or so, and Rudd knocks his to about 8 ft. Rudd makes the putt to card 6 net 5 and takes the hole. Nate of course makes the 6 which would have been a birdie for player 2. All square again.

Hole 13 par 3 - Rudd’s drive ends up left of the green in the rough, while Nate is able to put one to about 8 ft. Rudd gets a decent chip in, but Nate makes the birdie to make it all for naught. Nate 1 up.

Hole 14 par 4 - Both drives were well hit but ended up left of the fairway. Nate runs his second to the back fringe behind the hole, and Rudd ends up a little short on the front fringe. We actually pace this one off to figure out who was away, as nobody could tell (and it ended up being a half step difference). Rudd puts a putt to 3 ft, and Nate has a toe putter hit that leaves him about 10 ft short. Nate isn’t able to convert the par but Rudd makes no such mistake. All square.

Hole 15 par 4 - (Rudd pops) Both drives end up left and sitting down in the rough. Nate’s club doesn’t get good contact and he doesn’t advance the ball much. Rudd takes a big swing at his, and just carries the ravine (honestly a much better shot than it sounds given the lie). Nate gets his 3rd up by the green. Rudd’s 3rd gets to the left side of the green a bit up the hill. Both chip on, Nate still has work to do and isn’t able to convert the putt, leaving him with double, and Rudd’s 5 net 4 is good enough. Rudd 1 up.

Hole 16 par 5 - Rudd bombs one down the middle. Nate’s drive ends up on the left and he punches out up the right side of the fairway. Rudd throws his 2nd shot up on the green. Nate responds by hitting his 3rd to about 15 ft. Rudd 2 putts for birdie, and Nate responds by making his birdie putt to split the hole and extend the match (since Rudd gets the extra 0.5).

Hole 17 par 3 - Rudd tee shot ends up just shy of pin height and to the left, about 15 ft away. Nate hits a solid looking shot but it takes off on him a bit and he end up on back fringe. Nate gives a good roll at it but ends up sending it just left and 4 ft past. Rudd steps up and knocks in the putt for a birdie and to win 2 and 1.

Ok, so this match may get multiple write ups, but it may be deserving of such extraness. I didn’t plan on writing anything, but I decided to take pool time before taking care of some work stuff.

@mille2ne and I took our knockout round to Mill Creek. I’m starting +.5 and my match standings do not calculate that because we all know my scorekeeping leaves a bit to be desired and I like things more simpler. There’s debate as to whether or not the $80 tag for a weekend morning is worth the cost of admission. But being between the overpriced golf in the Triangle and the value you get in the Triad, it’s probably fairish. I planned on walking but they unfortunately discourage weekend morning walking because they don’t want to deal with the knuckledraggers complaining that the walkers are slow. I asked the guy at the desk if they can change the street name from St. Andrews to something more fitting since they discourage walking🤣

Choosing what tees to play is always a challenge for me here. The whites are only 5800 and some change. The blues are well within my range at 6300ish. Luckily for me, they do a white/blue hybrid that opens up more birdie holes while still playing over 6K. Playing the correct tees may have played a key factor in the outcome for me honestly. I chose the white/blue hybrid which makes my course HC 12. @mille2ne chose the blue/black hybrid, course HC 5. Judging from the results, we probably both made the right choice.

1- Nate from the blacks stripes it down the center. I from the blues hit a weak slice short and right, the most wrong place to be. My shot requires a 160ish punch/slice, cannot see the green from my ball. Nate puts his ball on the green while I was still searching. I pull off a 140ish punch/slice through the trees, and get up and down for par() to win while Nate has trouble with the green speed. Blood Rudd up 1.
2- Rudd (stroking) whites, Nate blues. A pull/draw into the trees gives Nate the go ahead to put it in the fairway with no pressure. He hits a great shot. I never found mine. I take the 2 drop penalty in the fairway. I pull it left again into trouble. At this point, I don’t even know what my opponent is doing, but I’m pretty sure he’s already won the hole. After not finding my second struck ball, I concede. Pretty sure Nate had a comfy par. Blood, back to even.
3- Nate blues, Rudd (stroking) whites, Nate blasts right into the trees, Rudd pulls it slightly left into the rough. Never found Nate’s ball, my comfy 2 putt par wins the hole. Rudd up 1. Blood.
4- Don’t know if I’ve ever been in a group that made 3 pars, but we did. Rudd up 1.
5- Rudd (stroking) blues, Nate blacks. Rudd finds the fairway, left side. Nate drives to the tree line on the left. Nate goes just short and left of the green, Rudd on in reg. Rudd par makes it up 2 going to 6. Blood.
6- Nate on the new black tees way back, Rudd on the blues. 2 excellent drives. Nate in position A after a really good 2nd shot to just short of the green, Rudd has work to do after topping his 3w. Decent 3rd shots give us both putts for bird. I miss, Nate’s bird gets it back to Rudd 1 up. Blood.
7- Nate blues, Rudd whites. Great tee shot from Nate position A. I again miss short and right. Again, I’ve got a 165ish punch/slice requirement. I pull it off (
), to12 feet, Nate hits approach to 10’. Comfy pars leave it Rudd up 1.
8- Nate blacks, Rudd whites(), reason 1 I chose hybrid tees. Both players hit the green, Rudd is closer and sneaks the putt in the side door at dead speed. Rudd up 2. Blood.
9- Rudd (stroking) whites, Nate blues. Rudd goes short right bunker, Nate goes far right bunker. I play it safe, laying up. Nate hits a great bunker shot pin high. I DB, Nate has a comfy par. Front closes Rudd up 1. Blood.
10- We’re all on the blues (not fair ). Great drive by Nate, just short and left of the green puts the pressure on me. I proceeded to block it right, on the cart path. Needed another 160yd punch slice, failure makes it 2/3 on that required shot. I lose the 2nd shot, but get up and down for bogey. All for naught as Nate makes the comfy par. Even Steven. Blood.
11- Nate blacks, Rudd blues. Both of us find the lower left fairway. I hit first, good shot to 10 feet. Nate says nice shot before sticking it to 4 feet. Nate birdies. Nate 1 up. Blood.
12- Nate blues, Rudd (stroking) whites. Nate loses 1 off the tee, hits a decent 2nd to the left rough rough. I stripe my drive, position A. Nate punches out, a very nice shot. I crap the bed on the next 3 shots. But my bogey getting a stroke tops Nate’s lost ball caused bogey. Even again. Blood.
13- Rudd blues, Nate blacks. Rudd pulls the tee shot left, Nate goes pin high 15 ft left but on the green. A decent chip puts pressure on Nate. Ice in his veins, bird is good. Nate up 1. Blood.
14- Nate blacks, Rudd blues. Both of us go left in the rough. Nate’s approach is long, barely right. Mines goes short and left. I get up and down for par, Nate goes bogey. Even again. Blood.
15- Rudd (stroking) blues, Nate blacks. We’d all rather skip this hole. But we both drive it long into the left rough. Nate’s 2nd gets just past my 1st. But I’m buried deep too, my 2nd barely gets past the creek n crap. Nate’s 3rd is short and left. My 3rd is better short and left. Bogey net par wins the hole for me. Rudd up 1. Blood.
16- Rudd blues, Nate blacks. I stripe the driver center cut. Nate pulls it left. Nate punches it to a good spot. I’ve got a decision. I’m 207. There’s water short, bunker right. I tell grizzly224 I have to go for the green. I pull it off, I’ve got 30’ for eagle. Pressure on Nate, so of course he sticks his 3rd hole high to 15’. The big bird putt comes up 18ā€ short for me. Bird conceded and of course Nate drills the 15 footer center cup with perfect pace for bird. bshep also drills a bird, grizzly224 makes par so our group plays the hole -3. Rudd up 1 (technically 1.5 up).
17- Rudd whites (
), Nate blacks. 2nd reason I chose white/blue hybrids. I go just short and left, maybe 18’ish. Nate hits a shot that looked better than where it ended I thought, he’s just left but long. grizzly224 tees up 2 steps back of the tee markers and hits it to 1 step short of the ace, tough scene . Nates putt from just off the green goes just left and long. I somehow find the side door again for bird to close it out 2(.5) and 1.
18- Match is done, but I’ve still got a chance to break 80, I’ve only done it a handful of times. Stripe my drive, miss approach just long and left, hit my worst putt of the day to Nate’s chagrin, weakly miss the par, but tap in bogey to 79 it.

I’ve had some epic matches through these years, especially vs BCates. But I have to say, this was the most epic based on the amount of blood and just the quality of golf it took to win holes. I think it came down to these 3 things to get me the W;
-Tee selection which puts PW in my hands on 8 and 17, birds on both

  • The 2 160ish super slices, couldn’t see the green but made pars
  • Nate’s missed opportunity on 12 unfortunately

Of note
-I was +9 and Nate was +7 if we were playing quota, guess we’re both sandbaggers
-It took me playing close to a PB to win
-If Nate and I were in a 4 ball, we were 69 gross which is absolutely sick for a 3.7 and 12.7

  • Nate as a 3.7 had a differential of 2.4 and as a 12.7 mines was 8.1. We both golfed our ball today

Special shout to grizzly224 and bshep. They both played in a manner that didn’t affect the match. True class acts when it came to pace, searching for balls in the extry thick rough, order of play, and making sure no one got unfair reads on putts. Just an epic day in the matchplay anals (sp?).

@BarnacleRob and I played a superb match at the Charleston Muni yesterday. We both carried and it took all 18 holes under the blazing SC sun to determine a winner.

Robby took holes 13-15 to even the match with three to play. After matching pars on 16 and 17 we both found ourselves with birdie looks on the last. I was fortunate to hole mine from 18 feet while Robby’s bid from just a few paces closer narrowly missed.

Big ups to Robby for making the trip down and for playing a great second nine on a track that is not kind to first-timers.

Knock out match between myself and @kevinmininni today at Legacy Golf Links. Let’s just say that Kevin is a stick and shot a 1 over 73 from, what was essentially the tips at Legacy. We played the blues at 6400+ but with wet fairways it was playing long. Kevin’s driver was a weapon all day and I think he hit around 16 GIRs.

I felt bad with my 15 pops. It was playing long and I probably should have played up a tee. I had a bunch of 7 and up iron shots in on par 4s. The par 5s really got me. Kevin could reach them in 2 and I couldn’t. I’m too stubborn to lay back to a good number and I left myself, the bane of my existence, the 60-80 yard approach on all of them.
I played the 3s and 4s pretty well and took advantage of the pops. Every hole I got a par I won. I halved 2 of the par 3s. Lost 1 and won the last with a bird.

Kevin is a joy to join on the course and the 2 buddies he brought with were great also. One also shot 73 and got master tickets in the lottery. We also heard a HIO from the group in front of us. Pace was horrible but the round was fun.

Onto the round of 32.

Edit…I just realized I didn’t talk about score at all.
To condense just assume Kevin pars about everything. He won 1, 6, 11, 13 and 16. I won 3, 4, 7, 8, 12, 15 and 17 to take the match 2 and 1.

Excellent match, and the muni was such a great venue! @KyDaddy will be a force to be reckoned with in the next round as he was clinical from tee to green.

Hole 1: paden makes birdie after having 6 iron into the par 5. Daniel makes par - Paden 1U

Hole 2: both player short left bunker on the 185yd par 3. Paden blades his over the green but hits the next chip to a foot. Daniel hits to five feet and misses the short putt. Paden 1u

Hole 3: we dont talk about Bruno - Paden 2 u

Hole 4: daniel pops here and makes 4 for 3. Paden misses a 15 footer to halve - paden 1u

Hole 5: daniel pops here, paden chips to 3 inches to halve the hole - paden 1u

Hole 6: both players GIR & 2 putt - paden 1u

Hole 7: both players in the fairway but only paden hits the green. Two putt comfy par for the proud horse owner - paden 2u

Hole 8: daniel hits hybrid inside paden’s wedge and narrowly misses a birdie putt - paden makes par - paden 2u

Hole 9 - paden uses the pythagorean theorum to cover a tree and make a comfy par - paden 2u

Hole 10- both players long right of green - daniel pops and takes the hole - paden 1u

Hole 11 - daniel loses the tee shot right and gets blocked out - paden lips out a birdie putt - dan makes bogey - paden 2u

Hole 12 - daniel pops, paden goes mega ob left - daniel makes par - paden 1u

Hole 13 - here’s where it gets interesting - daniel is middle fairway - paden hits it left against the OB stakes. Ball stays inbounds. Paden punches under a tree from 135 and rolls it up to 20 feet. Daniel 3 putts and chokes. Paden 2u

Hole 14 - paden hits the green and daniel’s in the bunker left. It takes two shots to get out and paden wins the hole. Paden 3u

Hole 15 - 510 yd par 5 with 100 yard pond carry. Paden gets over in 2, daniel rinses his third shot after a layup, match ends 4&3. Congrats to Paden for moving on.

@Jnglds and I were graciously hosted by Reis with the good hair Gouldrick and Will Fields at Umstead Pines for our round of 32 match. First, let me say you won’t find three better people to enjoy a good walk on a not-so-humid Saturday, so thanks to all for playing. I’d sum up the match by saying neither of us had our best stuff, and though the golf wasn’t clinical, the match was back and forth all day and entertaining as hell. If you are unfamiliar with either of our games, it was a real contrast of styles out there. I play an F15 ball spiraling to a wild slice while @Jnglds plays a baby draw growing to a bit of a hook. We are playing the back tees at 6500 yards, and Jon is getting three pops, and I am starting .5 up. It feels like more than half the holes at Umstead are doglegs; a theme will emerge that, unsurprisingly, the holes favoring a fade went to me, and those demanding a draw went to Jon. Overall, the course was in good shape, though a bit soggy, and the greens were true but very slow.
Hole 1 - Bogeys all around - AS

Hole 2 - My F15 ball clipped its wing and fell straight down about 40 yards off the tee. Jon put a nice drive just off the right side of the fairway. From there, it was a comedy of errors for both of us, but I put in a 20-footer for 6 to win the hole. Grambo 1Up.

Hole 3 - Jon came right back on the par 3 third, hitting a great approach and just missing the birdie putt for a tap in par - AS

Hole 4 - The real story on this hole was a disgruntled dad ahead of us who felt two of our group’s shots got too close to his cart. Avoiding a viral fight video, Reis was able to defuse that situation, and all parties moved on with their day. I then made a long putt for par to take the hole. Grambo 1Up

Hole 5 - Jon pops - Downhill hole banking left, Jon hits a great draw to the middle of the fairway; I, again, clip a branch with a tee ball and end up far back in the fairway. We both end up with 5s, but Jon’s pop gives him the hole. AS

Holes 6 and 7 are halfed. AS

Hole 8 - A short dogleg left - we both hit the fairway, but Jon’s approach is just a yard too long and runs down a hill behind the green into jail. I was able to make par and take the hole. Grambo 1up

Hole 9 - Par 5 dogleg left; Jon plays the hole properly, and I make an absolute mess. AS

Hole 10 - Uphill par 5, doglegging right. Both drives find the fairway, but mine has a slightly better angle to the green. Jon’s second comes up short; mine ends up left of the green. I hit one of my only good chip shots of the day to secure a tap-in par and take the hole. Grambo is one up.

Hole 11 - Short 4, slightly uphill. Both drives again find the fairway. Jon’s approach goes just left of the green, but the pin is on the left side, so he has a short chip in. My approach finds the green, but miles away, I three-putt; Jon cozies up a chip and makes an easy par. AS

Hole 12 - Long par 3 - Jon’s approach is short, but he hits a great pitch to 10 feet; my approach is way right, and I duff a chip. Jon takes the hole. Jon 1 up

Hole 13 - Jon Pops - #1 handicap long uphill par 4 and one of the hardest holes in the triangle in my opinion. Both hit good drives, but I, again, duff my approach, while Jon hits a solid approach just off the green. He chips up close. His 5 for 4 gives him another win and a ton of momentum. Jon 2 up.

Holes 14 and 15 - back-to-back doglegs right, and they really demand a fade, if not a full slice. I didn’t have much working, but man can I slice the ball. I was able to find the fairway on both, while Jon’s ball flight just didn’t fit either of these holes. I took both holes. And we are all the way back to AS.

Hole 16 - Dogleg left par 5. My tee shot ends up in trees on the right while Jon has his best drive of the day. I am only able to punch out while Jon lays up to about 80 yards in. My third catches the cart path and ends up pin high but in the pine straw. Jon comes up short of the green on his approach, and we both end up carding 6s to half the hole. AS

Hole 17 - Another dogleg left. Our tee shots end up within 4 feet of each, leaving us both about 135 in. I hit the back left part of the green, and the ball trickles to the fringe. Jon puts his approach sensibly in the middle of the green, leaving 30 ft. Jon lags a putt to a foot, and the par is conceded. I hit an awful lag up, leaving 8 feet to tie this hole. I was able to make the putt, though, and we head to 18 AS, but with my .5-point starting advantage, Jon has to win the last to advance.

Hole 18 - Umstead closes on a difficult par 3 over water with a false front. Let me say, closing on this hole with the match on the line was awesome. The hole always plays longer than the yardage. I have the honor, so I take more club than needed and play a knockdown shot. It wasn’t pretty, but this line drive caught the right side of the green, leaving a long putt. Jon knows he has to make something happen here and sets up to hit a swinging draw, but this one didn’t draw and comes up just short in the water. Now Jon has to make his third to put some pressure on, and god damn, was I worried when it was in the air because it was drawing dead at the pin, landing maybe 5 ft. beyond it. I take the hole and the win. Grambo 1up.

Again, I just want to say that this was a great match, and I had a great time out there. I’m lucky to be moving on.

@rkris and myself will be getting our match in at Mill Creek tomorrow afternoon.

Well I wish I could provide a detailed recap of my match with @rkris yesterday but turns out my memory still sucks lol. We had a wonderful afternoon at Mill Creek. Chris was giving me 5 shots on the day from the blue tees. We were joined by @grizzly224 (lead analyst & broadcaster) and his brother John.

While I don’t remember hole by hole or shot by shot, I do remember a very sloppy front 9 (45) for myself and a smooth 37 I believe for Ryan. At the turn Ryan was one up.

Thankfully, something clicked on the back 9 for me and we battled all the way to the end. Ryan was up most of the back 9 but 3 of the last 4 holes went my way, which ultimately led to to a .5 pt for match play victory for myself. I think Ryan ended up shooting a 75 and my 37 on the back landed me at 82 for the round.

@rkris is a tough but great competitor and is only going to get tougher as his LAB putter and irons get dialed in. I am very fortunate that MANY putts just did miss for him. I felt almost every putt had a chance to go in .

Regardless of the outcome of the competition, spending time on the course with some of the best people I know is sure hard to beat! I cannot wait to do it again

@rkris @grizzly224 - Feel free to properly document our round and ignore my pathetic attempt lol

@turtle812 and I played our round of 32 match Wednesday at Lonnie Poole. Jeff came in with serious momentum after being part of a victorious weekend at the roost regional and at his home course, setting the stage for a highly anticipated matchup with the defending champ. Real golf was played, no strokes were given, but I start with a 0.5 hole lead as the group winner.

Hole 1, par 5 - I lead us off and hit the fairway, Jeff pulls his to the left trees but gets a friendly bounce to set up a comfortable layup. I go for the green and end up just short of the front bunker, but play a solid pitch shot to gimme range to take the first hole with birdie.

Hole 2, par 3 - pin is just on top of the ridge on the left side of the green but both Jeff and I go slightly long and roll down the ridge to set up two long birdie putts. Both of us leave the first woefully short and miss our par putts on the low side, hole is tied with three putt bogeys. Cody 1 up.

Hole 3, par 5 - my struggle with the left miss off the tee in recent weeks rears its head again and I lose my tee shot into the left trees/hazard while jeff finds the fairway. Both of us are forced to layup, and my fourth finds the middle of the green while Jeff is fortunate not to roll down the hill to the left. He leaves his putt well short of the back pin and would three putt for bogey, I roll my first putt just outside of gimme range but make it to again tie the hole with bogey. Cody 1 up.

Hole 4, par 4 - two solid tee shots, but my wedge is a little chunky and ends up short right while Jeff leaves himself 15 feet for birdie. I hit another really solid pitch for a conceded par while Jeff burns the edge to tie the hole with pars. Cody 1 up.

Hole 5, par 4 - two more good tee shots, Jeff up first from the fairway and misses short and right. His chip comes up short and he can’t get up and down, I make a four footer for par to take the hole. Cody 2 up.

Hole 6, par 3 - both of us come up short, me in the short grass right and Jeff in the bunker left. Jeff hits a solid bunker shot and my chip rolls out past the back hole location on to the fringe, neither of us can make the par putts and the hole is tied with bogey. Cody 2 up.

Hole 7, par 5 - I find the fairway and Jeff’s drive rolls into the fairway bunker, but both of us are laying up anyway. His third is well left while mine is on the right fringe, but his pitch barely makes it onto the green and he would make bogey. My two putt par is good enough to win and take a 3 up lead.

Hole 8, par 3 - two good tee shots lead to two makeable birdie putts, but I run mine a few feet past the hole and Jeff starts walking after his before he has finished his stroke. Two tap in pars tie the hole. Cody 3 up.

Hole 9, par 4 - this tee shot continues to give me fits. Trying to play conservatively and stay short of the fairway bunker, I block my tee shot again into the tall grass on the right. I hack it out towards the green but end up in the left fairway bunker, and am still in the same bunker after catching the first attempt heavy. Jeff, meanwhile, makes a comfy par and cuts my lead to 2 up making the turn.

Hole 10, par 4 - solid drive for Jeff, mine is headed right but gets a friendly bounce out of the trees to end up in the fairway. I can’t take advantage though as I chunk my approach into the bunker. Jeff again makes a comfy par and I can’t get up and down, lead is now down to 1.

Hole 11, par 5 - another two good tee shots, but Jeff fans his layup right into what looks to be the tall grass. My own layup is chunky but fine, leaving a wedge in that I would hit to about 15 feet. Jeff’s ball ends up being just fine in the rough next the cart part though, and he would capitalize with a wedge to a foot for a gimme birdie. Now faced with a 15 foot birdie putt to avoid losing three holes in a row, I walk in the putt to tie the hold with birdies. Please note that typing this, I am now hitting CTRL+C. Cody stays 1 up.

Hole 12, par 4 - both of us hit solid tee shots, Jeff just left but still short of the fairway bunker. He pulls his left near the 13th tee box, while I again chunk my approach well short of the green. His pitch shot comes up just short, while mine ends up about 15 feet from the hole. He can’t make his putt and is in with bogey, but (CTRL+V) I walk in the putt to with the hole with par and go back to 2 up.

Hole 13, par 4 - I hit a good drive in the fairway, Jeff doesn’t get all of his and ends up in the fairway bunker. Yet another chunked approach leaves me in the bunker short, but Jeff can’t hit the green either as his fairway bunker shot is a little thin and runs over the green. Both of us hit our third on the green 12 feet from the hole, Jeff can’t make his and (CTRL+V) I walk in the putt for par to go back to 3 up.

Hole 14, par 3 - hole is in the middle but I miss into the valley on the right, Jeff does the same but to the left. He hits a solid putt for a gimme par, I am about to (CTRL+V) walk my putt in again but it catches the lip and runs a few feet by, I would make the par putt to keep the 3 up lead with four to play.

Hole 15, par 5 - I pull my drive into the pond left, Jeff also loses his tee shot but to the right trees/hazard. Both of us layup, but mine was again chunky to leave a long shot over the water to a back right pin. I unintentionally hit mine on a crazy aggressive line straight at the flag and end up barely covering the water, Jeff ends up just long and left. I chip first and end up 4 feet from the hole but coming across a ridge, his chip takes that same ridge and runs out 10 feet below the hole. Jeff knocks in the bogey putt, but I make mine as well to tie the hole and, thanks to my 0.5 hole advantage, close the match out 3.5 & 3.

@Fore20 (RIP) beat me 3.5&3 at Jamestown Park on July 28th. That is all I’d like to say about that.

Thank you for your understanding.

@KyDaddy and myself got our round of 16 match underway at Lexington CC with the help of @BarnacleRob. I was giving 1 shot on the day.

Hole 1. Nice handshake opening sloppy pars to push the 1st.

Hole 2. par 3 both of us find the green and I manage to 2 putt to go 1 up.

Hole 3. kydaddy missed left off the tee drew a tough lie while I hit the green and made par. Paden 2up

Hole 4. both hit the green and the putts go differently this time with an absolutely diabolical pin. Paden 1up.

Hole 5. 1 stroke hole on the day, kydaddy absolutely smokes one down the middle. I drew a juicy lie in the rough both of us miss the green and neither of us can get up and down. Match even.

Hole 6. kydaddy hits his drive thru the fairway and has to punch out sideways. I found the fairway and hit my 2nd to about 20ft par wins the hole. Paden 1 up.

Hole 7. Par 5. Both make par. Paden 1 up

Hole 8. kydaddy hits the green from the right rough, I’m just long of the green but manage to get up and down while a dreaded 3 putt occurs. Paden 2up.

Hole 9. less than stellar tee shots from both of us down the right side. I manage to hit the green while kydaddy is forced to punch out sideways again. I 2 putt for par. Paden 3up.

Hole 10. I 3 jack for bogey kydaddy makes birdie. Paden 2up.

Hole 11. long par 3, I manage to catch a piece of the green and 2 putt. Paden 3up.

Hole 12. we both make an absolute mess of this hole. Paden 3up

Hole 13. I find the fairway. Kydaddy hits it over the left bunker and into the shit forcing another punch out sideways. I hit the green and 2 putt. Paden 4up.

Hole 14. I hit my drive a little left but catch a break that it jumps forward instead of further left. kydaddy hits it just into the left rough. I do my best to hack it out of the rough but come up short into a bunker but still managed to get it up and down to win the match. 5&4.
