The CLC Matchplay - Season 5 is here! Launching at 1242!

Nanner and I just finished our match at mimosa hills. I’ll have a write up later tonight but I won 3&2

Alright more formal write up time. Tee time was 10:50 at mimosa hills, a course I absolutely love. After a rainy warmup we run the numbers and nanner is getting 7 off me. We decide on back tees. His pop holes are 1,2,7,8,12,14,15

Hole 1 par 4: two good drives. Becomes apparent that I have a big distance advantage and will need to take advantage. Two good drives. He hits his second to 20 feet from about 160, I hit mine to about 12 feet from 95. Back pin. He two putts, I knock mine in for the push.

Hole 2 par 4: two good tee shots, both about 75 out, he stuffs his second to 6 feet, I hit a good one to 10 feet. Two two putts, he goes one up with the pop.

Hole 3 par 5: he goes driver driver chip to about 8 feet but a slippery putt. I go driver pw to 5 feet also above the hole. He misses, I two putt, back to square.

Hole 4 par 4. Two good drives. Nanner approach to 15 feet from about 150. I hit mine to 6 feet from 60 out. He missed low, I bury mine. I go 1 up.

Hole 5 par 4: Two more good drives (a theme of the day). Both end up about 15-20 feet putting up the hill. Both short. Still 1 up

Hole 6 par 3: tiny green. Unsure what the wind was doing. Back right pin. I borderline chunk my tee shot to front of green. Nanner hits one that landed short left but bounced over the green into a really tough spot long left. Amazing chip from him as we are playing through a group to 5 feet. Buries it. I two putt from 35 feet. Still 1 up.

Hole 7 par 5: two very good drives. He hits his second just short right of green. I fan my second onto the right edge of the green. His chip comes up 8 feet short. I lag my 40 footer to tap in birdie. He misses, but we push with the pop. Still 1 up.

Hole 8, long par 4: 470 yards into the wind. I hammered my drive, he also hits fairway. He misses short left into bunker with second. I hit my second to 15 feet behind the hole. He is unable to get up and down, but I just miss the putt high. Another push with the pop.

Hole 9 par 3: front pin. Again unsure on wind. I hit the green but on the wrong side of the ridge. Nanner hits his only bad tee shot of the day into the cross bunker. Misses green short from there, two putts from fringe for 4. I lag mine down the ridge to tap in. I go 2 up.

I am 2 up at the turn. Raw scores are 32 and 38.

Hole 10 par 4: Two perfect tee shots to the corner. He hits a good one up the hill to 15 feet. I get greedy and miss right to the tucked back right pin. I go for the hero flop and chunk it. Get the second one up and down, but nanner two putts for par. Back to 1 up.

Hole 11 par 4: two more perfect tee shots (seriously we missed like 2 fairways between the two of us). Both misjudge the wind coming up the hill, nanner coming up short and myself missing in the right bunker. Two decent chips, nanner to 6 feet myself to just closer on a similar line. His putt lips out, I make mine, back to 2 up.

Hole 12 par 5: I miss my first fairway left. Nanner is dead center. Nanner then hits it to 12 feet from about 220 for a net albatross putt. I miss green short left but get up and down for birdie. Nanner buried the 12 footer for the net albatross. 1 up.

Hope 13 par 3. 209 into the wind. Two well struck tee shots but both come up short. Both of us chip to about 4 feet. Like hole 11, nanner misses and I make. 2 up.

Hole 14 par 5. Two more good tee shots. Nanner lays up in the right rough but not a bad spot about 50 out. I have to punch my second under an overhanging tree but get just short right of green. Nanner misses the green short from 50, I chip mine to 5 feet. Nanner unable to get up and down and I make my putt to go 3 up.

Hole 15 par 4. Nanners last pop. I miss tee shot way left into rough, nanner in fairway but far back. Hits his second to about 30 short of green but a good angle. I manage to get mine to just short of green on the fringe. I three putt for bogey, nanner also bogeys but win the hole with the pop. 2 up

Hole 16 par 4. 405 yard hole downhill downwind. Nanner again in the middle of fairway as I hit what might be one of my biggest drives ever. I have 59 yards to a far back pin. Nanner hits into the middle of the green and two putts. I hit a good wedge shot and bury the putt for the 3&2 win.

Hole 17 par 3: we both do some handicap management and make bogeys.

Hole 18 par 4: two pars. Very boring.

Overall a really fun match and we had a blast. Walked 18 in just under 3 hours and that was with waiting a bit on some groups on the back nine. Raw scores were 68 and 77, which nanner said was his best ever from the black tees.

I played @fore20 (RIP) at Cabarrus in Charlotte a week or so back. Big thanks to @tdaly for the host. Very few holes were halved. Fittingly the match ended on the template of 12 at Augusta. A true Cobb original.

@Paden and myself are playing our elite 8 match up at Old Barnwell tomorrow.

I shot 90 yesterday and apparently he just got new glasses and lost 4 balls in 3 holes.

Should be a proper pillow fight.

The trap has been set. I remember something like “I just changed to night shift so now is the time to get me.” That match never saw hole 13………….

I gave you the choice of courses. Stop crying.

I realized I never did a post here about the Elite 8 match between @Are_you_double_D and myself. Rudd hit me up to see about playing the match at Sedgefield on 9/8 which was technically still in the round of 16 window but he needed to get ahead of some scheduling conflicts, so with the blessing from the Capt we proceeded. @cjnussbaum1219 providing chat updates and Nate M (sorry Nate, don’t know your handle) also tagging along.

Rudd immediately found adversity on I-40 when a chunk of concrete caused a flat tire on the way to the course. Luckily it was just tire damage and a spare could be fitted, but still costly on time and stressful. Rudd limped it to a tire shop right outside the golf course and I went to pick him up. Kevin (I think that was his name?) at Mavis Tires was in no real hurry about anything in life, but after a struggle with the car’s computer to get it turned off with the spare wheel on, we were off to the first tee. There would be no warm up for either of us, but who needs that anyway. Kevin interjected yet again on the first tee via phone, Rudd’s credit card number sequence proved to be a challenge and Rudd teed off while on the phone with Kevin.

Finally freed of Kevin and tire issues, we were off. Rudd getting 7 shots and I will say I probably also had an advantage having not just dealt with a flat tire. I went 1 up after a comfy par on 1. Tied 2 with bogeys, and another par put me 2 up after 3. Rudd got one back on 4, back to 1 up.

We made the turn with me 2 up, and Rudd struggled on 10-12 giving me 3 more holes. Not much else could be done and the match was over after 13, 6&5. I played well overall, shot 79 for the day so Rudd not having it for a few holes was tough.

We still had a good time and the weather was perfect, so we had that going for us at least.

Any allegations of handicap manipulation after the match was over are false. In fact, my index has dropped 0.5 since the match. I’m ready to lose by a lot in the next match but I’m just along to enjoy whatever course it ends up being at. If 10/19 or 10/27 end up being match dates then I will unfortunately have to forfeit, so we’ll hope for the best on timing.

@LukeBoatright and myself got after it yesterday afternoon at his beautiful home track of Old Barnwell. COURSE IS SO FUCKING GOOD. Luke was giving me 3 shots on the day from the whites.

Hole 1. Par 5. Both of us hit the fairway with our drives miss the green with our 2nd’s while I managed to get up and down for birdie to his par. Paden 1up.

Hole 2. Drive able 4. I mishit a 2 iron into the fairway bunker Luke pulls his left of the green. Luke’s 2nd rolls off back left, I was unable to reach the green with my 2nd. We both were able to get up and down for par. Paden 1up

Hole 3. Par 4. pull hooked the 2 iron into another bunker but manage to get it on the green. Luke covers bunker with driver on an aggressive line. Both 2 putt for par. Paden 1up

Hole 4. Par 3. I hooked my tee shot hit the green and ran into a very very deep greenside bunker. Luke hits a safe shot to the front of the green. We both walk away with bogey. Paden 1up

Hole 5. Par 4. I chunk a 5 wood and find the fairway while Luke pounds driver. my 2nd came up just short of the green to a front pin. Luke finds the fairway bunker directly in front of him. I was able to up and down for par. Paden 2up

Hole 6. Par 4. 1st pop hole. The hooks are the theme of the day for me. Hook the driver right into some wispy grass. Luke pounds driver down the center again. I hit a good wedge just spun it off the front, Luke hits the center of the green. I make 5 for 4 and we push the hole. Paden 2up

Hole 7.Par 4. 2nd pop hole. Guess what I hook another driver but cover the bunkers cutting across the fairway. Luke pushes driver into the wispy stuff up the right side. we both make par. I win the hole with 4 for 3. 3up

Hole 8. Par 4. I hit 2 iron up the left side of the fairway. Luke goes for the aggressive play hitting driver but pushes driver up the right side into the wispy stuff. both of us hit the green make par. Paden 3up

Hole 9. Par 4. I hook another tee shot but find fairway. Luke mishits the tee ball but finds the fairway. both miss the green with our 2nds. I got up and down for par to Luke’s bogey. Paden 4up

Hole 10 Par 4. Grab 5 wood aiming down the left to play for the hook get stuck and chunk pop one well left of the hole. Luke doesn’t like his ball in the air as it is headed for the very punishing bunkering down the left of the fairway but his balls comes to rest between bunkers with a perfectly fine stance. His 2nd took a weird bounce on the green and ran over. I punch the ball back to our hole and hit it to about 30ft. We end up pushing with bogey. Paden 4up

Hole 11. Par 3. This is a fun hole. 205 slightly down and into the wind to a front right pin on an elevated shelf. I nuke my ball into the center of the green proceeding to run to the back of the green. Luke doesn’t love his shot coming up short but I would’ve traded with him. Luke’s chip doesn’t check coming into the green and rolls down the massive ridge but towards the front. Luke jokes and says don’t do that, well I didn’t hit my putt hard enough and end up next to Luke’s ball. from there I managed to 2 putt for a bogey to win the hole. Paden 5up

Hole 12 Par 5. Both hit big drives in the fairway. I am afraid of missing the green right so I just block it completely left of the service path above the green. Luke hits his 2nd over. We both make par. Paden 5up

Hole 13 Par 4. 3rd and final pop hole. This is where things started to turn, as I pushed off my left leg I cramped throwing my timing way off ended up with a fried egg in a bunker up the left side. Luke flares driver up the right. I manage to get my 2nd into the fairway then hit my 3rd to about 10ft. Luke hits the front of the green and 2 putts. I miss my par we push the hole. Paden 5up

Hole 14. Par 4. Luke is Dormie. Calf cramps again mid swing. Luke drives the green hitting it to about 15ft. Luke wins the hole. Paden 4up.

Hole 15. Par 5. Luke pounds driver over the left mounds. I cramp again mid swing but kept it in play. I chunk and push block my next 2 shots while Luke finds the green in 2. Paden 3up

Hole 16. Par 5. Luke hits his drive up the left side. I’ve had the last 2 of my new Drip drop hydration box. I rope hook my tee shot thinking I’m in trouble but it must’ve kicked straight when it landed because I had an 8 iron into the green. Luke hits his 2nd to the center of the green has an eagle look. I land mine just short of the green and it trickles past the pin to about 15ft. We both make Birdie and I close the match out 3&2.

Again just want to thank Luke for the hospitality and the great time out there yesterday.

@dmcelhennon and i kept the elite eight matchups going this morning at Riverwood. A home game for dermot but i am getting 11(!) strokes. Yeah, its a lot. Maybe he just shouldnt be a plus cap.

Hole 1, par 4 - we both hook tee shots left, mine is in the fairway bunker on the hole left of ours, dermot in the valley left of the green. I miss mine just right of the green, dermot acts like he doesnt like his pitch but it takes a members bounce off the cart path and runs out to three feet for a tap in birdie to start. Dermot 1 up

Hole 2, par 4, stroke hole - dermot pulls his drive left again and mine is just off the fairway right. We would both hit the green and even though i left my first putt woefully short, i make the second to win with 4-for-3 and tie the match.

Hole 3, par 4, stroke hole - dermot finds the fairway and i pull mine into the trees, leading to a punch out. Our next shots are both on the green, but i miss a short putt and dermots par is enough to put him back 1 up.

Hole 4, par 4, stroke hole - dermot goes in the left bunker and i chunk mine into the hazard. Faced with losing back to back stroke holes, my wedge from the drop zone spins back to gimme range and when dermot cant get up and down, i somehow win the hole with 4-for-3 and tie it up again.

Hole 5, par 4, stroke hole - two good drives find the right side of the narrow fairway. Dermots is hooked into the bunker and mine stays on the left of the green. My two putt par wins another hole 4-for-3 and i go 1 up

Hole 6, par 3 - we both end up on the top level of the green, but my putt stays well short and dermot wins with a 3. Back to all square.

Hole 7, par 5 - we would have been a caddy’s dream on this hole. Two good drives right next to each other, second shots just short left of the green within a yard of each other, two chips to the right of the hole, then two very similar putts. Hole is tied with birdies.

Hole 8, par 4, stroke hole - dermot smokes his drive but mine is a little right in the tree line. My second shot is a good one but just short of the green. I cant get up and down but net par is good enough to tie the hole.

Hole 9, par 4 - two more good drives, my approach is front left of the green and dermot stays on the back. His two putt par gives me a chance, but a harsh lip out on my own par putt keeps the match square through nine.

Hole 10, par 4 - im in the fairway and dermot in the fairway bunker, but we both hit the green. His first putt runs down the hill past the hold and he cant make the comebacker, giving me a gift of a win to go 1 up.

Hole 11, par 3 - my tee shot is left and looks like it may be out of bounds, dermot is right of the green. I get lucky once and find my ball in bounds but on the downslope of a ditch, but i get lucky again when my bladed wedge hits the hill and bounces up onto the green. Dermot leaves his pitch in the bunker and cant get up and down from there, i win the hole with bogey and go 2 up.

Hole 12, par 5, stroke hole - hole was over quickly. Dermots tee shot runs into a hazard and he tries to hack it out but barely makes contact and it stays in. He concedes the hole with me in the fairway and i go 3 up.

Hole 13, par 4 - my tee shot gets pulled left into the hazard, and i would make bogey to at least make dermot work for it. He would make a comfy par though to cut the lead back to 2.

Hole 14, par 3 - dermot goes first and finds the back of the green, mine is blocked right of the green. Again i am in a little ditch, but a chunk and run rolls out a few feet above the hole and i am able to tie the hole with pars.

Hole 15, par 4, stroke hole - two bad shots off the tee leave fairway woods into the green. We both come up short and chip on to about 20 feet, but two two putts put me dormie 3 with a 5-for-4.

Hole 16, par 4, stroke hole - neither of us take advantage of good tee shots, dermot going long and me right. A pair of good chips lead to conceded pars and i take the match 4&2.

The title defense rolls on back to the final four!

Congrats again to @Paden! My golf swing steadily deteriorated on the closing holes but he hit the shots when it mattered, and got the well deserved win.

Huge thank you to @LukeBoatright for hosting, Old Barnwell is easily the best golf course I have ever played and I hope I can come back one day. I still can’t quite believe that style of course exists where it does. Shoutout to my caddie Shelton for being a great looper, had really good knowledge not only about the layout/strategy but the short history and future plans for the place, and was fun to talk to about random stuff as well.

Thanks to everyone for a really fun golf weekend, thank you @Swing_hard_and_hope for running this thing, I can’t wait to get 2025 going to try to earn my way back again.

Shout out @Jeff_M for such a back and forth hard fought match. I definitely didn’t intend being 2 down early knowing I was going to have to give shots but my misses were small errors and nothing for me to get too fired up about. Kept my composure and eventually the putts started to fall.

Thank you to everyone who makes this event possibly as I enjoyed being in the mix this year. @LukeBoatright as always Old Barnwell is phenomenal and love being able to make it out there. @Swing_hard_and_hope great job with all the moving parts and obstacles. Shout out my wonderful wife who has asked me not to play in this again unless I won because I was travelling too much for her liking with a toddler at home but still held down the house while I was away for another weekend. Yes she is reading this over my shoulder there is not a gun to my head she is the real OG.

On to 2025!!!

Also had a great time with all the guys in the house this weekend.

It was an honor to be able to walk with the championship match and to play Old Barnwell again. Congrats to @Paden for the win but also shout out to @Jeff_M , @cjnussbaum1219 and @PowerFadez for making the final 4.

Thanks to @Swing_hard_and_hope for putting this together each and every year. It is amazing to be part of the CLC and play a yearly match play against 70-80 guys.

Thanks to @LukeBoatright for hosting us at Old Barnwell. If anyone ever has a chance to play it take advantage. It is 51st on the top 100 but I have to think it will only move up.

I had such a great time reporting the final match but even a better time playing OB. I had the driver working and hit some really.good shots for me. The wind picking up and the wet conditions made it tough for the day but I held my own when playing with much better players. I will.also remember the shot on 14, short par 4 where I lost my back foot in a huge slip and had to have a 1 hand finish on my back swing only to walk up the fairway to see my ball come to rest 20 feet from the hole.

Season 5, the best is yet to come!

The Brief

It is often said that matchplay offers competitors the purest form of golf. The way the game was intended to be played. It is also rumored that The Carolinas offers the purest golf courses this side of the pond. Well why not bring those two things together for a glorious competition shared amongst friends? Yes this is a copy from last year, why ruin a good thing, let’s run it back!

The Details

The CLC Matchplay will be a year long event, consisting of competition in and around the “Carolinas” area. These competitors, based on regional preference, will be placed into pods for our “group stage” competition, play matches, and advance on until we crown a champion.

Everyone who signs up will be guaranteed at least three matches as a part of your “pod” play.

Signup here: CLC Matchplay 2025

The deadline for signup at the link above is February 28th at 11:59PM Eastern.

There will be a $25 buy in for the matchplay. This is for two main reasons:

  1. This holds folks accountable for signing up and playing their matches.
  2. We will utilize the funds to help run back end logistics, trophy / prize funding, subsidize costs for the final 4, and donations to charity.

Venmo to @tlawler (and if you need other payment options let me know)

Frequently asked questions

  1. How does this work with the regional / national roosts competitions?
  • CLC Matchplay will remain separate from the roost competitions.
  1. Do I have to be a refuge / nest member?
  • Nope, you just have to like some competitive golf and make sure we know to get a hold of you for matches.
  1. I am going to make the Final Four, when and where will that be?
  • TBD for now, going to work on getting that nailed ASAP. It will be a weekend in October, because the sun remains undefeated. We will make it a great golf destination! Past locations included: Forest Creek, Mid Pines, Pine Needles, and Old Barnwell.
  1. When is the matchplay going to get started?
  • I promise we will over communicate over time, for now the plan is to get as many folks signed up who are interested (Deadline Feb) and then start working on the logistics / schedule from there. Likely launch date of 3/14 with 3 months to get your pod matches in.
  1. Why are you so bad at SC geography?
  • I don’t know man. I hope my adjustment on the form this year helps to get it settled, but I am sorry that its been confusing over the year. We are very open to our Southern friends and even proud to call @Paden (who might be in GA?) our champion!
  1. So who are past champions?
