It was only 85. I thought I was safe. It was a weird feeling though. The trees were swaying, or it could have been me, when we finished 9. Took about an hour in the clubhouse to get some more fluids and a protein bar in me so I could drive home.
Refuge is really going down hill if fucking gifs wonāt even work
Iād also like it noted that this is about where the good shots stopped.
Itās a work computer problem. They work on my phone but for some reason I canāt see any pictures or gifs when reading on the computer.
It was 88 with a real feel of hotter than the fucking sun in Aiken on Sunday. Really snuck up on us.
Same in Charleston Sunday. Starting at 4 pm was rough. Backpack + umbrella.
The first hot day of the year always really stinks up on you. I was out all day the day before with YHM sat a tournament. I was feeling it too.
Itās was quite convenient that I found a swing after two holes.
I didnāt realize it until I got home, but after starting double/double I played 3-9 at -1.
It certainly does, speaking for myself at least
Yea. And these putting woes you mentioned last week? I didnāt notice that when you were draining 15 footers for birdie on me haha
I hope everyone is enjoying the US Open this weekendā¦
Here is your reminder. Just 2 weeks left to get your matches in⦠please make sure the tracker is updated so we can flow nicely into the knockout stages.
Sandhills Pod action today out at Hyland Golf Club. A cruel twist of fate required @grizzly224 and I to square off. Thatās right: in a far cry from the epic contest we all witnessed last week out at Pinehurst, this battle brought together two 53 year-old best friends to fight over a point. I havenāt touched a club in a month so my only hope was to fake my way around the course I know best. Matchplay menace @grizzly224 was gracious to drive to me for the round at what is, by all accounts, my home course.
TL/DR: A nailbiting pillow fight to the end.
- @grizzly224 gets 5 pops.
Hole 1. A flip of the tee meant Grizz teed off first, where he smoked a good one over the left fairway bunker to around 70y. I managed to fight that wipey slice to hit a good one, leaving me a smooth 110y to a front pin. Yet, I leave it short of the green and donāt hit a great one from there. Grizz foozles his into the right bunker, though, and takes 4 more to get in from there. I donāt get up/down, but my 8-footer for 5 was good enough. HC 1UP.
Hole 2. I hit short of the left fairway bunker and Grizz flies it. Both of us tug our approaches left, where the same tree spat us both on the green. I manage 2 putts while Grizz needs 3. HC 2UP.
Hole 3. Back pin and a little hurt in our face. I tug mine left and long. Grizzās shot trundles to the lower level. He has a super 2-putt par to best my 4. HC 1UP.
*Hole 4. Two great drives and two poor approaches to a sick right center pin. Heās short/Iām long. We both make a mess of the rest of it. With a pop, his 6/5 pushes my 5. HC 1UP.
*Hole 5. Wipey is back, leaving me 160 out. My second finds the greenside bunker. But enough about me. Grizz played a long, lovey draw, leaving him 65y or so. He then threw a dart and rolled it in for a 3 for 2. Woof. AS.
Hole 6. I love that left front pin. We all do. Youāve got 15 yards behind the hole to play with to bring it back. Yet, we both flew it too long and had nasty hit and hope putts, both of which zoomed by to the front fringe. Neither of us convert the par and push with 4s. AS.
Hole 7. I canāt afford another wipey here so I play a 200y shot over the corner with hybrid. His drive is long and right. He hits 7I to the front left bunker, while the same hybrid left me with an eagle putt from the fringe. My tap-in birdie was good enough. HC 1UP.
Hole 8. I aimed at the left trees and hit it out of bounds right. My reload and the rest of it couldnāt keep up with steady play by the Grizz, who carded a par. AS.
*Hole 9. Iām in the right trees again off the tee but hit a good second to leave a good look from around 70y. Grizz with a great drive over the left fairway bunker, but his second finds the left greenside bunker. I scramble for a 5 to the back right pin, which pushes his 6/5. AS at the turn.
Hole 10. 165 to a white pin with a bit of hurt. I hit a good one to around 20ā and make par, which bested Grizzās efforts from right of the green. HC 1UP.
Hole 11. That draw that worked for Grizz on 5 had no place here, as his tee shot found the left trees. Iām sitting pretty in the fairway 135 out. Grizz scrambled for a fine 5, which was enough to push since I three-jacked my way to a 5. HC 1UP.
*Hole 12. Eff this hole. Two water balls between us and mediocre play for the rest of it meant both of us carded ugly 7s. With a pop, though, itās back to AS.
Hole 13. 165 to a back center pin into the hurt. Hit my best shot of the day to 8ā, but missed the birdie with another overread. Yet my par bested his 4. HC 1UP.
Hole 14. Fine play by Grizz found him on the green in 2. It was that new left pin today at the bottom level. He had a lovely 2 putt for a sweet par. Meanwhile, I fooled around in more trees. AS.
Hole 15. Grizz drove the ball well here again and made a fine approach for another GIR. Meanwhile, I drove mine right, hit a tree with my punch which rebounded to the 16th fairway. Had to wait for the slow dudes to tee off before trying to punch back through. Hard as I tired, the best I could do was 6, which was tough because I knew Grizz was popping on 17. Alas, Grizz takes his first lead of the day Grizz 1UP.
Hole 16. Grizz with a bomb down the middle. Mine finds hardpan just right of the cart path. I hit it a perfect distance to the left front pin, but tugged it 2 yards too much, finding the front left bunker. I need 3 more to make it in for bogey. Grizzās approach goes a bit longer than he hoped and he needed 3 more as well. We push with bogeys. Grizz 1UP.
*Hole 17. I fight off wipey and find the fairway, but tug my second into the left trees. He finds the right trees and has a lovely punch out, leaving 70y or so. My punch out finds the right fringe and I manage a 5 from there. Grizzās short game woes reared themselves, though, including a few shots from the right bunker. Even with his pop, I even the match. AS
Hole 18. It all comes down to this. Both of us knew all we had to do was to just keep it in play and, for heavenās sake: donāt go left. But, we both went left. Iām in the cavernous left fairway bunker but have a look. He is father back in the trees. His punch out found lumber, then sand. He made a valiant effort to scramble in from there, but in the end, my 5 was good enough. HC 1UP.
It was a fine day out there even though neither of us brought our best. Hats off to my competitor and my friend.
It was a great day. Harper was a scrambling machine. I had the better day off the tee but couldnāt make the rescues like Harper could when I got out of line. 2 bad tee shots in 17 and 18 did me in.
Thanks to @KyDaddy for the great day today at Dataw.
Iāve updated the sheet to 5-0-0, 15 for him and 1-2-0 still 3 for me.
Had a great day at spring valley with @Trumpet15 and @rtinman13! We had a threeway!
Spencer defeated Robbie 6 & 4, and defeated me 4&2.
I defeated Robbie 4&2 as well. Spencer moves to 4-0-1 and I moved to 2-2-0. Hopefully weāll have another match with Robbie at full strength.
As the old saying goes, never bring a limp into a threeway.
My matches were essentially over when I missed that step going down the stairs this past weekend. IcyHot Lidocaine could only do so much to keep me in the fight.
Still a great time with Daniel, our gracious host Spencer and his buddy Sean.
Action continued in Pod 12 today with @BarnacleRob taking on @Paden at Mount Vintage in a battle for the top spot in the pod. Things were looking decent for everyoneās favorite crustaceous golfer, with the front nine ending 1 down with three stroke holes remaining on the second side. Fast forward to 15, and I am dormied. āAngel handsā, as heās known to a segment of the PGS decides to stick an oyster knife in my heart with a near ace, and thatās all she wrote. Paden wins 5&3 and takes a firm (yet gentle) grip on the pod with one week remaining. Will he be unseated? Check in next week!
Pod 5 continued with myself and @CrucialTaunt squaring off at Mid Pines on Sunday. I am giving Mike 17 strokes, with the only non-stroke hole being 11.
Hole 1, par 4 - Mike pulls his drive into the waste area left and has to pitch out short of the green. He leaves his third short and canāt get up and down to make six. I take the first hole with a fairway-green-two putt par.
We tied 2, I won 3, Mike won 4. It was a truly disgusting display of golf that I would shield your eyes from. Proceed with caution.
Okay, you asked for it.
Hole 2, par 3 - I pull my tee shot left of the green. Mike tops his into the hazard before his third shot joins me left. Both of our chip shots hit the face of the hill and stay short of the green, but Mikeās two putts beat my three. The hole is tied with net double. It gets worse.
Hole 3, par 4 - I mega-block mine into the hazard right before Mike again tops a drive that stays out of the pond but ends up on the bank. He tries to advance it, but ends up in the water anyway. After a drop, he advances from there to the fairway, but the damage is done and he makes 8. I have to take a drop and advance up near the green, canāt get up and win the hole with 6 to go two up.
Hole 4, par 4 - I hit a good tee shot to the fairway and Mike hooks his into the trees. He has to punch out into the fairway bunker and can only advance his next one to the greenside bunker. My second shot is in the left greenside bunker where there is no sand to hit off of, and after blading my first attempt into the face and back to my feet, I bank the next one off the golf hotel OB and donāt finish the hole. I go back to 1 up.
Three holes. First tied with net double, second and third won with a double. Told you it was bad.
Hole 5, par 5 - Mike hits a good drive down the right that ends up just in the trees, I hit mine into the pinestraw left and rolls down under a tree short of the water. I have to punch out and still had to try and mega-hook around the trees to reach the green, but can only get to the greenside bunker. Mike makes a comfy par to square the match.
Hole 6, par 5 - similar to last hole, Mikes drive down the right just catches a branch and I pull mine left, this time into the hazard, making both of us lay up. Mikeās third goes long and mine stays on the back of the green, but Mike takes four to get in from there and in a Mongolian reversal, I make a long par putt from the back of the green and take a 1 up lead.
Hole 7, par 4 - I hit the fairway and Mike ends up in the fairway bunker. He would catch it a little thin and go long onto the next tee box, but he made a fantastic up and down for a 4-for-3 to beat my par and level the match again.
Hole 8, par 3 - Mike goes long and left in a really tough spot, I end up just past the hole with a downhill birdie putt. He hits a good shot from where he was and ends up with a 4-for-3, I leave a little more than I would like for par but make it to keep it level.
Hole 9, par 4 - Mikeās drive goes through the fairway and his punch out stays in the trees, but a good third shot ends up just off the green. I catch a wedge a little heavy, come up short, and canāt get up and down. Mike misses a short putt to bail me out though, and we make the turn tied.
Hole 10, par 5 - A hooked drive for Mike turns into a lost ball and he would go on to make a long putt for 7. My drive finds the wiregrass left but a punch out and approach later I am on the back left of the green. A bad misread leaves me about 10 feet for par, but I make it to go back to 1 up.
Hole 11, par 3, no strokes - We both hit the green and have about 20 feet for birdie, I tap mine in for par but Mike leaves his downhill putt just outside the circle of friendship. He would miss and I would go 2 up.
Hole 12, par 4 - we both fan drives out to the pine straw right. I pull mine into the left bunker, barely get it out, and donāt get up and down to make 6. Mike tops his second and leaves his third in the greenside bunker, but two putts after rolling it out of the bunker to win the hole with 6-for-5.
Hole 13, par 3 - Mikeās tee shot is pulled left and is lost in the waste area, mine gets caught up in the wind and goes to the waste area right. My pitch runs long and I make 4, Mike makes a six after the lost ball and I go back to 2 up.
Hole 14, par 4 - tees are moved way up for repair to the back tee box, but Mike pushes his drive right and ends up in his pocket before we reach the green. I make par to go 3 up.
Hole 15, par 5 - I cold top my drive and Mike responds with his best drive of the day, drawing one off the hill. I end up hitting the green and making par, but Mike hits a great bunker shot and ends up with a tap in par to cut my lead back to 2.
Hole 16, par 4 - for the second time on the back nine, Mikeās drive runs through the pine straw and is lost in the trees. He has to punch out and he makes six, I take the match 3&2 with a tap in par.
It was an anticlimactic ending to a tight match, but even in 100+ degree heat Mid Pines remains my favorite course in Pinehurst. The win gives me the lead in Pod 5 with a week left to play.
I am here for this content. Well done.
